If the Ref was going to give a pen for shirt pulling in the box then we would have had about five penalties! I think the Ref and his one official were poor, but also agree that they were alot better than the previous bunch of bafoons we`ve had to endure. One of the lino`s did a great job, should teach the other one how to do it!

Disappointing result today after you would have hoped after Tim Sills breakthrough in the 41st. minute, Torquay would go on to win. As it turned out a draw was a fair score-line, and if anything, Rushden made the clearer chances. Crowd 2,161, about 40 from Rushden, sponsors MOTM Bevan for at least 3 cracking saves.
The first 30 minutes Torquay were dominant playing with confidence and had a few decent chances, the first coming in the opening minute. Mansell and Woods went close and the ball often went in dangerous areas but the breakthrough did not come. Rushden improved and Torquay's best spell went. In the 41st. minute a corner on the left was floated over by Carayol, Sills timed his run expertly, and headed in from close range. 1-0 and much deserved. However, Rushden had 2 decent chances near the end of the first half. One clean through was brilliantly parried by Bevan, another was headed over from close range when unmarked.
The second half was more of an even contest and clear chances were quite rare for us. It was through no lack of effort though. There were a number of odd refereeing decisions for and against Torquay and made the second half quite a stop / start affair. Benyon seemed to time his run perfectly and was through on goal about 40 yards out, but offside was given. Sitting in the Family Stand I observed at least 3 corners incorrectly given (2 for Rushden, 1 for Torquay) etc.
Stevens came on for the injured Sills with Stevens going right wing, and Green who had been playing left wing, patnering Benyon up front. Stevens provided the best moment in the second half by flicking the ball up and unleasing a volley from 25 yards out that the keeper did well to tip over. I thought Torquay were quite comfortable at 1-0 and Rushden's equaliser on 65 minutes came somewhat out of the blue. Mansell got beaten on the right and Tomlin hit the ball low and hard into the far side of the net giving Bevan no chance. The complexion of the game changed and Rushden were looking more dangerous whereas Torquay were lacking ideas. Bevan made a couple more smart saves and Rushden hit the crossbar late on. Torquay huffed and puffed but Rushden defended stoutly and their keeper was commanding in the air. 1-1 was probably fair in the end.
As for today's performances, defensively we were pretty solid with Robertson and Woods playing well in the middle. Bevan you could argue saved us from defeat with some fine saves. He did however miss a couple of crosses and made a couple of dodgy kicks in the second half that could have been costly. Nicholson was involved in virtually all our moves and covers so much ground in a match, as well taking long throws from both sides. Mansell was very committed, cleared the ball off the line in the second half, and was instrumental in our moves. Perhaps at fault for Rushden's goal ?
Hargreaves and particularly Wroe had quiet games in the middle. Carayol on the whole had a great game. His corner set up Sills goal, his deliveries were very good today and he often had the beating of Rushden's defenders. When near the goal, Carayol does not seem confident. Green today was pretty poor, very little came off today. Even in his favoured attacking position he made little imapact. Benyon looked lively and was unjustly given offside when clean through. However both Green and Benyon were well marshalled by Rushden's defence. After Sills went off we missed his aerial threat and ablity to hold the ball up. Neither Green or Benyon could provide this, and that's where Chistie could have been useful.
Stevens did well when he came on, was unlucky with his amazing volley and was involved in our better moves. I thought we needed more fresh legs for the last 15 minutes and I am disappointed Carlisle did not feature.
Sitting in the Family Stand, I can barely remember any chanting from the Pop side. Was this a protest about the new swearing rule ? At least the Family Stand tried a few chants. At least the crowd was a bit better in numbers today.

A word regarding the officials - I couldn't believe it when Benyon was through and the lino flagged - but I think that their mistakes were honest and i the heat of the game, it is hard to get them right every time. They were a huge improvement on the ones that we had against FGR, it's easy to pick faults in them, but I thought the ref did well. One thing that I do find frustrating is the amount of holding in the box that goes-on without a penalty being awarded - not just today but every week. There is no way that would be allowed outside the area, but in the box the officials never seem to give them. The Benyons offside looked on from where we were on the popside, he seemed to be behind the defender as the ball was as played - I'm not sure whether Mr Kipling was too old, couldn't see or didn't know the offside rule. Perhaps it was all three. There were several tugs and pushes in the penalty area - in the first half Robbo was about the head the ball in and got bundled off the ball. The second half we could see clear cut pulls on shirts - the ref was right where they 'occurred' but gave nothing Not sure the ref had the nads for the job either.

