After our first win since August we now travel to mid-table Woking who will provide a sterner test but hopefully we can continue to improve and get something out of this one. Two away trips in 2 days is tough although this particular trip is one of the more manageable ones! This is our first return fixture after going down to that "subgate game" which left the crowd baying for the ref's blood and he was lucky that pitchforks and flaming torches were not at hand that day. Dan Butler is suspended for this one but with legend Kev back on board, the left back position is now covered. Our injury list is getting longer with Hurst hoping to shake off a dead leg but Exodus, Young, Fairhurst and Carmichael are all definitely out!

Given who was missing tonight and the fact we had a very young and inexperienced centre half pairing, a draw a great result away from home. Well done Nico and the boys.

Great result, considering. Just heard the last minute of injury time on my way home. Pity, could have got out of the relegation zone with a win but 4 points on the road is a nice return. Just got a rampant Grimsby to look forward to.

Four points from a possible six is a good return from a couple of tricky away games. The previous Tuesday ( v Dover) Dan Butler played as well as anyone, and his absence tonight did have me concerned. Incidentally, I'd much prefer to see Butler continue his good work in midfield rather than revert to defence. Luckily our 35 year old left back has been able to play four games in eleven days as well as manage the team (without an assistant) and still find some time to take Frank O'Farrell's birthday cake round to him.
Then losing Cap'n Angus as well to suspension , possibly at short notice, and it looked as if we were facing a real uphill battle tonight. A couple of teenagers forming an untried duo at the centre of defence in front of a young goalkeeper....fill your boots Woking !
So great credit to all the players for fighting hard to win another valuable point to add to the three they earned so well on Saturday. We lack experience, we lack a bit of quality, but we don't appear to be lacking spirit. I'm sure all supporters will be right behind the team on Saturday for what looks like an incredibly tough game against free scoring Grimsby.

I was very impressed with our second half showing. The first 15-20 minutes were on a par with the first 15-20 minutes at Kidderminster a few weeks ago.
Fisher improved with Marsh alongside and would like to see Marsh get a run of games. I don't think I can fault whichever defender it was marking for their second goal as it was a classy on a sixpence turn and finish with no space offered. Simply the type of classy finish we rarely see at this level from my viewpoint. As was Richards' pearler into the top corner.
Spiess has decision making lapses that concern me, but overall general competence. I couldn't fault any free kick wall forming or positioning as has been noted in previous matches and they did have at least two edge of the area/25 yards out free kicks I can recall. 5/10
Berry looked competent and fit for purpose, as I recall him previously. Think he felt his work was going to be cut out when Shepherd came on and was keen to pass on instruction once or twice. He doesn't offer much going forward, but I don't care as he does his primary role well enough. 6/10
Hickford and Smith looked fairly assured given their ages. Distribution isn't great, but again the primary function is good enough and I wouldn't expect Hickford to play it out or any of that on his first competitive outing. Smith is decent. Think it was Smith, not Hickford, who was turned, but only basing that on where the forward was and where they were all night. Good goal. 5/10 and 6/10
Nico. Good positional sense. Decent distribution. Slow. Nothing we don't know. I think playing these first few games with this raw side has been no bad experiment when their confidence must have been shot. And that's not where I was on that issue, but I am now. Nice quick witted retort to a couple pleading 'stop panicking' early doors. 'You stop panicking, then'. Drew a laugh and I'd be impressed with my gaffer as a lad with that. 5.5/10 (but leadership points bonus and half time team talk may well have helped matters)
Fenwick. This lad has talent and can pick a pass. As raw as it gets, (all bar Shep) but our potential safe cracker if Briscoe doesn't fire soon. Novice to the position he was in. Would be happy with Heslop and Richards behind him in a diamond. 6/10
Heslop. Kept it simple. Don't like his hair. Reasonable game. Good second half in particular. 5.5/10 Richards. Started the first half poorly, but got better as the half wore on. Gets stuck in even when it's not coming off for him. Great finish, grew in stature. Keeps going and going. Yep, stray passing in there, but as combative a midfielder as we can expect with our budget and is a worthy starter every week for me. 6/10
Hurst. The lad is quality. Our only outlet other than ineffective punts upfield from youngsters in the first half. Worries the opposition, and creates space for others with his ability to run with the ball at pace. Not afraid to have a go. Ticking lots of boxes for me every time I see him. 7/10
Briscoe. Didn't notice anything he did in the first half. We weren't playing the ball around particularly well and he is not the man to chase aimless punts. We know he has skill. Fenwick is his natural replacement for me. But Marsh and Fisher was the right way to go second half, even if it was enforced through injury. If he's injured, then maybe that explains a poor display, but again, our hurried and poor play in the first half is not what he is about, even when on song. 3.5/10
Fisher. Lost at sea first half. Again, it was down to distribution being either of the aimless punt variety or inaccurate pass variety. Didn't move around giving too much in the way of options for his midfield men to aim for and was powder puff on a decent cross from Nico on one occasion in the first half, seemingly heading the ball up and away, rather than attacking anything that came his way. His game transformed when Marsh joined him in attack, as opposed to Briscoe behind him. He put himself about, was keen to link up play and had those options now available. Good looping header which drew an excellent save from their keeper. 5.5/10 (6.5/10 for the second half, mind)
Marsh. A big part of our second half transformation. This lad needs a run in the side. That answer was in the building. Excites me in the same way Hurst does (and, in a different way, Briscoe has, previously) Not the best of first touches, but pace and intelligence shown. Drew the foul for the penalty. Put one on a plate for Bell to sky at the end and a constant threat and concern for Woking's defence that had had it too easy in the first half. 8/10
Murombedzi. Keen. Pace option. Not on long enough to assess overall contribution, but a worry for defences. The odd blind alley while finding his feet. The rawest of raw and will benefit, as will a few of these young lads, from nurturing management over a nasty bastard, imo.
Bell. Should've got the winner. It was probably his first touch, mind. But an awful one. Didn't see enough of him.
Manager: Sorted it out at half time. Fair play to him. Legendary. He should steer clear of Mansell as he would undermine him whilst being one of the lads, try and nick credit and stab him in the back ;-) But I reckon Nico (correct spelling) knows that. He's not daft.

