After an uplifting performance against the league leaders on Tuesday evening, the words on everyone's lips are "back to back wins for the first time since March." If this can be achieved I think it will firmly establish us as a promotion hopeful or for the "half empty" members out there, puts us within touching distance of halfway to safety! Like ourselves, Morecambe are one of the smaller sides in this division and after a storming start under Jim Bentley last year fell back a bit and are starting to do OK again this season being three points outside the play offs! Their last two away games against bigger clubs Rochdale and Rotherham have been tight 2-1 affairs, winning the former and losing the latter so I don't expect the result to be a foregone conclusion, particularly with our inconsistency. They also pulled put a good 1-0 home win against Southend with top scorer, 21 year old Jack Redshaw being the difference! However, Kevin Ellison is the man to watch for me, scoring against us at Plainmoor by picking up a wayward Steven's pass in his own half and running clear across two thirds of the pitch. Richard Brodie, a former BSP opponent came on as a sub at Rotherham and got a red card so won't feature here... I think Ling has a difficult choice at right back but think it would be harsh to drop Leadbitter after two good matches and suspect Ling will keep his winning team together! The injuries in the team have been a factor in stopping us progressing as we would have wanted in the short term (although 8 out of 11 players have started in 13 of the 14 matches so far!) but over the season, they could be a blessing in disguise as Ling does have more options than maybe was perceived at the start of the season and has "kept his powder dry" if an extra signing or two is necessary towards the end of the season. Edit: Just seen that Ellison is suspended and Redshaw is a doubt with concussion - could be a good time to play them!

if an extra signing or two is necessary towards the end of the season. We will see Lord Lucan first, probably riding Shergar! Edit: Just seen that Ellison is suspended and Redshaw is a doubt with concussion - could be a good time to play them! That's the kiss of death then Rob!

A tough choice for the manager, and i suspect he will go for Joe, but the most important aspect of this is how the unlucky one reacts.
Who would be a manager? All of us.

Pre match optimism reigns, and for good reason. The sun is shining for the first time since Shergar was kidnapped and Lord Lucan disappeared - or at least thats what it feels like and there's an air of confidence about the squad and supporters. Underdogs last Tuesday and clear favourites today with Morcambe missing two or three of their main threats it should be a comfortable three points. Been here before so many times so I will expect the unexpected as usual and won't be to disappointed if it doesn't turn out that way, there's no reason why the opposition should be any weaker and just as Danny Leadbitter came in and did a super job for us they to will have players wanting to make a similar impression. Still very hopeful of our first sequence of back to back wins since March which in itself shows how inconsistent we have been of late.

It might be a bit chilly in the Bay today, but its a wonderful day with the sun out shining bright and the sky is very clear. Just a perfect day to play a game of football and for the team to go and get back to back wins at home.
Who knows how this game is going to go, will we see the team playing good neat football with a win into the bargain? or will the team give one of those poorer performances as they have in other games this season.
I do not have a clue myself, but I hope all those going enjoy the game and come home smiling. If you are going please consider giving your thoughts and views on the match here on the TFF.
Have a great day fellow members.

Back-to-back (at home). Up to 7th. Meanwhile, Exeter and Plymouth continue their slides. All rosy at the moment

A subdued performance compared to the highs of the Gillingham match but we did enough to win. The match was played in a good spirit and both teams tried to knock the ball around well. The goal came after a period of good possession but lost the ball just in their own half to Bodin who was able to put Danny through on the left and his shot across the face of goal went in off the post. Leadbitter was the man of the match and his pace was a good outlet going forwards at time although he still needs to work on his end product. Maybe both him and Craig stood out today for me. It would have been a lot more comfortable to have got the second and although we had some openings, we were wasteful with Bodin possibly the worse culprit. Still, three points is three points and now in a play off position and eight points ahead of where we were at our nadir last year! Back to back wins including four home wins this month is good news and hopefully we can keep the winning habit going. That's the kiss of death then Rob!

Back-to-back (at home). Up to 7th. Meanwhile, Exeter and Plymouth continue their slides. All rosy at the moment You obviously didn't watch this performance then James. If this match was a lame horse I would have shot it long before it died of its own accord. Completely bereft of skill, imagination, and worst of all entertainment, It really was that bad I wanted to go home half way through the second half .. Stick it out I did and witnessed one small glimmer of light in the shape of Niall Thompson. Why isn't he starting a few more? This was the sort of match, when you have been watching the Gulls for 40 + years, where you wonder why you didn't stay at home an catch up with some decorating or go Christmas shopping with the wife. No doubt there will be a few who will disagree ;D. Really cannot be bothered to write report sufice to say that at least three footballs were lost over the top of Bristow's Bench, the half time crossbar challenge was drawn three times and nobody could be arsed to go and have a go, even the 50/50 draw winner didnt bother to collect. It was that sort of afternoon set up perfectly for entertainment after Tuesday night and a beautiful sunny day and an encouraging bonding huddle from the players before KO but there you have it and if Morcambe had had their full complement of forwards available we would more than likely have been stuffed. Oh well 3 more points towards safety!

