A cracking win for the home team who must be hoping they get us in the next round if they watched the debacle last night. It's not Willand who, of course, will be in the draw. The game I saw ended all-square. One of the managers, being of our acquaintance, would certainly fancy a crack at Torquay United. Willand would have scored me minus 20 on QI! How about Frome? Another minus 20?  |

Yep, that's it: Frome Town 2 Boreham Wood 2. Frome made their visitors look ordinary for an hour; it was all Boreham Wood for the final half-hour. Adrian Foster managing Frome; Sam Cox playing in a holding midfield position for Boreham Wood. I'd planned to take advantage of a rail ticket to go to Whitehawk v Chelmsford relatively cheaply. But, unfortunately, I was under the weather and - with thundery showers forecast for Sussex - I took the less-demanding option. 4-4 at Whitehawk but I'm not complaining. Nor was I too upset that First Great Western doesn't carry coverage of BT Sport on the screens at Castle Cary station. |

A unusual trip for me during the week; to Shortwood United with Taunton Town on the team coach. And, with a narrow lane from Nailsworth up to the ground, this called for one of the smallest vehicles in the local coach company's fleet. Officials and supporters in the front seats; players to the back. A series of "pick ups" along the M5 between Taunton and Almondsbury; same places again in reverse on the way home. A messy journey at tea time; we got there at 7.05pm. Time for a pint, a cuppa and a plate of more-than-decent cottage pie for a couple of quid. It's not a bad game. Taunton have much of the play but go in a goal down at half-time. They miss a penalty, slip a second goal and then pull one back as the game becomes better and better. It ends Shortwood United 2 Taunton Town 1 (attendance: 76). Nosh for the players and officials afterwards. More cottage pie by the looks of it. My mate has whipped out his laptop and has done the match report by the time we're back on the coach. It's been an ordinary, unremarkable evening in the world of non-league football. Shortwood have been welcoming hosts; the Taunton Town officials are always a pleasant bunch; the players a decent set of lads. I'm glad I had the chance to go along. It's just a shame the Town didn't pick up at least a point for their troubles.  |

It's probably been a more "productive" - if that's the right word - season than I'd anticipated with respect to visiting football grounds for the first time.
Barnet, Braintree and Dover were my "targets" with Torquay United. I've now been to all the grounds in this division. Hence I think I'll give Nuneaton a miss. New set up; out on the by-pass; a fair trek from the railway station.
Bishop's Stortford and Hemel Hempstead were a "bonus" in the FA Trophy. I've also been to Whitehawk and Gosport Borough in the same division. Conference South certainly appears a very open league with no "stand out" teams. You wonder if, whatever teams are promoted, they'll struggle next season.
I've also been to Merthyr Town and Marlow; two grounds which I'd been meaning to visit for a long time. Two very different places of course. Indeed, not for the first time, I'm reminded of a friend who has either been to Marlow or Harlow. He can't remember which. Hmm. I'd regard that as the time to give up.

Another game; familiar names:  Charlie Oatway wasn't how I remembered him. He was taller, slimmer and less aggressive. He'd also aged remarkably well to the point of looking younger than when he played for us nearly twenty years ago. This wasn't old Charlie. This was his boy. Jake Thomson played in a deep role. Some of what he did was extremely classy. But not everything. I wondered if he would drift away from football completely. He's played practically every game for Bognor this season. Bognor's manager is one of their former players of many years standing. A local man by the name of Jamie Howell. The name was vaguely familiar. He has Football League experience. Four appearances for Torquay United towards the end of Kevin Hodges’ first season at Plainmoor. Paul Hinselwood played for Bognor earlier in the season but has since been injured. |

Adding Cams Alders to my new ground list. Fareham v Cove a charity preseason friendly with all monies going to Macmillan as this was in memory of Tony Kempster. With a £1 donation requested to get in and a £1 programme as wel if wanted consider the crowd at a head count was app 110 (great crowd for a PSF at that level) to raise Â270 is very touching. I never made it to Fareham Town for the FA Cup tie in 1988. I had a dim memory of the goals being shown on TV later in the evening and, sure enough, this rather fuzzy version exists on youtube: When Torquay United encountered Fareham the Hampshire club was in the Southern League Premier which, in the days before Conference South and North, would have been one of three regional leagues immediately below the Conference. That was the peak for Fareham; they reached that level in 1982 and were relegated in 1989 just a few months after those FA Cup matches. Fareham then had nine years at the step below before dropping to the Wessex League in 1998. That’s where they remain; the same grade as Buckland Athletic. They’ve not threatened to come back; a club from a large town playing amongst teams from much smaller communities. I visited Cams Alders a few weeks ago. I suspect the ground always hung around the sturdy main stand which dominates proceedings. It was constructed during the 1970s when the council had grand intentions for the facility. An athletics track was soon installed but didn’t last long; as far as I’m aware the other three sides were never developed. Now, because of the short-lived track, the stand is rather too far from the pitch for its own good. Nonetheless, in a league of modest metallic structures, Fareham’s rather stands out. |