Benyon seemed to time his run perfectly and was through on goal about 40 yards out, but offside was given. Sitting in the Family Stand ................ Benyon looked lively and was unjustly given offside when clean through. "Sitting in the Family Stand" (or anywhere behind the goal) is hardly the place to give qualified offside comments from though is it and "appeared" becomes the operative word. The way the Law on offside is laid out these days is hardly conducive to correct decisions being made by those charged with running up and down in line with the last defender, thanks to it's ridiculous ambiguity of interpretation..................and even on TV tonight (Fulham v Man Utd) the commentator has made a complete arse of himself confidently proclaiming that the replay showed a lino had got it right when he had clearly got it wrong. Anything other than clear daylight between last defender and attacker renders the attacker ONSIDE whereas in the old days to be "level" was offside too and it had to be clear daylight between last defender and attacker in the other direction to render him (the attacker) onside. Also, the pure naked speed of the modern day game makes correct decision making impossible to achieve 100% of the time, but it does annoy me when professional commentators AND players and coaches for that matter; are allowed to make incorrect statements because THEY neither really know nor understand the offside law. It's quite simple Apart from the "active and non active" interpretation part) to understand, just obtain a copy of the Laws of the Game and bloody well read them!

A game that ended in a draw, but felt more like a defeat for me, at halftime and chatting to tufc01 and chipnicker2, I only thought the game would end one way and that was a good win for us. Due to another poor ref and what some will say was a mistake from Woods, plus Sills going off early in the second half and the team losing its way, we really threw away three points today.
Bucks said he felt Green was doing well out on the left and played him there again and wilth Sills and Benyon up front it looked a good attacking line up. Carayol was picked ahead of Carlisle and Robertson kept his place along side Woods, so I was not to unhappy about the selected team.
We started very well and played some very good football with so many players showing good control on the ball and passing mostly well. Wroe make the odd poor pass, but I felt on the whole he did not have too bad a game.
Our first real chance came as early as the second minute, Sills was fouled outside the box,Nico put in a great ball to the far post and Woods came around the back and hit a volley that flew high over the bar. Then on four minutes a ball was pumped high to the edge of the box, Sills rose up and headed it towards the goal, but it was an easy catch for the Rushden keeper.
On eight minutes we had our first on many penalty shouts, not one was given mind you and one was as clear cut as you will ever see. Sills was clearing having his shirt tugged big-time, nothing given but the ball went out to Nico, who put the ball back into the box, Sills got his header in and in the end the ball feel to the edge of the box and Mansell hit a fierce shot that got blocked by a defender.
Just two minutes later Sills flicked on a good ball to Benyon who was just inside the box, but Benyons shot was very tame and lacked any power and just ran to the keeper. Our boys were getting far too much physical attention from the Rushden players and the ref seemed to have missed most of the fouls that were being committed, but he could not miss the hacking down of Carayol by their number 8, or was rightly booked for his challenge.
On eighteen minutes we saw what was a very clear penalty not given, Sills beat the keeper to the ball and it flew up and was coming down right in the middle of the goal. The ball was going to land on the head of the jumping Robertson, who was barged so hard he must have move four feet while he was in the air. Carayol sure has seemed to have done some work on his passing, he played a great ball from the right out to Green on the left, who in turn gave it to Nico who had put great balls in all game, but this time he got it all wrong and the ball went behind for a goal kick.
Rushen offered very little in the first half, but they did win a corner and the ball found its way to a player on the edge of the box, he hit a great volley that was swerving all over the place and fortunately for us it flew over the bar. Benyon got another chance on the twenty five minute mark but is header was easily saved.
Ten minutes later we could and should have seem Carayol on a one on one with the keeper, we broke over the half way line two against one, Green had the ball at his feet and was running with it, it just needed the ball being played to Carayol, who had raced through the middle, but Greens ball was poor and was cut out with ease.
It looked for a second around the thirty five minute mark that Bevan had scored, he kicked the ball from his hands so hard and high and it bounced so far up the pitch and over the keeper, but the ball dropped just a bit wide and missed the goal. We could have been one down five minutes before the end of the first half as Rushden created their best chance the ball was worked to a man they had over in the box and he hit a good shot, I felt it was hit too close to Bevan, but he still had to make the save which he did well.
Then straight after that scare, Woods played his best ball of the game up to Green who failed to get the ball into the box as it was blocked by a defender and went out for a corner. Carayol put the ball right into the middle of the box and there was Sills who had to stoop a little to head in to the goal. Rushden still had one more good chance to score just before the end of the half, but the ball was headed over and the forward who was unmarked should have done better.
