He is too young to go for nothing if we offered him another contract at the expiry of a one year deal at the same or better terms. You're into tribunal territory as an Under 24 then. Reviewing it during the duration of the contract, as Alpine suggests, is always an option available to the club and makes sense.

Am hoping Keating's signing might tempt Williams back. Until we offer him anything that may seem unlikely. His late season form coincided with Keating being here. Such a shame about Williams. Especially when the manager then comes out and says you are guaranteed goals with him. I suppose if you have a cut in your so-called top half budget then that's the sort of risk you have to take as Manager. Fingers crossed there are no other takers for Brett and he accepts a reduced rate with us.

If we only put him on a one season deal then he could walk for nothing after a good season. Its all a balancing act in reality though isn't it? We could sign him on a 2 year contract only for him not to progress and be a bench warmer. That's budget wasted then (Cruise and Craig spring to mind recently). Any player is a gamble, particularly youngsters and I'm not sure we have sufficient budget to carry passengers. I do not quite follow your argument - unless you are suggesting that we only ever give 1 year contracts and therefore never (or very rarely) have any transfer income! Surely, a Club has to take some risks in order to have any hope of finding some diamonds (Exeter certainly do and have done so to their advantage for some time).

See Rob's post a couple up if you don't grasp the logic of 1 year contracts (given our financial position) for unproven youngsters.

Well, it might (not) surprise you that I also do not agree with Rob's logic! To deliberately consider relying on the tribunal route is fraught with risk and uncertainty and hardly a strong business case - not even considering the fact that many other clubs in even worse situations than TUFC would probably be prepared to go down the 2 year route and therefore attract the players (by the way, we did offer Chaney two years and, whilst not exactly setting the world alight, could hardly be called a failure and drain on resources).

I think that on one of the Forums recently, it was suggested that a good many National League sides, with money being particularly tight at this level, more often than not hand out one season contracts so as not to be contractually obliged to be paying players over the Summer. As far as we're concerned, I don't see that we need to box ourselves in with a hard and fast rule. Had Nathan Smith been our player would anyone have objected to a 3 year deal being dangled in front of him ? Likewise with Cap'n Angus on the back of his mature and talented performances during the 'GreatEscapeOne' Season.... displaying a mercurial talent and an even temper....4 more years Angus ? Should we hope to tempt more established players from up country to come down to us, move house, and put the kids into a new school...a solitary one season deal might not be very enticing. Keating has shown promise, but is a long way from 'nothing more to prove' status, and currently I'd rather Shaun McGinty was offered the longer contract. But come flying out of the traps scoring goals in Harry Kane type proportions in our opening games, and Uncle Clarke might agree that there's business sense in trying to tempt Ruari to a longer commitment....that is if the Council haven't encouraged him to scrap his plans, sell up, and move on. What length of contract would our new TUST owners then be putting in front of Keating to sign ? I think we should be told .

if the Council haven't encouraged him to scrap his plans, sell up, and move on. Clarke Osborne invariably scraps his own plans when it comes to stadium building - regardless of the council involved. What varies from council to council is the level of destruction he is allowed to leave behind him. Despite the Herald Express regularly parroting Osborne's "guarantees" without putting them in the historical context which renders such guarantees utterly worthless, Torbay Council is fully aware that Osborne's appalling track record means that he cannot be trusted with the Plainmoor freehold. We wait to see what Osborne's plans are without the freehold.

Lease period reduction negotiations? I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting, I wouldn't have thought that cash-strapped Torbay Council would pay out a significant sum in return for a shortened lease. If GI owned the freehold, I could certainly imagine them shortening the football club's lease. Best to make sure that GI don't get the freehold.

He seems familiar.

link - very good news in that Like Young has signed😀 Great news...only 14 or 15 to go!! From the online HE Sports page: "Young's new deal is expected to be followed by more player moves over the next few days, both new signings and possibly one or two departures." Williams and Sparkes?

If GI owned the freehold, I could certainly imagine them shortening the football club's lease. Best to make sure that GI don't get the freehold. Brings the 'what happens when it expires' question back into play sooner and the whole freehold discussion repeating itself within a workable development timeframe. The long game. The leasehold at Reading saw a reduction in years announced toward the end. Of course, freehold is the worst scenario, but they can and have worked their magic without it elsewhere. Swindon is on a lease and Swindon have had their "enabling" houses there for years. I hope they decide to leave and get another owner in - perhaps one of the ones snubbed in favour of the GI creditor last time - as, like AJ, I cannot see one example of where things have ended well. Perhaps researchers at the Herald will tell us of one such example.
