Mullion found their location difficult to attract the 'SWL circuit' players and found travelling a financial strain. The SWL was of course dominated by Cornish clubs, and although SWPL West would probably be about the same, if they were successful and made the Premier travel would be even more prohibitive. Relatively nearby Porthleven certainly didn't fancy the idea of Devon and Cornwall football when the SW Peninsula Premier was established in 2007. Maybe they are happy with their decision on the grounds of regarding it as the only option. But now, after once being quite a force, they are a very ordinary side in the Peninsula's lower tier. Helston look to have come the other way. Only recently promoted from the Cornwall Combination, they are now doing well in Peninsula 1(W). I assume they are seeking further promotion. Mullion may benefit if more clubs from the west of Cornwall are interested in joining the Peninsula League. That will move more clubs in their direction and possibly cut out Devon clubs from the lower-tier western section altogether. The supply from the east of the county might have been exhausted anyway although it does seem most of the Penunsula's "casualties" have been from further west.

They were in the old South Western League for a few seasons before it became Peninsula. Their bid failed in 1991 when Devon and Cornwall Police came in as a surprise package and got elected instead, but the Mullion bid succeeded the following year 1992. Like TUFC constantly moan about, Mullion found their location difficult to attract the 'SWL circuit' players and found travelling a financial strain. Just for the sake of accuracy (if indeed it is accurate without the Rothmans Year Book to refer to!) I think it was 1994 and not 1992 that Mullion were finally admitted to the South Western League. 1992 it was another surprise entry from Devon .... Okehampton Argyle.

Football Club History Database has Mullion in the SW League between 1992 and 1995 with them finishing 9th, 12th and 12th. Okehampton Argyle followed in 1993 and stayed until 1996.
This, of course, was the era of Devon & Cornwall Police and FCHD has their membership as extending from 1991 to 1995. The site is always very finicky about points deductions and records three points being lopped off in 1992/93.

A police officer who said he had retired from football suddenly said he wanted to play again. He was a reasonable defender, so we signed him and he played in a midweek draw 2-2 at Millbrook. Three days later he played in a 1-0 win against Newquay at Millbay Park. The league secretary then phoned to say that he was registered to play for Penzance. The t@at had turned up there for one training session in the August, signed a form, and had never played for them. Anyway .... he never played for us again .... and never got promoted or on to CID!
