Torquay United V Chipstead FA Cup Qualifying Round

No problems Phil, I'm so short most walk past me ;D thanks for your report and I'm glad to hear others are getting a little fed up with the abuse some fans feel Is fine to throw at our players.

It was a pleasant game to watch and I think some players could be forgiven, for not being In top gear. As we know many teams have fallen today at the first hurdle, so Its a job well done and on to the next round.

I think Joe has fell asleep at his keyboard, he could be up to 3000 words by now On his match report, it will be tomorrow now I think, but still believe It will be the best Joe Barlow post In history

I thought it was a generally average performance by the team that was enough to get us through to the next round. There was a bit of excitement after the Chips goal and as they pressed forward to get a second goal the threat of a replay loomed!

On the subject of replays, I see that our next opponents, Mansfield have a hard replay against York on Tuesday night - a narrow loss on penalties after extra time would probably be the ideal preparation (for us) prior to coming down to Plainmoor on Saturday ;D I suspect Mr Buckle will be making a trip North ( or is that will North ;D ) on Tuesday

With the loss of both Carlisle and Robertson, Buckle was probably justified in giving Chipstead respect and playing the strongest team possible. I would agree with Swangull that it would have been nice to have seen some earlier substitutions. Having said that, it was nice to see Sills, twice outpacing their centre backs to score two late goals a la Gary Lineker

(Talking of Mr Lineker - has anyone else seen him don the TUFC shirt? (or am I just exceedingly slow ))

All in all it was a good day out, played in the right spirit and it was nice to read the comments from the Chipstead directors.

The important thing is that we are now in the first round proper!

Torquay United reached the 1st round proper of the F.A. Cup (Sponsored by E.ON) after a confident 4-1 win over Chipstead. Torquay United, who went into the match on the back of a 9 game unbeaten run in the Blue Square Premier League. Chipstead who play in the `Ryman Isthmian Football League, South` went into the game with no fear and at times looked as though they were going to take Torquay United all the way and gave a good account of themselves in the match.

Torquay United called up two Youth Trainees to the bench in: Jordan Charren (Age: 17) and Richard Westcott (Age: 17). Torquay had a strong line-up and showed that they were not wanting to under-estimate Chipstead. Line-up as follows:

Torquay United: Bevan (GK); Mansell, Woods, Hodges, Nicholson, Carayol, Wroe, Hargreaves (Captain), Dsane, Sills (Benyon 89), Thompson (Charran 89). Subs not used: Brough, Stevens, Adams, Ellis, Westcott

Chipstead: Wastell, Reid, Head, Delaney, Fleming, Aslan, Quintyne, Coleman, Oakins, O`Shea, Smith, Campell, Wareing, Grant, John, Brown, Wardell, Oxley

1st Half:
The match started with Chipstead putting bodies forward in the first few minutes of the game, creating an open game. Chipstead try`d passing it through the Torquay midfield, but centre-halve. Steve Woods was there to make any tackles that was need to regain the ball and with Nicholson doing what he dose best were able to stop Chipstead creating any real threat.

Torquay took an early lead in the game with a goal from Tyrone Thompson. A long pass was collected on the right wing by Mustapha Carayol who beat his marksman and delivered a low cross to the waiting Tyrone Thompson who shot from nearly 10 yards out, first time, Chipstead keeper (Wastell) was unable to prevent a goal from happening: 1 – 0

The goal seemed to settle the nerves the Torquay squad might have had about a potential goal form Chipstead. A few minutes later Thompson could have made it 2-0 when he had the ball by the right-corner flag and was able to cut back inside, Thompson choose to pass the ball to Mustapha Carayol instead of shooting, Carayol shot but Chipstead defender, Chris Head made a last ditch sliding tackle putting it wide for a corner.

Torquay were pressing forward and both Torquay full-backs Kevin Nicholson and Lee Mansell sent in challenging crosses into the Chipstead box, but were bravely headed back out by the Chipstead defence.

Chipstead defender, Chris Head received a yellow card for a high tackle on Carayol, some referees at this level may have given red for a high tackle but referee, Matthew McLaughlin decided a yellow card and a stern talking to was sufficient enough. Torquay’s back four seemed relaxed and able to cope with any Chipstead advance, though on the half-hour mark Chipstead delivered a deep cross form the right with Aslan heading the ball across goal for O`Shea to almost take it past Bevan who made a superb dive at the feet of O`Shea to collect the ball.