Well done Nico, if only the last 3 or 4 managers knew that all they needed to do to win was just put a smile on the faces of the players! I must admit that I was one of the many sceptics on his appointment, and I know it's only early days yet, but it does seem to be working out...so I was wrong! I've put a Burka on so no one can recognise me! I would like to see him sign a striker (how many bloody times have I and others said those words over the last 3 to 4 seasons) in the next week or so ~ fundamentally, just to see the strength of his signings initially ~ oh, and because we could do with one! Sadly, all the good work is being done away from home so I doubt it will add anything to the gate this Saturday, which would be well below the 1800 mark were it not for 200/300 Grimsby supporters! I should say rampant Grimsby supporters after their demolition of Halifax.
On a lighter note: For those of you that have dogs (I have four) I have found that Tesco do nappy bags at 37p for 300! It would cost you 37p for about 10 if you bought doggy poo bags! So when you are standing over a big pile of steaming poo with your Tesco nappy bag on your hand think of me...what do you mean you already do!

Thanks for the report Rob, a decent match report seems to be missing of late.
Thought we'd be coming home with the three points, but a draw and other results going our way meant a good end to the night.
Thought that Briscoe had a cracking game against Dover the other week and I am surprised at the amount of tick he gets.I don't think he's a porker, perhaps he's playing as instructed by the manager! Still folk have their favourites who can do no wrong eh?

Are we talking about the same Briscoe that managed one shot and one cross in the seventy odd minutes he was on the pitch? The one with the poor first touch that usually gifted the ball to the opposition or ran out for a throw in? He had an absolute shocker of a game to be honest.

Also the thoughts of a chum I stand with.

True and its also the beauty of having a wonderful view (well worth the extra £4 for an adult in my opinion) to observe the progress of a match from the back of the bench. You can see just who appears to have some previously unknown form of rhomboid at the end of their legs that causes the ball to career off in unexpected directions pretty much whenever they attempt to control it. Also the thoughts of the viewers sat either side of me (not chums though as I have no idea who they are).
