As a person whose mother used Cockney rhyming slang on a daily basis, I can tell you that a 'teapot' is CRS for a 'kid'. As in all rhyming slang, only the first word of the slang is used. Everyone knows that to take a 'butcher's' is to take a look, which comes from 'butcher's hook'. In the same way that 'apples' are stairs, derived from 'apples and pears'. Your 'skin' is your sister, from 'skin and blister', your 'boat' your face (boat race) and so on. When used correctly, CRS in speech does not rhyme with the word it replaces. So 'Teapots' is short for 'teapot lid', which as I said is CRS for kid. However, over time it has been corrupted to mean Yid. However, Yid is not CRS in any form; it comes from the contraction of 'Of Yiddish descent'. Whether 'Yid' is offensive depends on usage. Spurs fans self-deprecate by calling themselves Yids, but to me it is still offensive slang, as is the current use of 'teapots' to mean Jews. Thanks for that, Flo. Agree it is offensive and pleased to read Register will now desist with that one.

At last, a sensible post on this subject. A little bit of homework done, to make an interesting, intelligent and non-aggressive post. Someone has now said they find the words offensive, so I will discontinue their use, unless of course it happens to be the China Clay version. A lot of cockney rhyming slang has become common slang, UK-wide. One such word in rhyming slang that always makes me smile is 'berk'. It is used freely by all 4 corners of society, when most have no idea just how derogatory and offensive it really is. If I tell you that 'berk' it is short for 'Berkeley hunt', you can probably work out the rest! Now that I didn't know to be honest...you never stop learning so they say. It's not a word I have often used, but it's nice to know anyway.

Q: Have you heard about McDonald’s new Corbyn Value Meal? A: Order anything you like, cos the bloke behind you is going to pay for it. There are a lot of jokes going around about Corbett and his insane plans for this country. Incredibly, he might be putting those plans into operation in a weeks time, because I think this upcoming election is going to be pretty tight! If Corbett does get into power, I'll tell you the story of Canaan Banana!

Reg If it's the story about the whole of the Zimbabwe media being officially notified that they were never to describe the outcome of President Banana's talks with other foreign leaders as 'fruitful', then that story is a load of 'J.Arthur' ..... as any Cockney will tell you.

Some of my best friends are Snowflakes ...particularly on this Forum, and I often marvel at their ingenuity and inventiveness with, for instance, the creation of the recent ‘Teapotgate’ that rocked TFF to it’s very foundations, and the imaginative use of so much more that can be turned into a speech crime if you try hard enough. However if a new category of ‘offence’ : ‘emoji crime’ is going to be another thing to look out for, then I think it’s only fair that clear guidelines to their use be set out in advance. If this new category of ‘wrong post’ is to be recognised, then we’re going to be seeing the ‘Offence klaxons’ being activated even more often than they are at present. Let’s hope the Admins have enough replacement batteries in stock, as demand is surely to be high. But as a starting point we do need to have each emoji explained to us, and what it’s official TFF classification is. It seems to have been free choice up to now, and a free decision as to appropriateness of use. If that decision is now passing from the poster and instead to the reader, then let’s get the necessary safeguards in place, so that from the very outset we can keep ‘emoji offence crime’ to its very minimum.

I've been getting a little Goose Stepping practice in, just in case Corbett gets into power.

What are you going to call this thread now. The Long-Bailyista year doesn't sound right.

plainmoorpete Too true Pete. 'The Long Road To Socialism 2025' is a bit of a mouthful as well. But we need a general Labour Party thread, and this one will save the need to start something fresh for the upcoming leadership race. So if anyone wants to suggest a reasonably sensible alternative thread title, I'm sure a friendly Admin would make the adjustment for us.

But we need a general Labour Party thread I reckon that might be a minority held view.
