The board do indeed read the TFF and think highly of it and I should point out it was just one person (not a board member)who knows nothing about what the TFF is really about that said words to me that has caused the problems.
I'm sure they will make any changes they see fit to make once this season is over and that we will then be able to look forward to a much better season next season,as believe me they really are fans just like us and if you ever get the chance to talk with any of them, you will find out just how much the club means to them.

Sensational peformance by the sound of it listening to the radio. I thought we would win tonight but maybe not that easily. For once listening to the commentary was not so bad - did they create a chance in the whole game? Seems like we were also playing a lunatic who was officiating. Realistically though we are safe and thank god for that. We have had to do it the hard way by pulling off a fantastic set of results in the last four games or so. How Benyon has pulled off another ninety minutes of that power ruunning after Saturday is beyond me - fantastic.

Gentlemen, ladies and all fellow TFFers, without wishing to labour over a point I shall make continually in this brief match report, that was absolutely flaming sensational from the lads this evening.
From 30-9 (I think those were the numbers back to front) each player gave 100% and not a percentage point less, right from the opening minute to the 95th.
Aldershot's only moment of note came in the opening minute, with a shot that was well saved by Michael Poke, but from that point onwards, bar very few scares, it was all Torquay. This new away formation of 4-4-1-1 with Rendell in the hole behind Benyon is extremely effective and completely stifled a Shots team that had been among the best in League Two over the last six weeks. The great thing about playing like this, is the formation can so quickly change to 4-2-3-1, with Zebs and Carayol supporting Rendell going forward and Wroe and Mansell sitting in front of the back four making the side look so solid.
The opening goal came, as it should with the tactic we are using, on the counter attack, but it owed a lot to the strength of Elliott Benyon, who again displayed a new found belief in his ability that had been missing from time to time earlier in the season. He held off a defender a lot bigger than him, tricked into the box and fired through the gaping hole that the Shots keeper had left between his legs. A great goal and well deserved reward for a fantastic display from the No 9.
A second was coming for most of the half, with Nicholson's wicked free-kick glanced, I think by Robbo, towards goal only for the keeper to pull off a Banksesque save on to the top of the crossbar from near the floor.
But eventually it arrived, although it owed more to Carayol's whiff in front of an open goal, deflecting off a defender to Rendell, whose own scuffed shot seemed to deflect at least once off a defender before nestling in the corner of the net. Queue more scenes of delirium from the noisy and superb Yellow Army, numbering around 450 I believe.
Little pressure from the Shots still, but by now Torquay were constantly ripping them to shreds down the flanks, with Zebs and Carayol both to the fore. Unbelievably the Shots left-back, beaten all ends up all night by Zebs, was named MOTM probably because of all the work he had to do to stop the score getting out of hand.
Now I might be accused of over-egging the pudding here, by basically ignoring the second half, but we did exactly what we needed to do - put two banks of four in front of the penalty area and stop Aldershot being a threat. That, Sirs and Madams, was exactly what happened. The whole back four was superb, Robbo barely troubled by a supposed dangerous winger, likewise Nicho, but helped out a great deal by some excellent tracking back by the two wingers, who put in some yards going forward and backwards. Shots had a couple of half chances, but nothing worthy of a save, and Pokey just had to deal with a couple of decent crosses, but did so without a fuss.
Meanwhile all these positive second half scores from the other grounds were filtering through, and by the end of four minutes of extra-time, we find ourselves in 19th place and one win (or one Grimsby loss) away from safety.
A thoroughly well-deserved standing ovation was well received by the players, and everyone wearing yellow headed off up the hill, through the park and back down to their cars and coaches in the town centre with huge smiles on their faces...and who could blame them for that was the best away performance I have seen from a Torquay United side in years...better than the 3-0 win at the same ground two seasons back and that is 100% for sure because this team has been through so much in the last six months that there have been times when you couldn't have blamed them for rolling over and accepting the inevitable. Now there is absolutely no need to do that - just move on, play the same 11 at Grimsby and hope for 90 minutes of the same...passion, effort, non-stop running, tackling, and victory.
Marks: Poke 9 - I'm not going lower than that through the whole team! Robbo 9 - kept a dangerous winger completely anonymous Nicho 9 - likewise, and always so dangerous at set-pieces Ellis 10 - fanbloodytastic performance. Marvin Morgan - who's he? Branno 10 - sensational. Thou shalt not pass Zebs 9 - Brilliant going forward for 45, brilliant defending for 45 Wroe 9 - Best I have seen from him all season and dare I say finally growing into role as captain...even gave Branno a bollocking at one point, which was well received. Manse 9 - Tackled all night, broke up attacks and was all over the midfield Benyon 10.01 - MOTM. Ran his socks off in lone striker role. Kept two defenders busy and worthy of his goal Rendell 10 - Looks made for role just off a striker. Won plenty in the air, won plenty on the ground and I'm giving him the goal even if it probably was an OG. Carayol 9.99 - Growing up every time I see him. Worked hard helping out Nicho when needed and a constant menace going forward.
Sure, I'm biased, but I don't give a crap - those are the marks from the Shepperton jury and they are all well-deserved. A mention to about the Yellow Army, the best voiced bunch I have heard this season...a great mixture of Dotnetters, TFFers and people who've never heard of the internet. Kudos to the lads in and around the drum and let's have more of the same in the future.
I'm off to bed now, but glad I could write these words. I feel proud to be a Gulls supporter tonight and now know just how those who were at the Rochdale game felt. That was brilliant!!!
COME ON YOU YELLOWS!!!!

