Ah, I was hoping for a Kevin Hill connection somewhere. You cross them over and I'll just nod them in the net.

Sounds as if Jon's Derbyshire correspondent was an Old Reptonian. Or an old reptile. So you don't think he would have been a member of the North Derbyshire Bearded Vegetarian Socialist Workers' Collective then? It is funny that the writer seems to think that the League has not been broadminded or enlightened enough to take a huge step forward, whereas the Argonauts concept was really an attempt to turn the clock back fifty years. The Argonauts would have needed to draw some decent crowds to pay the first class travel, five star hotels, fancy restaurants, vintage champagne, claret and port for their players. But, of course, none of those players would do anything as vulgar as take home a pay-packet to feed their wives and children. Only ghastly common people would do something ungentlemanly like that. Would the Argonauts have wanted promotion to the second division if they had had the opportunity? I would imagine the players would have been far more at home in Bournemouth, Brighton or London than somewhere where the people wore flat caps and clogs.
