Old Frank, meanwhile, was destined to have a war-interrupted spell as manager of Chester. Yes - left us in the lurch on the eve of the 1938/39 season. Next manager was NOT Haydn Green.

I'm sure we've been here before but I'm always struck by how quickly life in the League became something of a struggle for Torquay United. The struggle pre-dated getting in to the Football League. We only survived the 1924/25 season by forcing the players to take a huge mid-season pay cut with the threat of closing the club immediately if they didn't agree. We're back to Albert Camus and Sisyphus here. The struggle is all-consuming but is heroic - nothing to be ashamed of. Those who have supported TUFC longer than five minutes know that really - even if a few enjoy having a good moan about it.

I suppose he just felt out of plaice and needed to leave; it can't have just been for the halibut.

Womack would go on to achieve great success in managing Grimsby and then Leicester.
