What an amazing and unexpected win for the Gulls which made it all the more sweeter. None of us present today really saw this coming. Yes, the 4-1 score line did flatter Torquay somewhat but for once Torquay were clinical in front of goal and the whole team defended resolutely as a unit in defence. It was a timely boost with Marsh and Berry returning from injury, 2 of Torquay's stronger performers. The sponsors MOTM went to the whole team!
Torquay kicked towards the family stand in the first against a strong wind. The opening period was quite low key which suited Torquay. Forest Green tried a couple of long range efforts that were just off target. Worryingly Lavercombe seemed slow to react which did not fill me with confidence. My worst fears were confirmed when another long range effort hit the back of the net with Lavercombe static. Whether he was unsighted I do not know, but his confidence levels seemed low and he seemed a weak link. Torquay however responded immediately with an opportunist goal by Marsh. It was debateable if the ball had crossed the line but the linesman flagged and the referee pointed to the half-way line. Both Marsh and Wright in attack struck a good understanding and both have pace to worry the opposition. Marsh's second goal was from a header thanks to a lovely cross on the left from Richards following a short corner. Marsh is the only striker we've had this season who has a habit of being in the right place at the right time. Since the departure of Hurst, Torquay's has had no other player who we can rely on to score. There were some really strong first half performances from Berry, Butler and even Heslop with crunching tackles and above all battling commitment. There was a mix up when Smith headed the ball into the danger area in the penalty box, Gerring hesitated and Forest Green were through on goal. Gerring made a last ditch tackle from behind and got away with it.
Forest Green were through on goal early in the second half on our right but Lavercombe stood up well and saved with his legs. Torquay were less of a threat in the second half and Forest Green had several corners. Torquay kept solid and Lavercombe grew in confidence with safe handling. It seemed a case if Torquay could hold out for the rest of the match. Briscoe replaced goal hero Marsh which proved to be an inspired substitution. On the counter, Briscoe broke away and tried to round their keeper. The ball broke loose and right back Berry, of all players, was there to plant to ball in the net. Plainmoor erupted and Forest Green looked a beaten side. Wright following a defensive lapse then had their keeper to beat on our right and buried the ball powerfully low in their far corner.
At the final whistle Gulls fans finally had something to cheer about and we all enjoyed the moment. We are still a long way behind but hopefully today will give us a glimmer of hope? It seems Ajala and Daniel will re-join us soon and with our injured players coming back, our squad will at least have some decent options again. Even Big-Ex was on the bench today. It is still a really big ask to get out of this scrap and let's at least hope we make a decent go of it.

Glad I went today. Good to see Jon. Thought the young Wigan loanee looked very assured between the sticks myself, Swanny. First viewing of Andre Wright for me today. Liked what I saw. A lot. Good to see Tyrone being in the right place right time for two decent finishes and I would echo the praise for Richards today. He gives his all. Everyone put in a real shift and it was great to see us in the faces of the opposition today.
Like others, I came away of the opinion that Daniel and Ajala would be available for us on New Years Day. Although have read elsewhere that the window opens on January 2nd. If Verma and Wright have extended their loans, that is good news. Are you still only allowed 5 loanees in a match day squad?
Lazily, I'll give some ratings:- Lavercombe 9 (Class. Always rated him) Berry 6 (Frear was a very good opponent. Well taken goal) Gerring 6.5 (Relishes a physical battle) Smith 6.5 (Couple of poor headers in the wind, but solid) Nicholson 5.5 (Am guessing Butler will be starting there soon) Richards 7.5 (Some trademark wayward passing, but great defensive work and break up play, astonishing number of headers won, bags of effort and classy assist made him Captain Marvel today) Heslop 7 (Tried hard, put Briscoe away nicely for the 1 on 1 leading to the third and did the simple stuff effectively today) Verma 7 (Quite like him. Pissed off the ref booked him so early, as a similar challenge by FGR not long after went without similar caution. Very committed and quite lively for a physical sort) Butler 7.5 (He had to cover for Nico as well as make a telling contribution elsewhere. Did well at both) Marsh 8.5 (Lively. Back to where he was before suspension. The player I saw at Woking. Nice.) Wright 8.5 (Hope that loan has been extended. Good lad. Like him.)