So we get to half time and I was so pleased with how we played and controlled the game and if we had been given the decisions we should have been given, we could have gone in with a bigger lead, but we all know that one goal so often is never enough to win a game.
I will do a post on the swearing etc on the other thread later tonight, but things were really tested when Benyon was put through so clearly on-side, but was the linesman did not think so, but all we heard from the popside singers, was you don’t know what your doing. On fifteen minutes Sills went off injured and on came Stevens, from then on we started to lose our way a bit.
Green went to take up Sills place upfront, but we still kept putting high balls up to him, that he was never going to even win, I would make the point here that Sills had been winning so many of his headers during the time he was on the pitch.
The second Rushen player was booked on twenty minutes, a real bad challenge on Carayol, that had Bucks going mad and boy he can show emotion when he wants too. Stevens had a good chance as a free kick found him on the edge of the box and he volleyed the ball well, but the keeper got his fingers to it and tipped it over.
Then Came Rushdens goal, Woods who had done so well all game, jumped to head the ball clear, sadly his jump was just an inch to short, one inch higher the ball reaches the half way line, but it came off the top of his head and went backwards toward the goal. Rushens no15 got to the ball first on the goaline and just outside the box beat Mansell with ease and ran into the box and hit a clean shot across Bevan in to the far corner,
How many times have we seen teams come to Plainmoor and see the ball fall to a player who takes with style the one chance he really gets in the game, while we seem to get plenty of chances and just fail to put them away. On seventy five minutes it looked like Robertson was clearly pushed over in the Rushden box, but you knew the ref was never going to give us anything and yet so many fouls outside the box that had much less contact, were being given as free kicks.
Five minutes later Green was busting towards the goal and from the edge of the box hit his shot high wide and handsome and maybe he should have taken the ball a bit further before he took his shot. Rushen often looked like they would get a second goal; they clearly had moved up a gear after they had scored, one fine shot from 25 yards saw Bevan having to dive to push the ball around the post.
We then saw another break out, this time Stevens was guilty of playing a poor ball that once again was cut out with ease and just after that we won a free kicked, the ball was rolled to Nico, who hit it well but straight at the Rushden keeper. We nearly lost the game right at the end, a shot was fired off by a Rushden player, it dipped and swerved and had Bevan completely beaten, but we got lucky as it hit the crossbar and stayed out. We had one more chance just after that Stevens put a low ball into the box and it went to Robertson, who was unable to turn it in to the net.
I can’t really fault any of the players, I did think Benyon looked far too lightweight today, he had been showing us a stronger side to his game, but he was pushed around far to easily by the Rushden defenders today. I felt for Woods, he will be blamed for the goal, but I just think that would be a bit unfair.
Carayol played one of his best game for us, his crossing was much better, he still hit a few to high and far to long, but he fully deserves to keep his place for the next game. Green worked hard and did OK, but is no replacement upfront as the target man for Sills, he needs the ball on the floor and not up in the air, those balls are well suited for Sills but he had gone off.
Hargreaves battled well and Wroe did well, apart from the odd strange pass, one near the end into the box and I don’t know what he saw, but the ball never went near anyone of our players. Nico and Mansell worked hard as ever, maybe Nico needs to change the throw ins sometimes, its always just long ones and everyone knows what’s coming and are ready to defend them.
So as I said at the start a draw that felt like a defeat, still its seven points from nine and we did not lose the game and we are still firmly in the driving seat.

3/4 pace first half, and about half pace second half. A massive lack of fight, effort and passion. Lack luster at best with little bursts of sod all really. Tim took his goal well and Elliot worked hard, Muzzy was o.k. Robbo fought hard, Greeno ran well, but no-one really showed what it was about on Tuesday or when we beat Oxford. Where did the fight go? To that I would say: "Never underestimate the draining effect of TWO away games in half a week". For any professional footballer (and this is really where full timers have an advantage over part timers) one of the most precious and quality times of the day is his rest period................not only footballers but ALL athletes for that matter. I know when I was refereeing, the end third of the season when the games came thick and fast was when the leaden legged lethargy and vulnerability to injury would kick in. Hours cooped up in a coach (read Greavsies' blog appertaining to the 16 hour day at Grays) with body tired and aching, little niggling injuries festering away in the system and sleep deprivation are often the precursors to a jaded performance and the type of injury Tim Sills appeared to pick up today.................and so often the apparent "lack of effort" is subconcious reaction to the previous heroic effort, not laziness. The season HAS to be judged over a full programme, not broken down into 46 little pieces.

