It is the first week since the season started that there is no first team game and perhaps an opportunity for those without match practice to impress Hargreaves! Prime candidate for this is Krystian Pearce who has had to kick his heels on the bench since his pre season injury 6 weeks ago!!! Hopefully a good 90 minutes will convince all he is up to speed and ready to return! Other squad members that may feature are Seabright, Thompson, Yeoman, Sullivan, Chaney and Hutchings indicating a strong youth presence. As far as I am aware, Ives is still in Northern Ireland with an Iceland match on Wednesday Price structure for this match is here Not sure if many will go to this....

Torquay United are lining up as follows:
Seabright; Thompson, Pearce, Hutchings, Deery; Chaney, Sullivan, Lynch; Prynn, Yeoman, Mauzouros.
Subs: Buckle, Mellanson, Duke, Hayes, Herrera
I better pay attention lest Jon asks if we went 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-1-4-1 or whatever. With luck there will be a PowerPoint presentation later showing how the tactics changed and (hopefully) progressed as the game developed.
I'll include the score too if I remember.

4-1 to Argyle. 3-1 at half-time flattered Plymouth; the final score did not. It was always going to be tough given the respective line-ups. Argyle started with Ollie Norburn, Lee Cox, Marvin Morgan and Dominic Blizzard. They were able to bring on Deane Smalley and Paul Wotton. They also had youngsters with first-team experience such as River Allen, Ben Purrington, Nathan Thomas and Tyler Harvey.
Torquay started brightly and played some pleasing football in a satisfying first half-hour. We lined up with Chaney and Lynch in midfield; Prynn and Mauzourous on the wings; Sullivan and Yeoman up front (either as a pair or one, usually Sullivan, more advanced than the other). We scored first with Sullivan, and then Prynn with good work, nicely setting up Yeoman. Playing well we could have easily added a second.
But hesitancy at the back with Morgan and Blizzard opening up the uncertain Hutchings and returning Pearce. Morgan equalised; Pearce - recovering from being awkwardly positioned - put through his own goal; a third followed soon after.
Substitutions at the break and as the game wore on: Hayes at left-back; Duke at right-back, Buckle in the centre of defence; Mellanson in midfield. Others too who weren't on the teamsheet.
By the closing stages Argyle were toying with Torquay and it's fortunate they only added a single goal in the second-half. We'd lost our shape and now it was mainly becoming an exercise for the youth coaches in gauging how their charges were shaping up. For the ordinary spectator, with first-team matters in mind, the match was losing its meaning. Thompson, playing at right-back, limped off. I remain dubious whether this exercise will lead to much; it must be difficult for him to prove himself - make or break after all - in a new position. And, as the game came to an end, it was Yeoman (who seems to have been playing in these games for years) who was our most experienced player followed by Sullivan and - would you believe? - Seabright. Credit to them all for the way they kept going. At least there was something positive for the likes of me to take from the opening thirty minutes.
Good, naturally enough, that the game was played. We'll need more development matches but, when it's Football League opposition, they're not going to be easy. Perhaps we need to bring Eastleigh, Forest Green and even Kidderminster into our loop as future opponents; it's certainly a shame that Hereford and Salisbury are no longer around to provide midweek opposition. It may also be helpful to have a run in the Devon St Luke's Bowl in order to add a few fixtures.

Nice report Barts! I suppose as a contest this has come at a bad time for us. Injuries to Benyon, Harding and Briscoe, Ives away on international duty and Bowman suspended has meant people not even in the match day squad a few weeks ago such as Chappell were not available to play! How did Pearce do? Withdrawn after 68 minutes, saving him for Saturday? Report now on dot com here

How did Pearce do? Withdrawn after 68 minutes, saving him for Saturday? I like Pearce. I would have him my team. But there wasn't a "wow!" factor about him today. Nor should that have been expected. He looked a little rusty; he was up against handy opponents; he was holding a very young defence together. He did okay in the circumstances. His substitution came as a "job lot" of changes when the game had died. The report on our site is taken from Argyle's. Not all the substitutions are recorded correctly; nor are they - for that matter - on my annotated teamsheet. Thompson, I think, went off with Pearce and Chaney. Deery at half-time; the teamsheet had Hayes wearing 18 but the report says he was number 31. There were certainly second-half substitutes wearing both numbers. We may never know for sure.

Yes, but ....... A trip to Plymouth with no mention of Ivor Dewdney? Could do better. Partly following medical advice; partly a test of willpower. I can, and will, visit Plymouth without having a pasty. My last Dewdney was at Burnthouse Lane, Exeter where a sign proudly proclaims the business is run by the grandchildren of Ivor Dewdney. As such "it has nothing to do with the shops at Sidwell Street and Marsh Barton".Sidwell Street has closed; not sure about Marsh Barton. And, if you know your pasties, where was this picture taken?

My last Dewdney was at Burnthouse Lane I told Chelston it was a dangerous place. Here lies Barton Downs - his last Dewdney was at Burnthouse Lane.

Yes, but ....... A trip to Plymouth with no mention of Ivor Dewdney? Could do better. Yeah, by reviewing the superior Ron Dewdney's pasties. . Oh, dear. I seem to have got yesterday desperately wrong. After the game I happily sat on a bench eating my bananas from the co-op in Stoke. Then I had a cuppa in the nice new cafe in Devonport Park. Instead I now realise I should have nipped down the hill to Ron's shop in Devonport. As for Ivor, mixed reviews on TripAdvisor. But there’s a new kid on the block.
