I'm sure a few people must have thought that Barton Downs and BBC Gull were hallucinating when they mentioned Dick Edwards playing for Man U.
I suppose it's a bit like Fergie putting Steve Woods in alongside Rio Ferdinand.
I now have the proof that it did actually happen. I had to drop my daughter down town this morning and there just happened to be a parking space in front of the library..... If Brett, Dave or Barton wants to PM their e-mail address, I can e-mail three scans of the Herald. One of them would probably be clever enough to post them up here - although the quality is pretty ropey.

Dick Edwards was one of the finest centre halves to ever have played for OUR club, he could have seen off Woodsie with whilst still strumming his guitar. I don't think the latter is even good enough to be the former's car parking jockey!

Thanks for this, Jon, excellent stuff. Plenty else of interest in the Herald: Keith Perry was the TUFC writer; Gordon Banks recovering from his car crash; Dave Mackay out of Bob Glozier's testimonial match (and Don Rogers doubtful); Crackerjack bingo results; Newton Euchre League. I've no idea of the actual teams fielded in that week's testimonial but I've found the programme which makes it look a like a Bournemouth Invitation XI v West Ham United (in the absence of Torquay United recovering from the Barnsley trip). My keenest memory of the evening is giving the Bournemouth team coach the V-sign as it passed, of all places, the former Bondy's Tuck Shop in Torre (prop. John Bond). Extraordinarily ungracious of me considering they were travelling down to support one of our players. Such an unfair act, if you're wondering, had been prompted by so many Torquay players following John Bond and Ken Brown to Bournemouth: Bill Kitchener; John Benson; Tommy Mitchinson; Tony Scott; Mick Cave and, in time, Alan Welsh.

Barton Downs I'm in a state of shock I can't believe a man who seems so well educated as you surly must be, resorts to giving the V-sign to the Bournemouth team coach as it passed you. I may need to check your suitability for this forum what a bad boy you seem.

I was in the grammar school sixth form uniform at the time - and worried about the consequences for days afterwards. Did John Bond ever ring the head to complain?
But I'll not say anything about my incursion on to the pitch at Dean Court in 1969 - it was purely an act of self-protection after an unfortunate error you must understand.
Passions ran deeply towards Bournemouth in those days - strangely they've been pretty much off our radar ever since.

Dave I see you`ve got the other vinyl. We never made it "on to division 2" did we. Who knows what would have become of Dick & Brucie if you`d been backing em on the keyboard.

I only got as far as the Rainbow International, all the Con and Labour clubs and plenty of Holiday Parks, well to be honest, I played in over 200 venues. Listen my singing is a joy to the ears and in my view far better than our Dickie's.

You shouldn't have worried, even if Bondy had rung up to complain. By the time "Crunch" had finished his bottle of gin and staggered red-faced out into the corridor, he would have forgotten why he'd staggered out of his office in the first place! By the way, did you see the old photo of Torre in the Herald Bygones a few weeks ago? You could clearly see the sign for Bondy's Tuck Shop.

Has anyone managed to put Dick Edwards' "War Cry" onto MP3 format for download? I remember it being played about 15 years ago before a match and I don't think I've ever heard it since!

God only knows what the Bournemouth players thought of a smartly dressed schoolboy giving them the V sign. Quality stuff.
