As the American writer Coleman Hughes has put it, it assumes there is ‘a heightened moral knowledge’ that comes with being black or female or gay. Or just maybe there is more knowledge of being discriminated against. I can't understand how anyone could argue that being black, female or gay hasn't historically left someone at a significant disadvantage, nor that it continues to do so in many parts of the world. Has American writer Coleman Hughes not noticed that there has never been a female or overtly gay President? Or that the one black President was subjected throughout his 8 year term to racists accusing him of being African and Muslim? Does he not know that being gay is a capital offence in many countries, including some that buy their bombs from the USA? There are lots of things to get angry or annoyed about in the world. Only the right wing press and its overwhelmingly white, reactionary readership would consider so-called political correctness to be among the most objectionable. Being the American President (certainly in these times) is going to leave you open to a certain amount of flak, whether you're Black, White, Gay or An Other...look at the grief The Donald takes! Khan, (the London chap...I think) yesterday/today said Trump and Boris were like the Nazi's! Him being Muslim and non-white, nary a word will be said about it! If Trump calls someone non-white a Nazi...boom...the world is up in arms! What so many people fail to realize (including people on this site) is that racism, works both ways! The reason they fail to realize, is because it's easier to follow the crowd like sheep, and keep their heads below the parapet, for fear of being branded racists themselves! As I have said many times, the vast majority of people who use the word racist, wouldn't know a racist if one came up and bit them on the arse! |

I've not seen Sadiq Khan's quote but if he said that Trump and Johnson were "behaving like Nazis" he has a point. The law doesn't exist for people to decide whether or not they wish to obey it, nor does democracy entail shutting down Parliament to stop the other side from having an opportunity to defeat you in the House of Commons. If he called them Nazis then I'm sure he did so not because they are white but because of the way they behave. Of course racism works both ways, but are you seriously trying to tell us that white and black people suffer from it equally? I must have blinked and missed the black equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan, National Front, BNP, Combat 18, British Movement and so on. You should have been in Sheffield like I was when the English Defence League came to town and gave Sieg Heil salutes around the war memorial in the city centre. Did you ever see "No Whites" signs in boarding house windows? Did you ever see a black version of Bernard Manning telling racist jokes about white people on ITV? Did you ever have a black friend at school whose mum wouldn't let him play with you because you are white? Have you ever seen or heard a football crowd making monkey noises at a white player? Of course we know a racist when we see one. It's really not that difficult. If you're not a racist then there's no need to fear being branded as one; it couldn't possibly be simpler. |

I've deleted my comments, as this is not the place to vent about the government leaving soldiers out on a limb, whilst terrorists have a blanket amnesty. Actually, you were venting about me, and aimed your vitriol at me, personally. Apparently the fact that I've never shot anyone down in the street means my opinion is worthless. That says a lot more about you than it does about me, old thing. It's a good job that I live in Scotland rather than Florida because I'm sure you'd love to point a gun at my head if only for old time's sake. How you must love living in Donald Trump's America! Who needs old-fashioned ideas like giving someone a fair trial by jury when you can simply execute them yourself without having to worry about all that goody-goody nonsense, eh? |

Soldier F may be found guilty, but to me he's a brave man, who put his life on the line when the country asked him to. We both know that what is happening is disgraceful, but even if you're not ex forces, surely everyone should be disgusted by it! |

So at last, Robert Gabriel Mugabe goes on to his next life!
He managed to turn one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, into the Hell Hole you see today!
When Ian Smith was in charge, virtually the entire black population was employed...they weren't on fantastic wages, but at least they were earning.
Today, virtually the entire black population is unemployed...still it could be worse, Corbett could be in charge!
Being a Buddhist though, I will chant some Medicine Buddha mantras for him...he's going to need them!

Sadly, a lot of people will mourn his demise, not because he actually did anything for them or the country, but because he gave them what they wanted..Zimbabwe! The fact it turned Zimbabwe into the biggest shithouse on the African continent (which takes some doing) is irrespective...they got what they wanted...Zimbabwe! They voted for Mugabe, so how could they possibly be wrong! Zambia (Northern Rhodesia) also had it's unrest, and also had it's resident despot (Kaunda), but have now sorted themselves out. They took the white farmers from Zimbabwe, and are now prospering. Once most of the people involved in their unrest died off, the newbies thought, 'this is a load bollocks' and put the country to rights. I'm hoping Zimbabwe will turn out the same...sadly, it won't happen in my/this lifetime. |

AWOL, lol. I also went AWOL in 79. Gave myself up after 6 days (well, 6 days, 15 hours, and 31 mins, according to the 252 - funny the things you never forget) and did 10 days nick. No LS&GC for me (or you). You also probably had a lucky miss with 'Colonel Callan', the way things subsequently turned out. Took this off the EU thread to reply. Can't remember how long I was AWOL for, a month or so I suppose! Was seeing my then girlfriend, but her old man didn't like me so had to sleep in the car, in the local wood! Occasionally, the Old Bill* would wake me up and ask me what I was doing, to which I would give some bullshit story which seemed to appease them and they'd go away. Normally, it was one plod who woke me up, but this particular morning I woke to find four of them surrounding the car! Asked what I was doing there, I started my usual spiel, only to be cut off with the words: 'Actually, you're Reg Register, and you're AWOL from the British Army!' The girlfriends old man had shopped me! My girlfriend was in the UK, and I was AWOL from my unit in Germany. Got back to Germany and got 28 days, but had 4 knocked off because of good behaviour! Getting banged up thoroughly pissed me off and I bought myself out shortly after...biggest mistake of my life! * The Old Bill: if you don't know where the saying came from, stop drooling in your Cornflakes and look in! At the start of the 1900s there was a cartoon character called Old Bill, and he was always depicted with a droopy moustache. The Coppers (not now) also had droopy moustaches...the things we do to be fashionable...tank tops and long hair spring to mind! Somebody obviously saw a Copper walking the beat (don't you just love nostalgia) and said: 'Look, there's Old Bill!'  |