Torquay seemed to want to take the ball on their own, when perhaps crossing seemed the better choice to get another goal. Carayol again beat his marker on the left wing and cut inside but decided to take the ball on himself instead of crossing; Chipstead who were still trying to pass it around their team soon collected the ball.

In the 36th minute Carayol almost scored with a header from a Nicholson cross but headed over. In the 40th minute Torquay finally doubled their advantage with a some-what scrappy goal, a cross from Carayol was headed backwards by Steve woods and Chipstead were desperately trying anything to get the ball out but lacked communication, which left Tyrone Thompson unmarked with the ball who turned and shot quickly; the ball went through defender Hemming and keeper Wastell were both stood on the goal-line with the ball going through both of them: 2 – 0

Chipstead still carried on and were never out of the game and stuck to their plan of passing. Torquay though broke this up by interception by Hargreaves who played it wide to Carayol who jinxed to the corner flag before playing back for Mansell to cross it in, only short of Tim Sills` head. Torquay went into the changing rooms at half time knowing they had to keep working to keep Chipstead out of the game.

Half-Time

2nd Half:
After the ref` blew for the start of the 2nd half, Torquay went immediately on the attack with Roscoe Dsane shooting from nearly twenty yards out which Wastell could only tip round his post. Carayol almost contributed towards Torquay’s 3rd goal when he went down the right-win before playing it back to Mansell who again sent in a high cross to Tim Sills who could only head it straight at Wastell. Nicholson delivered in a corner, which Steve Woods volleyed over from 5 yards out.

Chipstead went on the attack with crosses coming into Torquay’s box but Scott Bevan was able to collect the crosses with confidence and did have an advantage of being 6 foot 4 inches tall. Kevin Nicholson missed from 35 yards out from a free kick. Thompson had the ball on the left and running into the box he almost got his hat-trick but missed narrowly when Wastell got the ball clear.

Chipstead were soon on the attack again in the 58th minute when a free-kick beat Bevan in goal but Oatkins missed the target. In the 65th minute there were pushes between both Torquay and Chipstead players, which seemed to stem from a tackle from a missed timed tackle from a Chipstead player; Hemming was shown a yellow card for the incident. In the 68th minute of play, Chipstead won a free-kick 30 yards from the Torquay goal; Daryl Coleman hit the ball over the defensive wall and over Scott Bevan and into the top right-hand corner of the goal: 2 –1.

Daryl Coleman received a yellow card for over-celebrating by wearing a Pirates hat. The goal seemed to wake up Torquay and with only a one-goal advantage Chipstead thought they could get back into the game and were trying to go for the equalizer. Torquay were soon on the attack with Carayol and Thompson both running at Chipstead goals sending in crosses leading to corners. Nicholson delivered the corners but were headed out or caught by Wastell.

In the 80th minute Carayol sent in a low cross after a winding run and was only turned away for a corner from Fleming, which almost looked like it was going in to be an own-goal. Torquay `keeper, Scott Bevan was still playing an active part in the game, collecting defending balls and kicking the balls in the right areas for the midfield to play to Carayol. Steve woods and Hodges both made a great pairing at centre-halves both talking and stopping any Chipstead attack and were quick to start off Torquay’s attack.

A few minutes later though Scott Bevan punched a cross into the path of t 2 Chipstead players who both went for headers and missed with Steve woods picking up the ball and clearing it.

In the 87th minute Carayol was running down the right, beating his almost non-existent marker and squaring the ball for Tim Sill to slot home from 6 yards out: 3 – 1.

1 minute later Hargreaves won the ball in a tackle and immediately played a through ball to Carayol who passed to Tim Sill to shoot home in another good finish touching the post as it went in: 4 – 1.

Torquay made a double substitution, Tim sills coming off almost straight after he scored was replaced by Elliot Benyon. Tyrone Thompson came off for youth trainee Jordan Charren.

Soon after coming on Jordan Charren went on a run with Elliot Benyon in support and 1 defender to bat Charren try`d to pass to Benyon but the pass was caught in the legs of the defender who cleared for a throw-in to kill the attack.

Referee, Matthew McLaughlin blew for full-time soon after and the game finished 4 – 1 to Torquay United. Chipstead players were applauded by the Torquay fans for a good game and were more than happy to show respect back to the fans.

Torquay enter the 1st round proper of the F.A. Cup. The draw will take place on Sunday at 1:00pm on ITV. Torquay United will be number: 77.