Fair enough, I was just trying to demonstrate that I could be positive for once...
From reading a few accounts it does seem to have been a rather tepid affair

A pretty dull game to watch today but as the cliche goes most of us would take a dull 1-0 win anytime for another 3 priceless points. It was bitterly cold at Plainmoor today and a swirling wind must have been difficult for the players to deal with. My immediate problem today was dealing with the freezing cold after having a heavy cold all week. What I discovered today is that it is even colder in the Bristow Bench. I had to sit back a few rows as opposed to our preferred front row. I thought there was a lack of atmosphere amongst the 2,457 fans, only 20 to 30 hardy souls from Morcambe all sat in the Bristow Bench. The Pop Side was pretty quiet without much chanting. Perhaps the crowd was waiting for the performance to get them going which was not forthcoming.
Morcambe started the brighter and should have taken an early lead. A free-kick was floated over, Poke came out and got nowhere near the ball and a header ended up on the roof of the net. A big let-off and Poke got away with that one thankfully. Torquay did their normal patient build up but there was not much space to exploit and it was mainly a midfield battle with few clear-cut chances.
Torquay's goal on 30 minutes came out of the blue. Bodin put through Stevens and for once Torquay got behing Morcambe's defence on the edge of the penalty area on the left. Stevens took it towards the keeper Roche and placed the ball neatly past the keeper off the far post into the net. Morcambe had a couple of decent chances to equalize in the first half. Poke made one excellent diving tip-over save. Bodin summed up his performance in the first half. He showed some great footwork in getting himself into a scoring position in the penalty only to trip over himself and lose the ball! Did he go to the same football academy as Chris McPhee? So 1-0 half-time.
So onto to the second half and we opted to sit in the Family Stand for a bit more warmth and to sit near my vocal friends for some entertainment and banter as there was not too much to get excited about on the pitch. Compared to the Bristow Bench, what a horrible view but at least it was livlier in the crowd compared to the subdued Bristow Bench fans. The game did open up more and Torquay got some decent chances to finish the match off. Bodin had the best of the lot being through on goal 1-on-1 with the keeper without a defender on him. He tried to chip the keeper even though the keeper had not committed himself. It was a tame effort that keeper Roche easily clawed away. A few minutes later Bodin had a great chance to make ammends with a clear sight on goal in the penalty towards our right. This time the ball was hit wildly off target. Thompson later came on for Bodin and a little later Easton on for goalscorer Stevens.
Howe had some good glimpses of the goal but his shooting, although a lot better than Bodin, could not find the target. Howe was replaced by Jarvis near the end. Morcambe gave it their all in the closing stages and there were some tense moments for Torquay as they had some dangerous free-kicks and corners. Much credit has to go to Downes and Saah for dealing with Morcambe's attacks impeccably all afternoon. I like the look of Leadbitter at right back as he offers great pace when going forward.
The funniest part was when Roche went up for a couple of Morcambe's corners in added time and both times he nearly scored. When he ran back into his penalty area he received good applause from Torquay fans in the Family Stand and pretended to be out of breath. It livened up in the main a dull encounter.
Still 3 points and a very healthy looking league position. Today reminded me of last season when we found the knack of winning 1-0 without looking too convincing. It's not a bad knack to find again. My own opinion is that with Lathrope back we are looking nice and solid with Downes and Saah a tower of strength at the back. We have got players who on form can hurt the opposition. It's good to see players like Mansell, Nicholson and Stevens start scoring this season in recent matches. I wonder if it's any coincidence they have started scoring since Lathrope has been back? We cannot leave all the scoring to Rene. I just hope Bodin can start to find his shooting boots as right now it is woeful. We know from last season on loan here he HAS got the ability. If he can it could make a big difference to out hopes this season as he is getting the chances.

A fantastic performance in the previous match, good conditions and facing a depleted opposition usually means that we are at our most vulnerable, doesn't it???!!!
Last season we took-on Morecambe when they were right at the top after they had a fantastic start to the season. We were brilliant for much of the match, then Ellison waltzed-around most of our midfield and defenders and equalised. I'd rather have the three points every time and take the positives from that.
I think it is no coincidence that the return of Lathrope has seen us really start to look more solid (aside from the Bristol Rovers match!). Three wins in four is probably the best form we have had since February / March and spreading the goals around is far more preferable to having a single outlet (as good as having Howe is!).
It's good to see the emergence of Danny Leadbetter into a player who looks like they can really make a challenge for the right-back spot. He shows good athleticism and with a run of games he will be a better player for it. I think it will be a challenge for Oastler to get his place back - and having that competition is really important and obviously very tough to get due to the limitations that we have with the depth of the squad and the resources that we have.
I think there is still a fair bit for Ling squeeze out of the squad and overall they will get better. Bodin will get better - he has the ability but perhaps needs to get a couple of scuffed efforts to hit the back of the net to relax him a bit more in-front of goal. I still think Thompson will be very good for us as well.

with 3 main strikers out it was a good time to play morecambe today, but they still looked capable of getting a result up to the death, thankfully we held out for 3 precious points and 2 wins on the bounce, which now makes us devons top side at present. All worth it despite getting blast frozen love spuds today.