A thriller. Now that's what I call a Christmas present!
A lot of talk about where did that result come from? KN took a lot of criticism for the Facebook post and TSW interview. However it seemed to be lost that he was sticking up for his players and supporting them. Yesterday they played for him, played as a team and played their socks off.
Well done Nico! COYY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts guys. We need to hit 1.5 points per game to achieve safety so this gives us hope as well as some much needed confidence for the players.

Given the injury problems that still bedevil us, King Kev put together a reasonable starting eleven for this Boxing Day encounter. Crowd favourite Exodus found a place on the bench, sat alongside Louis Briscoe who had his turkey sandwiches wrapped in tinfoil carefully balanced on his lap. The Good Shepherd was nowhere to be seen, and, it was rumoured, had been advised to find another flock to watch.
According to many observers, Shep's commitment to the cause during last Saturday's game at Chester, wasn't all it might have been. Sympathy was in short supply, and an 'He's made his Murombedzi, so he can lie in it', attitude to his exclusion from the match day squad was very much the order of the day.
Cox's slackers have had to be tolerated by King Kev far more than is ideal, due to the well documented hurdles placed in the way of recruiting reasonable replacements.
Our watches ticked past the 15 second mark, still with no goals conceded. All the proof required to underline that Kev and Robbie had tightened up the Gulls defence since the last outing.
The long wind assisted punts downfield from FGR keeper Arnold caused a few first half problems. Three in a row we made a hash of getting a firm defensive head on. Nathan Smith's noggin helped one on for a corner to FGR. The resulting flag kick was partially cleared, but fell to Marsh-Brown who was positioned centrally just outside the 18 yard box. He hit a lovely controlled volley over the heads of those in the crowded penalty area, and which then dipped into the corner of the net to give our Gloucestershire visitors the lead.
The concern then was how many of the home supporters would start losing the battle with their 'inner Brucie' ? But while these personal struggles were being fought out in the stands, Kev's brave battlers were in the process of responding in the best way possible, by going up the other end and quickly equalising.
And then a lovely cross from Cap'n Courtney 15 minutes later, enabled Marsh to double his tally with a firm close range header that gave us a half time scoreline of
Gulls 2 Veggies 1.
The C.E.O, his casual dress including what appeared to be the top half of a blue and yellow romper suit, announced 50/50 ticket number 01603 would provide a £225 Christmas bonus for some lucky spectator.
Browsing the programme, I read the Chairman's comments. He used his column to mention the groundshare agreement with Truro and inform us that the deal 'will allow us to carry out extensive drainage work on the pitch during the summer'
Then turning the page to see what The C.E.O has to say we learn that the Truro deal will allow us 'to carry out extensive drainage work on the pitch over the summer'
At least those at the top are clearly singing from the same hymn sheet !
Goals galore on Page 13, as Phil Lee had a moan: 'There was a time when the goals in all four divisions had a distinctive and unique appearance allowing the eagle-eyed fan to be able to correctly identify the ground in question simply from the shape of it's goals.
The rich array of stanchion types and netting have given way to the generic box-type goal nets which always used to be synonymous with games played in Europe. Where this drive for bland generic conformity has come from is a mystery.
Was there a directive from the Premier league instructing clubs to fall in line a stop, and install these type of goals. Even the iconic goals at Wembley vanished at the start of Euro96, to be replaced by the dreaded 'box' of net !'
The second half hadn't been under way long before Dan Lavercombe was called into action. Kurtis Guthrie had space close in, controlled the ball well, and fired it on target but Dan saved well, knocking the shot away for a corner.
