Great memories of away trips in the sixties from Sam and Stefano and Gateman...priceless stuff.

Going back to the Darlington match, I'm pleased that others remember that U turn too! It was surreal.
The U turn was definitely on the return as it was night time and we were heading south on the first bit of the M5 (2 lanes then). We should have turned off at Worcester (or thereabouts) but blithely sailed on. The M5 just swerved right at the M50 junction in those days so we did have a fair bit of doubling back northwards before we got off and headed south again, perhaps that't where the confusion lies.

I think this whole thread is a gem. I have a mate who is Middlesborough mad but neither of us knew we had played each other in the league. To be fair it was when we were only 10! Nonetheless, thanks to this thread we now do and he and I have been having some great banter on Facebook as a result.
The respective diary entries are brilliant. A thread purely of selected entries would be fantastic, methinks.

I confess to being envious, despite the result, of those who went on the Middlesbrough trip. Not only would I have relished the whole day as an eleven-year-old but I never managed to visit Ayresome Park. I walked around the perimeter but never got inside.
I suspect the George Best boutique was the one on the main road through Sale shortly before passing Old Trafford on the way into the city.
Manchester United were home that day beating Aston Villa 3-1. Best scored as did Aston and Law.
You may have reached Leeds just as many of the locals were leaving for Villa Park and the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea. 62,000 at that one so Leeds would have had a fair following.
The sight of those parachutists and the barrage balloon sounds intriguing. I wonder how far short of Middlesbrough that may have been. A map of the time shows airfields in the Vale of York at Dishforth, Leeming and Topcliffe. Another one too at the site of the present Teesside Airport.

Barton, I am not sure where it was but don't think it was far from Middlesbrough so Dishforth could have been the place. It's funny what sticks in the mind of a 13 year old. I have diaries of 1966 67 68 69 and if there are any requests for home games during that period I am happy to put them out. I don't want to bore people. They are not redacted in any way and all the spellings/punctuation are as they appear in the diary. This is the entry for:
Saturday 31st December 1966 (816th day since missing a home game)
Woke up at half past eleven again. Can't understand why I'm getting up so late. I unset the mousetrap last night. I haven't the heart to kill that poor little mouse. I left him some bread last night and he ate it all up. Went up Plainmoor. Torquay played their best of the season to beat Doncaster four nil. Two fights in the crowd. Went to bed at ten.

It's great when someone digs up an old History Room thread. I really enjoyed watching that film again and hearing the tales of pre-motorway away trips. These diaries are a treasure. Is it too late to include them in the museum exhibition? I've negotiated the sale of publishing rights to "The Secret Diary of Sam Mole, Aged 13¾". The advance is enough for us to rescue the club, the royalties should provide a League 1 playing budget and when our infrastructure is ready for the Premier League, I'll sell the film rights.