gullsworld on the blink tonight so no commentary, did anyone else suffer this fate?but i can live with that after that result coupled with grimsby drawing. They will now not look forward to playing us on saturday i think they will be pressurised to hell.No bore draw for us though,as in recent games straight for the jugular, and could well send grimsby down,if we win,sad but as long as it isnt us thats all i care about

I heartily concur with everything written by capitalgull. Ratings included.
We were simply brilliant. Local bragging rights for me in this part of the world. A group text from me to the entire Shots supporting Cricket Club reads, "Outsung. Outclassed." No arguments.
The first half we destroyed them. The second half we quickly let them know there was no way back. We looked more likely to add to our lead. A great spirit sprinkled with a fair bit of class.
Fantastic result and what a brillliant run these last few weeks ;D I now look forward to my trip to Grimsby and wont have to take the heart tablets!! I am delighted for all the players, staff and fans who were there tonight--well done all. I am even more pleased for those who saw the real picture of this season and kept the faith as REAL supporters do. One final thought....I wonder how the Buckle out parade is going on in the far east? ?? ;D ;D ;D
Just woke up and seen the result.......phew, fantastic!!!!! The last few games have been excellent from the lads. Which makes this season even more frustrating. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight if it hadn't been for Buckles awful performance up until the end of Feb we would have had a comfortable mid-table slot sewn up. This season has been terrible, but when we confirm our safety on saturday we can breathe a collective sigh of relief and plan for next year. With respect Longie, only a fool would celebrate this season as a success. It could be judged so by the outcome of safety. But not really at any other level. The club has shown little to inspire confidence that next season will be any different. Buckles management has been bizarre at times, the board have been conspicuous by their silence, off field distractions(ahem!) have affected the unity, the marketing and PR have been dreadful, internal club rumblings are divisive and we've lost a shed load of money. Looking at things another way, it can only get better!!