Heading toward the 70th minute and Big Jon Parkin was substituted, calling time on his afternoon battle with Ben Gerring.
Twinkle toes Briscoe hadn't been on long before he tied the FGR defence in knots, and deserved the goal himself, but when the ball fell to Durrell Berry, it was the full back who accurately slotted it into the net to further increase our lead.
Berry had endured a torrid afternoon against the skilful and speedy Elliott Frear. Combining with the blonde haired Marcus Kelly behind him, FGR's left side looked particularly strong. Berry stuck to his task with perseverance and will surely face few better opponents during the season than Frear. That Berry had the determination and energy to get up field to support the attack as late into the game as the 83rd minute, is a tribute to his whole hearted display, and it was good to see his name on the scoresheet.
King Kev used the goal celebration time to communicate with the bench and organise his own substitution. My 'Man Of The Match' Dan Butler, dropping back into Kev's left back slot, while Josh Carmichael's fresh legs brought new energy to midfield for the closing minutes.
Andre Wright coolly rounded the keeper to slot home a 4th for us, and persuade the FGR fans behind that goal that they really would be better off heading for the exits than watching the final minutes of this particular Boxing Day Massacre.

Boxing Day football - marvellous, isn't it?
A couple of hours up at Plainmoor with your mates squeezed in between the turkey sandwiches and turkey and chips.
Good to see Rob C and his famous cricketing daughter.
Romford Kev seemed to be full of festive cheer and it turned out he was rather pleased with himself for outfoxing the bookies. He had money on Forest Green at 100-1 to win 6-0. Consensus was that, although this was overpriced, he would be lucky to cash in - although opinion was divided as to whether that was because FGR would score more than or less than six. The clever bit was that he had more than covered this bet by getting money on FGR to win by three or more at odds of 4 to 1. Like taking candy from a baby.
Now some of you might know that my good friend Chelston likes nothing better than a really good moan. No hot water over xmas, the Dumpling serving poor quality pie and beer and TUFC being utterly useless should have seen the grand old man in his element.
Rather worryingly, it all seemed to have got too much for him. He has even got confused about the old Chelston-style bets which used to serve as a poorly disguised attempt to get free curry. He has now promised to pay for an all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink curry night if TUFC avoids relegation with no payout the other way at all.
Although feeling a little guilty at taking advantage of someone who is clinically depressed, I did manage to nail down the terms and conditions. If TUFC finishes bottom and four teams are relegated for financial irregularities, I still win. I will carefully monitor three or four clubs' finances and if I start to feel optimistic I may employ Jon Parkin or Scott Corderoy as my personal trainer to get me in good shape for the big day.
I had mused on what players I thought were fit as I entered the ground and was expecting Heslop at RB, Carmichael CM, Murombedzi wide right, Briscoe up front and a four man bench of Corderoy, Hancox, Chaney and Finch.
But good news - Berry, Richards and Marsh all fit and we even had Exodus on the bench. Chaney and Hancox watched from the stands and Shep is apparently now deemed surplus to requirements. He's a player with the raw ability to play two or three leagues up from TUFC, but always looked more likely to end up playing two or three leagues down from TUFC. It's all well and good running rings around Cullompton players at Coach Road, but it's all pretty pointless if you can't or won't pass, can't or won't cross and can't shoot accurately.
What can you say about the match? We played really well AND we had the rub of the green. The pace and movement of Wright and Marsh up front makes a huge difference. Courtney Richards was inspirational. The whole team played well.
When the third went in, Kev was still confident of cashing in at 3-6. When the fourth went in, he was still clinging to the hope of a 4-7, but for the first time he started to feel his winnings were in doubt.
In the end, he ripped up his betting slips with a big smile. Some things are more important than money. Even Chelston was beaming from ear to ear - the first time he has looked happy since 1973.
Happy Boxing Day!
Is the start of the legendary Super Nico's glorious charge to safety? Let's not get carried away just yet. I will be checking out what odds I can get on Cheltenham to win by four or more.
