So, the semi-finals start today with a cracking game of Spain against Sweden starting at nine this morning. Tomorrow the lionesses take on hosts Australia.

I disagreed with miserable Jonathan Pearce, a cross between Droopy and Marvin the Paranoid Android, as I thought this was a good game. Sweden's "sit back and wait to hit them on the break" game was always going to be challenged by Spain's quick possession football and so it proved when Salma Paralluelo came on as a sub and really attacked the previously untroubled Swedish defence. Three excellent goals in the last 10 minutes sorted out the winner. By this stage of the competition "there are no easy games". Presuming we can beat the Aussies, which is no certainty, I would have preferred to face Spain than Sweden. Spain attack quickly and in numbers, but they are prone to mistakes and their defence isn't as good as the Swedes.
We have to get to Sunday's final first, but if we do I think it will be an exciting game.
Unlike tomorrow's semi-final which could be a one-goal nail-biter.

It may not have been a one-goal game, but it certainly felt like it and was certainly a nail-biter!

Had a quick butchers at the highlights, and would certainly vote for that Hemp person to get a place in our team. 🙂

link -Torquay women's club captain Danni Wyatt on reaching the World Cup final. The question is whether both her and the team as well as travelling fans will be able to watch this before they travel up the M5 to to play the opening game of the season against Portishead on Sunday!

Indeed, congrats to the victors. Spain made as many mistakes in midfield as I thought they would, unfortunately England made more. We had enough chances to have scored three or four goals, and so did Spain. Ultimately, our passing and movement wasn't as good as it needed to be to win this game, shades of our game against Nigeria. We lost the battle in midfield, our 3-5-2 formation was 5-3-2 for the entire first half with Lucy Bronze and Rachel Daly pushed back to full-back position, and by the time changes were made it wasn't enough to overcome the one-goal deficit. If this really is a transitionary squad then we can look forward to 2027 with optimism.
Well done Spain who proved to be one of the best teams in the competition.

By the way, I read that the 2027 tournament hosts will be announced on 17 May 2024. The bidders are:
1) Belgium/Germany/Netherlands 2) South Africa 3) Brazil 4) Mexico/USA
A Low Countries winner would make it easy to go and watch some games, as it was in France in 2019.

Oh dear, talk about the Good the Bad and the Ugly! To be continued… Let’s start with the Bad and Ugly: straight to number one—taking the knee…when will this odious obsession of look at me come to an end? As I have mentioned many times previously, by doing that sort of nonsensical shite (couldn’t think of a better word) you are cow towing to your opponent, you are becoming like a mild mannered Bull…and we all know what the Spanish do to mild mannered Bulls. I think the knee thing overrides the other bad bits to such a degree that they’re hardly worth mentioning! To be continued…

I think the knee thing overrides the other bad bits to such a degree that they’re hardly worth mentioning! To be continued… Now the Good: I will have no doubt mentioned that I would rather be put to death than watch an England match…men that is. As I was on t’internet at the time though (trying to find the right clay to use in my tsatsa moulds) I decided to have a look at parts of the match, and what I saw was very entertaining. No rolling the entire length of the pitch after the slightest touch, no crowding the ref over every decision, in fact it reminded me of how football used to be played…which I found rather refreshing. It seems though that the team weren’t quite up for the game, and didn’t look as impressive as I’d seen in previous games…maybe because their knees were hurting! Final note: sad to lose but it worked out for the best, because if we had won it would have been unbearable—Public Holidays—Ticker Tape Parades—24/7 Tele Coverage…the list goes on.

taking the knee…when will this odious obsession of look at me come to an end? Not such an odious obsession as considering people to be inferior simply because of the colour of their skin. Or do you not consider that as odious? Notwithstanding that the players want to take a knee, so would you rather we lived in a dictatorship where free speech or actions are not allowed. Unless it is your free speech, perhaps. Shades of Animal Farm drifting from your posts, eh Napoleon Pew?

link - dear oh dear, what is going on with the Spanish football president inappropriate congratulations at the time of the Spanish players greatest triumph and then refusing to resign. Turned into a right shit show with footballers not willing to play while he is still president and even the lionesses giving their support.
