TUFC match preview Going to be a cold one today so wrap up well. While we are chasing our fifth home league game winning a row, we are not as in a good a place as that suggests and it will be difficult today against a team currently in a play-off position and with in form former player Billy Waters no doubt up for scoring a goal or two……

Wind has dropped, but still likely to affect the game.
Bad conditions are said to be a great leveller.
That would not have changed the odds if we were playing Dover or Aldershot, but to our benefit against Halifax.
Halifax are the kind of club I think we could hope to be if we didn’t have a sugar daddy. After their death and rebirth, they seem to be able to get in or around the playoff zone without breaking the bank. Maybe a bit easier to do in West Yorkshire than in Devon.
We will have to play a lot better than we have been doing to match them but no reason why we shouldn’t.
Any news on Hall or Wright? Bench at best I expect.
Would hope to go with a 4-2-3-1 (I know - stuck record).
If Moore and Andrews both fit would start them both wide. If not, I’d try Lolos wide right.
Don’t know how Martin played on Tuesday, but would prefer more attacking wide options.
Sun has just come out. Come on you Yellows. Three points there for the taking!

Hall in for Andrews. Little wide right? Moore not even on bench.

Oh dear 0-3 Predictably Billy rubbing salt into the gaping wound. Never in a million years did I think we would be struggling so badly this season. No hiding place for anyone now something will have to change soon and I don't mean the manager, or we really will be in a desperate situation.

Petef... at the risk of sounding negative... I think it is pretty clear we entered " desperate situation" territory a few weeks ago. Just not good enough. Looking unlikely things will improve in the short term. Anxious times ( again).

For sure Stig the warnings signs were there for all to see right from the start of the season when most of our better players left the building and GJ was rushed into signing players who are nowhere near up to standard. The worst thing to happen to the club was reaching the playoff final. Seems a ridiculous thing to say but its at very the core to most of our current problems. Budget was undoubtedly cut back we lose the core of avery good side and this is the inevitable result. I hope we stick with Garry - just a few months ago he was God and the best manager we have had in recent times. I personally don't see any alternative thats if he still wants the pressure and abuse he will no doubt receive from a minority.

For sure Stig the warnings signs were there for all to see right from the start of the season when most of our better players left the building and GJ was rushed into signing players who are nowhere near up to standard. I've never really bought into the narrative that Johnson only had a few weeks to replace those players who left. I may be hopelessly wrong but I would have thought recruitment should have started in January, at least with identifying players we would like to sign. At the same time, it should have been obvious to those close to the squad which players wanted to leave. From what I have subsequently read, Nemane, Waters, Whitfield and Cameron were clearly leaving at the end of their contracts. If we know that now, then GJ and Downesie should have been able to read the signs at least by March and confirm with those players which ones would be looking to move on. There isn't that much difference between the top of National League and bottom of League 2: witness all the promoted clubs who are in the top half of League 2 every year, and the relegated clubs who struggle in the National League. We should be targeting the same players whether we got promoted or not. Now, I understand that some players won't want to play in National League, but many would rather play in a side that wins most weeks than one that loses. So I see a scenario where we should have lined up some good players who were willing to join us in the summer. That we didn't is the responsibility of Pete Johnson and Gary Johnson. For them to blame the date of the play-off final for the quality of their recruitment is passing the buck, in my humble opinion, and shows an inability to manage the structure of the squad; in other words who leaves and who joins. If the reason for not signing quality players is to do with a budget cut then I would have thought that would have made its way out of Plainmoor as a fact by now, as most secrets do with Torquay United. It certainly looks as if the club got caught out and was forced to scrape the barrel to try and fill the empty places. So no, I'm not going to let GJ off the hook by virtue of a trip to Ashton Gate in the middle of June. On a slightly different subject, I would bet my mortgage on Armani Little not signing a new contract next summer so Pete Johnson had better be looking for a suitable replacement soon and not leave it until June before he starts looking!

In addition to lack of funds and our National League status..I think our geographic location might also make it difficult to attract players. Some players seem reluctant to move to Devon. Having said that Exeter and Plymouth not doing too badly at the moment.

