After the trauma of last season, we now sadly spend our third season in the last decade outside of the football league, a bad habit to be getting into. On the up side, our last stay there was an enjoyable experience with 2 good play off campaigns, a Wembley final and a few good FA Cup runs for good measure. Not that we are exactly flush with funds presently with which to emulate this but unlike last time we have a lot of players with league experience and will be interesting to see how they do at this level. Probably have one of the toughest starts, away on the other side of the country, to the losing play off finalists of last season. Sometimes, this results in a bit of a hangover but Gary Mills has brought nine new players in, giving him plenty of options- linkI suppose the two stand out players are Shaw and Rankine, both of whom have lined up against Torquay in recent years and will be looking to replace their leading scorer from last term, James Marwood who has moved to St Mirren. I suspect our line up on Saturday will be very close to that of the Exeter game. Last I heard, Pearce was a doubt after injuring his ankle in the Yeovil match three weeks ago on the 15th July with the only good news being at least he hasn't lost the best part of a month in the season. Willl be interesting to see the substitutes as well. Two home games next week, so will be happy with a share of the points!

I love the opening day of the season. Before kick-off, everyone is so full of optimism. Of course, by 5 o'clock, more than half of them will experience some disappointment after defeat or a draw. For us, I would consider a draw a good start to the campaign. COYG!!!!!

Welcome back and look forward to your unique brand of optimism as the season progresses. Whilst I don't think we're quite promotion candidates, I do look forward to a more inspiring campaign this time around!

linkConfirmation that Pearce will miss the opener but only about a week away from fitness so should be back for at least one of the next two home games!

a few of us doing the 1000 mile odd trip for this one, hoping things are a lot better than last season Its a drive and park up at Bristol then train to Newcastle for a couple of us and should be home by midnight all being well. Good luck to Steve Breed and co setting off at 4 30 in a minibus. Lets hope at least 100 Gulls make it up there and everyone has a safe journey.

a few of us doing the 1000 mile odd trip for this one, hoping things are a lot better than last season Really admire your dedication loyal seven hours each way, 450 miles Wow! Surely we have a better and a more prepared squad than we did at this stage last year. Far more encouraged by this pre season than last. It may not happen for us at Gateshead they have a good squad, have spent vast amounts of cash and were very impressive when I watched them in the play-offs. Having said that I am convinced Greavsy has the squad on his side and knows what it takes to get results at this level. Have a great day loyal and all to all those that are brave enough and dedicated enough to travel all that way to Geordie land where "You can have a Fishy on a little dishy when the boat comes in" but beware of The fog the Tyne. Enjoy your trip and more importantly the match.

Heavy showers north of the Tyne tonight although the forecast is set fine for tomorrow. I got waylaid en route and ended up at Dunfermline v Raith on Tuesday and Celtic v Legia Warsaw on Wednesday. Now for the serious stuff!

Now for the serious stuff! Celtic reinstated! Great to see eufa are on the ball and allow common sense to prevail. Very similar to Scottish football. A bloody joke.

En route? Shades of Chesterton. Though not so poetic somehow. The poetry may be lacking but there was a certain kind of beauty in many of the places I visited during the week. Cliftonhill for example - home of Albion Rovers - on a lovely summer's afternoon with the grass freshly mown and the groundsman busily repainting the main stand in resplendent yellow and red. It almost made one overlook the decrepitude of the rest of the enclosure. As for Cowdenbeath; that's a sight to behold. Somewhat fortunate, therefore, that the proprietor of my B&B didn't enquire of where I'd been each day. They do tend to become rather sniffy if you've not been to the usual "sights". I was pleased not to have to lie or give the impression that I had toured the palace at Linlithgow as opposed to wandering through the open gates of Linlithgow Rose FC. An enthralling game at Dunfermline on Tuesday: catching a Fife derby was a real bonus. Celtic were appalling on Wednesday; people started to leave in droves after sixty minutes. It is, of course, an astounding mistake for Legia to make. What may sound arcane to us should be meat and drink to a club official. The irony is that, reading the Scottish press, there was initially relief that Celtic's exit had eliminated the possibility of further embarrassment.