Crackin' post that Dave - don't think Mr Thomas will write one better on Monday.
I thought Green was at fault for their goal by needlessly giving away a free kick 18 yards or so outside the Rushdens box

Today's pitiful attendance and it's comparison with those at Oxford last week (nearly six thousand) and Cambridge today (double ours) indicates the communities that are playing their part and really deserve Football League status before anyone starts going off and claiming we have a "rightful place in the Football League" If "rightful places" were the criterion for attaining Football League membership and we were under the old system of re-election, we would NEVER get back in the League. 2,100? Pathetic!

...I thought the players looked as if they had "left their legs" at Grays. All in all a point was probably a fair result, Rushden are one of those inconsistent sides.....today i thought they were on their game. So many (30/40 or more perhaps) balls played in to their box by way of corners, crosses and long throws......and very, very few clear cut chances created by us......points to decent defending by their 2 rather cynical but effective centre halfs. You couldn't say we played badly.....we weren't quite at it, our forwards generally gave us little to get excited about. Sills got his goal and led the line as he always does, we sure missed him in that last 20 minutes or so, he could have been the difference. Green was ineffective on the left again........he needs to play down the middle and Benyon apart from the run through on goal which from my position on the half way line .....was 2/3 yards ONSIDE, was kept firmly in check and had a quiet game. The Benyon offside decision was a key moment in the game.....as he was away and gone and one on one with the keeper........the form he's in 2-0 and game over beckoned. An exciting last 20 mins......with Rushden to their credit, not shutting up shop and always a threat......in the end we needed a bit of luck to get the winner, a ball to drop kindly or a mistake by their defence. Neither happened.....a draw though, is not a disaster, Rushden will take points from our rivals without doubt in the upcoming weeks. Onwards to Alty....

I spent some time at todays game to watch and take in everything that was going on out on the pitch, what was working and what I feel we needed to change.
Firstly Green must not be played out wide on the left, yes he should start and ahead of Benyon in my view, but we need a winger out there. I would much rather see Carlisle given the chance out on the left, play Carayol out on the right. Keep Green in the middle and lets not always just pump the ball up in the air for Sills to try and win, we have a player in Green who has pace and will thrive on good balls played through on the floor from our midfielders.
Next, corners and set pieces for and against us. I can understand why Sills will be brought back to help defend corners, but I would have felt with Robertson in the side, his extra height should be enough. But if we still feel that we need Sills in the box defending, then we need to have Green and Carayol standing on the halfway line. How many times does the ball come out of our box and we have no one to pick it up, or if we do win it on the edge of our box, no one to pass it to, as the whole team is in our own box.
Lastly throw ins etc, yes Nico has a good long throw and we do get some success from some of his throw ins, but during the game the defenders soon learn whats coming and then double up on Sills and we no longer get anything much from the throw ins. Yes lets still have some long ones, but why not try a few short ones to catch out the other teams defenders.

I have been working much harder on them and I do believe I can still do even better in the future. The only problem I have now is, I have to concentrate watching the game so much harder and that means I have to shut my mouth up and not talk during the game. Do you have any idea how hard it is for one who's nickname was once yapper, to not talk for one and a half hours. I will tell you, its worse than needing a loo out on the road and not being able to find one. ;D