Having said that Exeter and Plymouth not doing too badly at the moment. Players with a good choice of clubs will naturally choose a location closer to their home. If your choice is 30+ starts for a Devon-based National League team who narrowly missed out on promotion or 5 starts and 10 sub appearances for a club closer to home who are struggling in League 2, many will choose Devon. Of course the better players will have more choice, however we shouldn't think that our location is a turn-off for all players. And players like Ben Whitfield will see a spell with a successful lower league side as a stepping stone back to the FL (possibly via the likes of Stockport ).

Point well taken Rags. Additionally there seems to be little difference in the quality of football being played in the NL and League 2 this season.

I might as well put this in this thread: Southend upset the odds and won away at Altrincham who, no-one needs reminding, thumped us on the opening day of the season. But looking at the form guide, Alty are now 3rd bottom only ahead of Dover and Kings Lynn; having won just 1 and lost 3 of their last 6 games. Clearly form is temporary and anyone can go on a run of wins at any time (except for us? ), however if Aldershot and/or Southend go on a run of form, we still have Maidenhead and Altrincham to keep us company. And possibly Weymouth but let's wait until this time next week before we get ahead of ourselves, eh!

Another defeat today and until we scored two late goals it was looking like another heavy home defeat. At least our two late goals helped our goal difference and hopefully boosted our morale a bit. The way the second half was going at 3-0 there was a real danger we would totally capitulate and the score line would get embarrassing. I feared another Woking type defeat where they won 4-0 and should have won by a lot more. Like Woking, Halifax fully exposed our weaknesses today. They looked physically stronger, fitter, played some lovely quick, slick football. Moreover they had strikers who could finish. Their first two goals were beautiful strikes by Slew out of the reach of MacDonald. It was no surprise that Waters got on the score sheet as well. Torquay in comparison were too ponderous in their build ups and lack any presence in attack for much of the match.
Torquay started brightly enough and had one or two chances early on and some corners. Wynter got the ball in the net but it was disallowed and Torquay were playing a lot better than they did against Dover. We were getting into dangerous areas. Halifax then grew into the game and their quality was evident. MacDonald made two worldly saves to deny two certain goals. Somehow he saved the intial shots and then reacted by clawing the ball away and then saving again – a triple save. A few minutes later he blocked another clear chance and Lapsie saved the day with a goal line clearance. The warning signs were there how clinical Halifax were in attack.
Halifax finally took the lead with a wonderful low powerful shot into the bottom corner from outside the box that gave MacDonald no chance. Halifax then stamped their authority on the game and Torquay’s early promise was dwindling.
The game was put to rest in the opening 5 minutes of the second half. There was some lovely slick passing leading to the second goal and the shot was again pin point and impressive. Waters finished off when clear through and at 3-0 it was game over. There was a gulf in class between the two teams and we were fully exploited again by a decent team. It was now a fun stroll for Halifax.
Torquay used their three substitutions in the second half. Incredibly two defenders were replaced by midfielders / strikers. Don’t ask me who was playing in defence or what our formation was with only two recognized defenders left. I feared Halifax would seriously take us apart but our substitutes gave us some much needed drive and energy and gave Halifax something to think about.
Lolos near fulltime turned his defender in the penalty box and slotted the ball home. Then a minute later Little hit a speculative long range shot that bounced just in front of the keeper. The keeper mistimed his dive and suddenly it was 2-3! There was 5 minutes of added time and Torquay poured forward with an excited crowd but sadly there was no fairytale equalizer.
In truth Halifax were much better than us over the match and the 2-3 scoreline made the match closer than it really was. There is no doubt we are not good enough for this league and we are in a relegation battle. It’s been a dreadful season from game one and there has been little improvement.
We don’t have enough physical presence, no real pace and no recognized striker to score goals. MacDonald has been outstanding since his return, Lewis is our best defender by some distance and Little has got really good vision and can score. It’s just a shame other players are not on his wavelength a lot of the time and don’t make the appropriate runs. The MOTM was awarded to Wynter to some applause and no booing.
Where do we go from here, that is the big question now? Hopefully everyone has now woken up to the fact that we are in a relegation battle and won’t be saying absurd things about how many points we are off from the play-offs. We have a relegation fight on our hands!

If the board wanted to replace him with a quality manager then that person, if he really intends to turn things around will demand New players because this lot are fecking hopeless with a few exceptions. But I can see our better players leaving either in January or at the end of the season because they aren't going to want to be around this shit show for longer than need be. That means a major overhaul in the summer and it remains to see what the intention of the owners are.
