Thought we thoroughly deserved that win, some good football in parts and we defended like lions! Well done lads. I thought it was also a marked improvement from Bodin tonight and good to see Macklin back too.

The good thing about watching on the TV is you get to see when one of our players blatantly dives to win a penalty. But I'll take it Didn't see that as a dive James, Tully got wrong side of Bodin, there was definite contact. Yes Bodin may have made the most of it but in my book there was enough to cause him to go down. It was not like he threw himself down with nobody near him!!!

Man that was intense We didn't play well but a win's a win, especially over that lot. For all his supposed genius, Tisdale cocked up again Absolute rubbish. We did play well. In very difficult conditions we totally outplayed them in the first half. With our nose in front in the second half we kept our shape, dug in, and kept them out. Strangely that is what football is actually about. I'm off to bed now as I am not trying to take a team to the Champions League Final on Football Manager!!

No complaints from Tisdale about the penalty.....
Nothing wrong with the team spirit tonight and at last some very good and last ditch defending has earnt its just rewards!
Anyone know where Ling was tonight?
Interesting that Macklin was played instead of Thompson.

Martin Ling was taken ill over the weekend with headaches and spent some time in hospital, but all seems a little better now.

Sky said that Ling was in bed poorly. Am sure he has just had the best medicine possible.
Great display tonight against what I thought was a poor performance from Exeter. They didn't look as good as Southend.
Just wish we wouldn't give the ball away so much in the later stages of the game.
Some heroic performances tonight especially in horrid weather conditions.

Thanks, thought it would be something like that.
Now we have got that winless monkey off our backs I see that we are 9 points from the relegation zone, 6 from the play offs and 8 from the automatic places. Only 9 points between 3rd and 18th! Are we in mid table limbo or could we put a useful run together?

Three points on the board at last nice that it was against our nearest rivals but In all honesty I couldn't care less where the points come from we needed to stop the rot. Lingy poorly with headaches must be worried how hes going to handle Balotelli when he gets him here on loan!

Five Devon derbies played so far this season and only one team actually won one of them, yes Torquay United but you might be forgiven for thinking that after reading this thread. Mind you had we let in a late goal, or got stuffed, you can be sure this thread would have reached eight pages by now.
No we did not score from open play again, but we did this time hold out to the final whistle and earned three very important points. Three points against a bigger club than we are and higher up the league as well, yet over the two games we got four points and they got only one.
With the lack of any transfer activity its three points that might just prove to be worth far more than we might realise now, we do have some hard games coming up and our lack of goal scoring has to be a concern. I’m not sure this win is going to turn our players into world beaters, but it’s a win that does show we are more than capable of beating any team in this division.
Mr Tisdale said on the radio this morning he had no problems with the penalty award, he felt Tully was guilty as charge and I admire his honestly. Mind you the city fans thought other wise as I found out this afternoon while in Exeter. I did not have my wits about when I was asked where does our team train. There was I telling them about the 3g pitch here in Paignton, when back came the reply “are you sure they don’t train at a swimming pool?” So they clearly felt our player took a dive in the box, something our Jamesb also seemed to think.
There still seems to be so much doom and gloom in our fans, yes I know results and performances have not been good of late, but this was our first win since the beginning of December and against our local rivals and surely that should give us all some sort of lift? Trust me there many not be many more feel good feelings happening this season, so let’s enjoy those that do come along. It’s something we have been doing ever since we first started supporting Torquay United and its how it’s always going to be.
As Rob has pointed out we are 9 points from the relegation zone, 6 from the play offs and 8 from the automatic places. Only 9 points between 3rd and 18th. There are still plenty of games left to get the required points needed to ensure safety and while I do not think it will happen, we can not rule out making the play-offs.
It’s not going to be one of those seasons where we win any honours, but we know the reasons why and we have been told we have to get through this season and then the attention will be turned to the first team. I do worry that fans might be lost if the football being played at Plainmoor does not improve, I can only speak for the last two home games and they were not that good to watch and would have done nothing to get any floating fans back through the turnstiles.
But as long term fans I’m sure you have all been able to look at the bigger picture and know there is only so much money coming into the club and there will be times some of that needs to be spent on taking the club forward off the pitch.
Back to last night’s game, well done lads for fighting to the end and earning those three very valuable points. Hope Martin Ling gets better soon, who would want his job? Yes Paul Buckle might be walking around for now with a smile on his face, but he knows what it is like when the fans turn against you when you can’t seem to even buy a win. Not that our fans have turned in any way against Martin Ling, but it must be so frustrating for him trying the get results knowing where the weaknesses are and not able to do anything about them.

After now seeing the penalty award, I would have been very upset if one like that was given against us. Not saying our player dived, but there did not seem any attempt by Tully to bring him down. Still it does not really matter as it was given and as a result, we ended up winning the three points. On another day ones like that won’t be given and some others will against us.

I never assume we are safe until we have 53 points and this year I think we are going to need at least 50 although two of the present bottom six are most likely to sample the delights of the BSP next season. However, I never give up on hope of promotion and you have only got to look at what Crewe did to see what is possible. Or, to put it another way, after the 2011 Southend match we had gone on a long winless run and had dropped to 18th with 15 points from 14 games, our lowest position of the season and funny enough the same position we were in before the Exeter game. Then came that marvelous run and twenty games later, (the same number of games we have left before Exeter) we had just beaten Aldershot to go fifth with 62 points from 34 games i.e 47 points from 20 fixtures! Probably couldn't be done again but it's possible and 47 + 34 = 81 points, err, the same as last year and also in 2004! Tight league this year, that total probably would take us up automatically as well.

Given the weather during the day, I decided to shell out the extra £4 for a seat in the stand.
I sat as far towards the halfway and as high up as I could. Steve Perryman was just the other side of the great divide. John Turner was in the press box doing the stat recording. Had a chat with him at half time - a really nice bloke. Ian Morris sat in front of me. Barty's friend Phil (the Taunton one not the Chelston one who smells of piss) joined me for the second half.
Interesting that Tisdale started with the 4-5-1 / 4-6-0 formation that had denied us any possession in the second half of the Plainmoor game. It didn't have the same controlling effect - partly due to the ferocious work rate of Mansell and Lathrope.
You can see why Exeter do better away where they can play a patient probing style without their supporters getting on their case. Listen to some of their fans' comments about Tis and you would never believe where they are currently sat in the table.
Some similarities to the Plainmoor game with us having the better of the first half and them the second, but whereas at Plainmoor they turned the screw by going less direct, they went more direct after the substitutions. That gave the impression of more "pressure" but certainly Downes looked more comfortable having proper forwards to mark than he did in the first half. Lathrope had been superb in the first half, but he wasn't alone in starting to give the ball away more in the last quarter of the game as Exeter upped their work rate.
I thought both Saah and Howe were exceptional throughout.
Clearly a penalty - Tully caught his heel from behind. Not dissimilar to the Oastler / Gow incident at Plainmoor - and I didn't complain about that one.
On Manse's booking, I thought at the time that he had accidentally brushed past the keeper. On watching the TV pics, the keeper administered a forearm smash and Manse retaliated with a little "Beckham 98" style kick. Should have been a red for the keeper - possibly to Manse too for the retaliation.
A very welcome three points from an excellent TEAM performance in very tricky conditions.
I am now on seven points from three away games with no goals conceded (not to mention two Devon Bowl triumphs)- surely promotion form.
Next stop Cheltenham.
