Hopefully patience and sticking with it will pay off in the end. Ten games was the figure I had in mind to make a proper judgement but already there appears to be a worrying pattern that has set in. Alarming also that from the kick off we were completely asleep and could easily have been behind after the first minute. In truth there look to be a few out there who are not comfortable with a system, Mansell included, that leaves us vulnerable to counter attack as we witnessed yesterday. Pearce and Downes have little or no protection and are bound to look uncomfortable if the opposition "swarm raid" and Harding and Mansell are out of position and the wide men are struggling to adapt there defensive skills. It's there where the problems lie for me, to much responsibility on the shoulders of two pretty average midfielders and I beleive we should revert back two Lathrope as a "sitter" in front of the back four and sacrifice a wide man with Hawley/Benyon switching working wide and across the front line when required. It should make us more solid and less stretched defensively and give the two mid fielders more freedom to "properly" commit forward. From what I have seen so far I would play Lathrope in front of the back four Mans, Harding, Chappel wide, who at least looked committed when he arrived on the pitch, Hawley/Benyon plus Ball with Cameron and Bodin starting on the bench. Yes we all wanted more attacking and adventurous forward play with wide men throwing in ??crosses?? but at what cost? Time for some honesty and lets not start to fool ourselves that its looked good so far. I think you are right both in that we haven't really fired up so far and that the jury is still out on what Knill is trying to achieve. Interesting that you are advocating the extra man in midfield now as I thought you were quite critical of that format last year and think a little bit more time should be given for this system to bed in with Ling waiting until October before changing things so successfully in his first season. I think Oxford took their chances yesterday and we didn't take ours but that's football and these things even out over a season as long as we are competitive which I think we still are. Tonge coming back will give us better balance in the side and though it pains me, would now prefer to see Cruise be given a run at left back. Midfield as you rightly say needs looking at but my thoughts are still undecided in this respect and I'll leave that to Knill for now.

It will be interesting to see how long the current formation carries on Rob as it can only work if the wide men are a genuine threat, beat men and get crosses i the box. I haven't seen much evidence of that so far. Ball looks as if he would thrive on that sort of service, he has the height and physique to get on the end of things. Good managers and coaches do there homework and suss us out so we surely must be able to adapt and try and not be so predictable. If it isn't working in a match we should be trying to upset the oppositions mindset instead of like for like subs and sticking with a formula that was clearly not working yesterday and against Wimbledon. Lathrope has looked pretty sharp in pre-season and I reckon has been a little unlucky not to get a place in the side. Cameron is a luxury, cant head a ball and hasn't hit enough crosses and isn't the greatest covering back. Having said that I personally love to see a winger go past his maker , get to the by line and put in a dangerous cross. Did he do that once yesterday? Bodin had his best game but again faded badly and became ineffective. So this system relies on wingers performing and producing. Strange I thought the pitch looked narrower with a lot of grass on the linesmans side. have they narrowed it? I also find it odd that many are once again picking on Nico as the scapegoat for all our problems but maybe your right and Cruise needs a run. Sure he didn't have the greatest of games but personally I'm really not so sure that Cruise is the answer either. Just my opinion mind and I expect many of us will have different ones which I look forward to reading..

Clearly not the result we would have wanted but the performance was pretty much even from both teams. A draw would certainly have been a fair result. On such things as a moments inattention are matches won and lost. Their first goal came from a corner that Smalley's marker let him get a pace ahead and he scored from close range. That Constable was left with enough space from a long ball to gain possession and plant a dipping shot over Ricey was again another moment of inattention, from the CBs this time. The 3rd was a similar story with another long ball out of defence while we were pressing at the other end. I think Ricey had one other save to make in the game and would suggest the Oxford keeper was the busier of the two?
I think our failing so far is the lack of penetration from the wide players and their inability to go past an opponent (Chappers excused the critisism yesterday though).
I suppose one of the key indicators of comparing 2 teams is how many of the Oxford players would we like in our team (all of them I hear you say?) I would suggest that either Smalley or Constable, and possibly Potter would. Im not sure any of the others would be an improvement though. Had both sides been equally clinical in their finishing, a five all draw could well have been on the cards, as it was, we weren't and therefore came away empty handed...

Pete _ Nico was not at fault for any of the goals but also didn't have much impact going forward and maybe Cruise operating off the left side will provide better service to the feet of our forwards who seem to prefer it there. You will recall us talking about how we didn't lose a game in his previous spell at left back which suggests he wasn't a disaster there. For me, Cruise and Bodin on the left with Tonge and Chappell on the right may have some mileage with Cameron and Thompson as back up to try to present some sort of threat out wide.

Looking at the highlights link above (thanks Sam), my suspicions from yesterday were justified - they were horrible goals to concede on our part. I was surprised Poke was not even on the bench yesterday as Knill confirmed he is match fit and just needs games under his belt. Personally I would play Poke again. I find it disappointing that the first goal from the corner was inside our 6 yard box and our marking was not great but Ricey was still on his line. Surely a goalkeeper has to command at least his 6 yard box. Poke is not the most commanding keeper either but I like to think he would have done better. I would go as far to say that in our 2 home games so far I have not seen Rice come out for a cross yet?
The second goal was criminal letting a long ball bounce right through us. Was it Mansell who missed the header? Pearce did not get too tight on Constable and Ricey was off his line enough to get lobbed. It was a decent finish saying that. The third goal we were pretty open again and Ricey's parry was right back into the danger area.
I noticed in the highlights Nicholson is typically involved in our best moves so I am not convinced he should be dropped. I would rather see Cruise play left back than right back. There is an obvious danger playing left footers at right back if they are not 2 footed enough. Was it good business releasing Oastler AND Leadbitter? I think I am right in saying that yesterday we played our left and right backs and left and right midfielders who were ALL left footed! Thankfully Tonge will be back next week but it does not say a lot for the balance of our squad and what options we have in certain areas.

Thanks for the Youtube link Sam. The commentary that goes with it is scandalously inaccurate, and I'm surprised Sky want to be associated with such basic factual inaccuracies. Oxford's first goal saw 'Deane Smalley opening his account for the new season'; it'll be a shock to Smalleyto learn that his two goals on the opening day at Portsmouth have apparently since been credited to someone else. Twenty seconds later and we're being told that Cameron finds 'substitute' Ben Harding !
Adding a few words to 2 minutes 39 seconds of footage you wouldn't think there'd be time to get much wrong, and it makes you wonder who provided the inaccurate information.

The majority of media platforms still seem to think the ref was a Mr Phil Gibbs. If only? Anyway, it was good to see Jon and Chelston for the first time this season Head down en-route to the Gulls Nest post final whistle looking decidedly grumpy Part of the Plainmoor experience i guess
