We are now at the business end of the season and are very much in the business with a crunch match against Stockport, pre season favourites, big spenders and title challengers although their draw against Dagenham was a big set back with the points they need to make up. In fact, a top 3 finish may realistically be the best they can manage now and Hartlepool will be looking for a Torquay win who then may be able to return the favour the following weekend against Sutton.
Unusual for us to have a league game both on a Sunday and a lunchtime kick off as BT Sports take an interest but does give us a sneak preview of results elsewhere and possibly for the first time this season we will have, albeit briefly, a game in hand on Sutton. With this being an away game, we are fortunate this is being played on the last day before crowds return, a factor which has surely contributed to our superb away record of 12 wins from 19 games possibly together with the club funding overnight stays and think another away win out of the last two would be a record for us. Paradoxically, Stockport only have 8 home wins from 19 played but before you get too excited there are also only 2 losses in there. Their last home win against us was in 2006 with Adam Le Fondre scoring the only goal of the game.
Somehow we have managed to cobble together this excellent run with key players out and others such as Randell playing out of position but the togetherness of the squad has seen others step up at the right time. Moxey is one of those key players back and now in form and Johnson has decisions to make with Cameron and Whitfield now seemingly fit adding to our options and strengthens the bench massively.
Stockport have been on a similar run to ourselves with 15 league games unbeaten although may have had a few easier games in there but nevertheless have had decent wins against Eastleigh, Wrexham and Halifax. Paddy Madden has come into the side and scored 7 goals in 14 games, including one last week but did pick up a knock so will be interesting to see if he has recovered. Johnson sees this as a league 2 standard game and I think this will be nip and tuck and replicating our 0-4 win there last season would be welcome but possibly a bridge too far. It was a hard game against them at Plainmoor but we have improved a lot as a side since then and on our day can win and win well against any team in our league...
Can't wait. COYY!