Andy excellent report and ratings! I didnt see the Rochdale game so was hoping that the lads wouldnt think they were world beaters and cock it up big style next game. In the end absolutely no chance of that. An excellent allround performance from the Gulls who totally outplayed Aldershot over the 90mins. They may say they didnt play well but they werent allowed to. Right from the off we started passing well and closed them down. Attacking the end where we were it was great to watch as our quick passing and movement threatened to tare them apart. Aldershot stuck at it and defended well at times but after missing a sitter Benyon did put us in front. The keeper made a great save onto the bar before we scored a second scruffy goal from Rendell but the type we have been conceding most of the season. Shortly afterwards we were denied a definite penalty on Benyon. The ref certainly didnt like him as every time he slightly touched a Aldershot defender it was a free kick. Where as we were kicked and shoved and he played on. Still at least we cannot say the idiot was responsible for the result as we went through the second half with a very professional performance. We all expected some pressure at our end with a bouyed up crowd but it never materialised and in the first 20mins of the second half we were playing in their half so kept them away from goal. Poke must have loved it as he had sod all to do apart from a save in the first couple of minutes. His catching and punching though were excellent when needed. We also had four minutes injury time which usually gets a bit nervy but we strolled through that and had all the possession. Just shows that these players can do it. Players like Wroe who has been terrible since he was made captain has certainly been far more involved and passing it around quicker rather than just passing across the half way line in the last few games. When we pass and move quickly we are a much better team and we are now doing that. Benyons work rate was terrific again and although everyone did their bit I must just give a mention to Carayol. He certainly impressed in pre-season but then seemed to lose it but lately he really has been doing the business. Not only taking on defenders at will but his crossing has improved immensely and he is starting to come back and defend. Bucks sign him up quick, people will be watching! A truly fantastic night out with the Yellow Army who were absolutely FANtastic, led by superb drumming throughout the game. Thats four wins on the trot at Aldershot for me, looking forward to next seasons encounter

Interesting that you think that Carayol "lost it". I am sort of perplexed that you can form that conclusion as Buckle never played him. Did you see him training or something. If he was never on the pitch I am not exactly sure what he was supposed to do. Probably the same with Nico though - he seemed to have lost it, then found it (Six left backs later mind you). Then there is Ellis - he seemed to have lost it for two seasons, but seems to have suddenly found it all of a sudden (whatever it is). Perhaps these players were actually good players all the time and it was actually the managers fault for leaving them out. Perish the thought.

I am no fan of buckle at all, and was one of the many that wanted him gone, but he has done a very good job in getting those massive 6 points, agaisnt 1st, and aldershot who were 4th. I have to give massive credit to buckle for those 6 points and pretty much 100% safety.....but still wont be singing "buckle is our king"...... .....well done boys!! YELLOW ARMY!!

Perhaps you're half right in the assumption that they were good players all the time. Perhaps its equally the case that we've actually found the right mix of players in order to accomodate all of them. Having a pacey, non casual, high in confidence and most importantly consistent Carayol in the team actually allows the luxury of Nicholson, as the opposition winger has to now drop back and help out his full back. If he helps out his full back he's less likely to trouble Nico. Nicho played for 2 full seasons without any competition. This year he's had to fight for his place and prove he's worth a starting spot at a level of football which he's previously failed at. I wonder how many managers of League Clubs have scouted Nico in the past when he was at Forest Green and thought "he's a talented bloke, why is he playing in the conference"? I'm very happy that he's playing again and proving people wrong. But thats part and parcel football isn't it? As for Ellis. Perhaps having Branston alongside him affords Ellis the luxury of knowing that he's not in the trenches alone and can go an attack the ball knowing that he has Branston's experience to get him out of trouble. Having big guy alongside you certainly did wonders for Exodus Geoghan when he was at Kettering. But I suppose you can't please everyone. Just like the Chelsea fan on 606 last night moaning about Ancelotti after his team go 4 points clear in the title race. Buckle out. He doesn't know what he's doing. How dare the manager of a football team drop players from the starting XI without consulting the moral majority. The young Exeter City upstart. Just who the bloody hell does he think he is?

