Leaving aside the taxi drivers and hotel workers I reckon there were a fair few "amateurs" in that Torquay United line-up anyway.
Centre-half Len Jackson. Wasn't he an amateur who totted up a decent number of reserve appearances over the years?
A spreadsheet of all 13,000 players who have played for our reserves would be a fascinating document. I'll put my head on the chopping block and suggest that no such document exists. A rare omission admittedly and possibly, for once, not a cross to be nodded in.

Much as it would upset me to see your head chopped off, if that is the ransom for someone to hand over a copy of that particular spreadsheet to me, I would have to hand over your name and address. Hang on a minute, I'm not sure if I've got your address. Never mind, I'm sure I can track it down via your IP address.

My IP address? Three miles north east of Skipton when I last looked.
And if anybody says I also post as Register I will sue.

Yes Len had hell of a lot of games for Torquay Reserves. I thought he was really old for an amateur! Mid-twenties when I was 17. Decent bloke mind and really good player. I remember him having two pints of Guiness after Thursday night training at the White Hart (which was near Plainmoor then no idea if it is now) because he wasn't selected for the Western League side and it looked like he may have to turn out for Newton Spurs on the Saturday! Purgatory. As Jon points out in a later post reserve appearances could never be quantified from programmes and not from the press either. I have pointed out a few I was missing on (and I was a bit part player from Newton Spurs) but (and I suppose it is ok to say it now 50 years later) the Torbay Herald once carried a story about Jon Hearne doing this and doing that in a Western League game and scoring a goal. Jon was the best footballer of my age group maybe not just in Devon but probably in the whole country at that time, but he was plagued by injury. At the time of that Herald report he was seriously injured. Somebody not registered playing under the name of somebody who is registered never has been restricted to the South Devon League ... and it would be interesting to see the registration system back in 1872 when Wanderers played Royal Engineers in the FA Cup Final. I bet at least one of them was cup tied after being knocked out in a previous round with a different team!

Great to see that cutting from herald football buff. The great don mills rang me on the Saturday morning and asked if I could turn out that afternoon at plainmoor. I didn't need to be asked twice. I recall that don asked me to keep running up and down the pitch, by half time I was completely knackered and was replaced by Steve middleweek. I didn't play too badly but the different pace of playing Exeter and district premier and western league was a big jump. Nevertheless I can say I represented the gulls in one game and I am proud of it.

Yes I was playing for the now defunct torquay villa. Had some tough opposition in those days including first teams of Tiverton town, dawlish and Elmore. Don't think I let them down, probably a free Saturday.

Oh dear, I better withdraw my "leaving aside the taxi drivers" reference and apologise to former Torquay United player Mr David Phillips.
I did not mean to take your name in vain, sir!

A rare omission admittedly and possibly, for once, not a cross to be nodded in. I reckon your estimate would not be far out Barton! As Jon pointed out he can see omissions in the programme pages, and this is because if somebody had played just one full game he was only shown in the programme if he was a full time professional. The many others weren't shown. Sub appearances didn't notch up an 'appearance' in the programme either. No good trying it from memory either. I have just seen Adrian Saunders on the BBC Sunday Politics show saying that Robin Stubbs scored a hat trick against Tottenham Hotspur in 1966. If the brains of the country can't get it right, what chance have we!

Don't think I let them down, probably a free Saturday. I hate to burden you with guilt 43 years on, but while you were enjoying yourself at Plainmoor your team mates were bowing out of the Devon Premier Cup in the battle of the Villas. 4-3 to Brixham at Cricketfield Road. We residents of the south side of the Penn Inn Roundabout would like to think that proves the superiority of the SDL, but BV were top of the SDL Prem and TV near the bottom of the E&DL prem. I think the story of Torquay Villa merits a separate History Room thread. The link below shows the strength of the E&DL during Villa's five seasons in it from 1966-71. Interesting to see some of the other South Devon teams in there. Chelston from 1952 until relegated in 1963. They'd be back in the top flight in the 70s. Two Newton teams after the War. I think someone is trying to wind Chelston up with that 1948-49 table! Newton Curries should, of course, read Newton Corries. www.nonleaguematters.net/Aarg3EC/EDL46.htm

Some wonderful past history again jon. My memory was playing tricks going back 43 years. Racking my brain cells of 43 years ago, I didn't let my colleagues of torquay villa down, while losing to brixham villa because I now recall I had already left t.villa. I believe I had gone in 69 and signed for brixham united in the p and d league. I do remember scoring the only goal of the game on my debut for them at bere Alston. I didn't play that many games for them when I bought a taxi business. So when I played the game for torquay reserves it was an even bigger jump from the torbay Wednesday league playing for the taxi team. Among the other Wednesday league teams were the police, hotels, seale Hayne college, fire service, Dartmouth naval college and st marychurch rovers. I believe the reason that don mills grabbed to play that Saturday was the taxi team had just played a charity game against torquay united ex pros at cricket field road and I had scored a good goal against former charlton keeper Eddie marsh and I had also known don from being in the youth squad some seven years earlier.
