I would imagine that the new colours were greeted with some excitement as the team certainly would have seemed more glamorous wearing them. It would have been shortly after rationing and within memory of the war, a sense of renewal probably suited the change.
I think the feeling that people would be more resistant now is indeed likely, although for me, if Torquay decided to start wearing white with blue and yellow trim, then I’d be beyond happy as it links back to when I started watching them and in some ways still feels more Torquay to me than yellow and blue, even the time span is much shorter.