I'm not privvy to what goes on at the training ground or what is said in the dressing room, but it always struck me last season that Carayol was the kind of player (much like Jake Thomson perhaps?) who didn't respond well to a kick up the arse. As others have said, his body language was all wrong at the end of last season, and that carried on into this, apart from his cameo performance against Dagenham.
Now, be it through coddling from the coaching staff, or the startling realisation that he could actually make it as a decent league professional, he appears transformed. I don't honestly care if it is down to the manager or not, and wouldn't assume either way as others are only too quick to, but at the end of the day his performances over the last month have been worthy of his current footballing level and potentially higher. Whether he remains in town at the start of next season is questionable but, as it stands, a squad without him would be weaker, just as it would without Ellis, Nicholson and Branston.
I can only trust that the machinations behind the scenes are moving to try and keep all four and losing two or three of them would be a huge disappointment; certainly not the way to go into what is going to be a massive off-season, when we are going to have to get the wage bill down...perhaps by taking in more players on loan or perhaps hoping that the market for reasonable wages returns.
Ellis appears completely transformed by playing alongside Branston, and is another player who appears to have a completely different attitude now that he knows he has a chance of being a really good lower league defender, rather than moping around complaining to fans that he is not being picked. I give him huge credit for overcoming that apparent 'depression' mentioned by Dave earlier in the season and becoming the credit to the club that he has in the past two or three months.
Likewise Kevin Nicholson has to be applauded for his attitude in the past month. No-one can truly know if he was cast aside midway through the season because of his position in the Hargreaves-Sills-Mansell axis (with the latter also being omitted a couple of times as well remember) but the parties, be they warring or not, have gotten over it and are now performing at the levels expected at the start of the season.
And that, good friends, has bred the levels of confidence seen over the last four games. There appears to be a new found 'family' atmosphere around the team and I hope, after the last couple of performances, that it remains for many years to come, whoever may be in the important roles in the club.
Nights like Tuesday need to happen more often, not once every few years!!

I would agree absolutely that your observation hits the case of Nico firmly on the head. There were many people watching the team last season and the season before, who were making the observation that Todd, Sills, Hargreaves and Nicholson would not have the necessary pace to play in League 2 without struggling badly. Skilled players all of them, but Todd's personal battle with the discipline and concentration needed to be "tight in the box" and appalling lapses in concentration and thus decision making (witness his awful Wembley gaff against Stevenage) probably "marked his card" first in the manager's eyes. Only the delusional would have considered that the other three had the required pace to play at the exalted level. That Nico has kept himself fit, lost weight (?) and determinedly and professionally done his stuff on the training ground and thus made recalling him a practical move is to his eternal credit; that the utilisation of Caryol and Zebroski (the former belatedly showing the defensive side of the game that he is capable of) has allowed Nico to return and thus provide that top notch crossing ability we all know he possesses to flourish to the overall advantage of the attacking options has to be acknowledged AND don't lose sight of the FACT it is Carayol who is operating on the left in tandem with Nico and not Zebroski showing at last some return on the very hard work that has been put in on the traiing ground by both player and coaching staff. Maybe it is the addition of the vocal Branston that has allowed Nicho's return to be a viable option also, for as Chris so rightly points out; he was certainly the "Puppetmaster" to Geoghan's impressive displays last season for Kettering and as he no doubt is for young Ellis for us. I have been told on good authority that Branno would love to join the club on a full time contract in the summer and just to think back to all the sanctimonious twaddle that was expressed on forums and in the HE comments at the time of his signing. Sanctimony possibly only equalled by that shown over Zebroski when we first signed him! A further word on Mustapha Carayol.........................From the first viewing, it was obvious to me that here was a young talent with raw pace, brilliant first touch, two footedness and a comfort in playing on either flank who had all the raw material and potential to be a really outstanding player. On chatting to him at Dagenham in August I detected a certain introvertedness that would need to be eradicated and was not surprised when he was subsequently "loaned back to the BSP" for a spell of sharpening up at Kettering ~ a really gritty and demanding atmosphere in my opinion. That his spell there coincided with a debilitating injury is history and only served to delay his blossoming. But true class will always shine through, and many's the player who has needed extensive loaning out during his development....................let's hope that Muzzy wants to continue his career at Plainmoor, he is now 22 after all and it's high time he ascerted himself and attained consistency!