There are some great posts here. The detail of the game has already been picked over. For me though the problem comes from the middle of the park. The quality of the final ball today, as on too many occasions this season was poor. I have become increasingly frustrated with Wroe as the season has run on. If we do not expect Hargreaves to be the passing schemer, which most of us don't, then he (Wroe) has to step up to the mark. He was no where near it yet again. Running around a lot but to absolutely no effect or impact. Yes Benyon looked lightweight, but the whole team knows that is his weakness. They must look to play the balls into channels that he can exploit with his running and control skills. The only time we did that the assistant referee made a mistake in raising his flag. I would not agree that this was a particular turning point. Benyon was too far away from goal for the issue to reflect a scoring opportunity. I do wonder what formation was intended today. In the first half, Green was often drifting inside. It appeared at times he was linking as a 3rd frontman rather than a winger. But if that was his instruction from the manager and coaching team then someone needed to tell the defenders and midfield, for they continued to play the ball into the vacant spaces on the left wing, well away from any yellow shirt! At the end of the day this was a poor performance against a poor side who were there for the taking. Most results went with us. But we could have made great inroads if only we could be more creative. Merse as ever is negative about the local enthusiasm for the team. Ignoring the fact that todays attendance represented a significant jump from recent games and that there were few R&D fans in the ground. There have been many occasions in our history where crowds have been well below the 2000 mark and today was not one of them. There are 6 teams in League 2 with average attendances at or below todays Torquay figure. Does Merse set to claim that it is attendances that mark out a league club? Absolute nonsense it's about the results on the pitch. Merse occasionally sounds like Bateson when he drones on about this. More concerning on the day for me was the lack of atmosphere. It was as lacking around the ground today as the creativity was on the pitch. Onwards to Altrincham and a much better performance needed. PB needs to think long and hard about the team to put out. Especially if the injury to Sills is serious. Much work for the coaches to do between ow and Tuesday evening.

Does Merse set to claim that it is attendances that mark out a league club? Absolute nonsense it's about the results on the pitch. No, I was rather alluding to the unrealistic and irritating slant that so many seem to put with their "demands and expectations" that OUR club is somehow "punching below it's weight" in this league, that we have a natural right to be a Football League club and that anything less than promotion THIS season should see the manager walking. It is clearly barely in the top half dozen supporting communities outside the Football League with crowds at Cambridge, Oxford, Wrexham, Chelmsford and Wimbledon putting ours to shame. I am no fool and can perfectly well spot the Football League clubs who have managed to attain and somehow retain Football League status on even more dreadful crowds than ours. Bateson WAS right in his assessment of the difficulties of maintaining professional football in the area, where he was WRONG (in my opinion) was in the assumption that the only way to present it was to batten down the hatches and run a minimalist organisation; but that was because he had to be a one man band and where things differ now is that the "burden" of responsibility is more sensibly spread between nearly a dozen people and that those very people are actively encouraging the fan base to reflect their enthusiasm and positivity by energetically seeking to improve the whole package of a visit to Plainmoor these days......................and a fat lot of thanks they are getting from the dozy old area!

I don't expect to see players run the midfield at this level in the same way we saw the likes of Russell (and Fowler), Steve McCall - they are few and far between and I feel that I'm realistic as to the standard of player that we can reasonably expect to join us in the BSP. That said, I've been generally disappointed with the recent form of Wroe in the matches that I have seen. Today, I thought that he defensive contributions were better than I have seen for a while, but his involvement in the final third of the pitch was minimal. I don't feel that he gave the team enough options enough of the time. His game really picked-up after a very poor start, but it seems to be dropping-off again. He was deservedly dropped by Bucks for a while at the start of the season - perhaps the game against Alty (who will provide more of a challenge on Tuesday than they did a couple of weeks ago) or Barrow should see him starting on the bench? Being a midfield "schemer" is more than just making tidy passes - something that Wroe is capable of.

That said, I've been generally disappointed with the recent form of Wroe in the matches that I have seen. With respect, I think it is a misconception to compare the way Wroe plays/is instructed to play and the way "Harold" and "Aggie" played. The latter two were both "sitters" who set their stall out from just in front of the defence, having a greater choice of passing options and thus could spray the ball out to wide positions as well as through balls. In my opinion, Wroe is more and "up and down" performer who runs laterally and tends to attempt to thread the ball through to players directly in front of him and because the angles are naturally much narrower, the margin of error is much greater...................a far more difficult role to perform in my view and one, that if undertaken; will always render the player liable to criticism from the crowd. Many years ago (late sixties) we had a player called John Smith who played this way and when this style of play comes off it can be devastating for the opposition setting strikers through man on man with the opposition keeper or last defender and maybe it's because we have Matt Green in the side that we are playing this way. Personally, I feel it is a tad over ambitious to employ this tactic at OUR level because for it to be effective to it's maximum effect, the technical ability of the players needs to be of the highest order ~ and Smith learned his trade under Bill Nicholson at Spurs and then Ron Greenwood at West Ham - probably the finest producers of passing football EVER in this country, and this was reflected in his selection for the England U'23 teams of his time. The "Prime Minister of Plainmoor", Tommy Mitchinson was another fine exponent of this art; and they don't come along too often in the type of football we watch, I can tell you!
