Good thread Jon!
Rebuilding of the dressing rooms, international pre season tours, we were certainly riding high and good times for our club. Any grumbling about the impact on spending on the first team squad at the time? Picking up on the point about just having 16 senior players, how was that in relation to our club in recent years and to other clubs in the division at the time?

Picking up on the point about just having 16 senior players, how was that in relation to our club in recent years and to other clubs in the division at the time? TUFC always seemed to have at the very least 22 pros (two for each position) under Eric Webber. Frank O'Farrell's focus on quality over quantity was quite innovative at the time - although smaller squads probably became more common place amongst smaller clubs as finances tightened in the 70s. You can see we had 23 pros at the start of Frank's reign: Timbo's handbook

Has anyone seen any programmes for these games in Germany. The person I would have thought most likely to have one is you Sam!

Another update from the mysterious "Pivot". If Gordon Hines wanted to keep his identity secret, it was a poor decision to appear in the previous day's photo (far left)! HE 29/7/67

"Brown, of course, will be kicking the ball for the first time as a United player".
That's as maybe, but Brown had already made his Torquay United debut.
Anyone hazard a guess at where and when his debut occurred - and what was the opposing team?

John Docker, could play on either wing but handicapped by his small frame. Pivot may be reminded of Micky Somers but through the mists of time an image of Danny Stevens is certainty conjured up in my mind!

Docker goes down in the record books as the first ever loan player in the Football League! That's a bit strange as I always thought we had several - the most famous being Don Mills - much earlier. The link below may help to explain Docker's claim to fame. John Docker loan linkAnyway, Docker ended up only staying a couple of months. His place in the squad was taken by Tony Scott - a winger who was to give us great service before following the pied piper John Bond to Dean Court.

Thanks for that Jon, yet another obscure first for our club!
