A great night for all Gulls fans ! A very convincing performance, 3 goals, a clean sheet in dreadful conditions at Plainmoor with a nasty wind and rain blowing towards the Babbacombe end. Crowd 2,122, around 100 from Cheltenham who were very quiet all night, sponsors MOTM Jake Thomson who was tonight's star of the show.
Torquay showed their intent early on with the wind behind them and should have taken the lead before they actually did. Thomson playing on the left wing was awesome constantly cutting through the Cheltenham defence with ease and laying off some delightful passes to put the forwards through. Up front Zebrowski playing with Rendell made the vital breakthrough after just 8 minutes unleashing a shot from outside the penalty area that beat their keeper. What a difference it makes to have a striker who can bury his chances. Torquay were rampant for the rest of the half playing some glorious football in atrociuos conditions. From another Thomson run, Zebrowski looked certain to score from point blank range, but a defender somehow kept it out from on the goal-line. Rendell scored Torquay's second again thanks to, yes you've guessed it, following a jinxing run from Thomson that ended with the ball running to an unmarked Rendell. Rendell did finish cooly. Cheltenham had some good moments, Poke on one occasion made a very good reflex save with his legs.
Second half Torquay really finished the contest in the 48th. minute. Zebrowski fed the ball to Thomson, who did a Ricky Villa, and dribbled the ball around 3 defenders and slotted the ball calmly passed their keeper. Torquay could have had more, Zebrowski had the ball cleared off the line, and players and fans alike were enjoying themselves. Poke made another good reflex save and Cheltenham should have scored themselves, their finishing often let them down. But 3-0 was about the right score-line as Torquay at last turned their promise from recent weeks into a convincing win ! Any league 2 team watching tonight would be worried about playing Torquay on this form. We looked strong, had pace and skill and finally we can find the back of the net !

...."How are that lot where they are in the league".......an overheard comment from a Cheltenham fan on the way out nicely summed up tonights performance for me.
We had pace and power up front tonight and what a difference! An exhilarating performance.......which could have led to us giving Cheltenham an even heavier "mullering" than we did.
Jake Thomson.......scared them to death every time he got the ball with his brilliant running and blistering pace......he was tremendous, scored a great 3rd goal after yet another mazy run to top off a MOM performance. He was run close for that award by the 2 strikers.......Zeb just looks so much more natural in a central position and with better finishing could have easily had a hat trick.......his pace and power were more than Cheltenham could cope with. Rendell was perhaps the biggest bonus though, he played the "Sills" role to perfection tonight and some of his touches and lay offs linked the play brilliantly and showed a touch of class. Defensively we got better as the night wore on.....some slack marking on two or three occasions in the 1st half really should have led to at least one Cheltenham goal........their finishing was thankfully woeful. It will be nice to see Charnock back there for the next game.
Wroe, Hargreaves and Carlisle had the midfield sown up for most of the night as we coasted to victory, shame we didn't top it off with more goals....but with this kind of attacking performance, Cheltenham won't be the last side to take a proper beating at Plainmoor this season.
.....Big corner turned tonight!

A supeb team effort tonight and in this form there is only one way this club can go and thats up the table. Zebs looked very comfortable in his strike role and Rendell looked the part playing off him but there was one simply outstanding performance way above our level from Jake Thomson who is no doubt destined for greater things. Reminds me so much of Theo Wallcott in his style, pace and willingness to go at defenders. They just didnt have a clue when he ran at them and he made good professional defenders look pretty foolish. His goal capped as good a performance as any of us have witnessed in recent times which was a cross between Ricky Villas cup final goal and John Barnes goal against Brazil. Mesmerising. The team work ethic is fantastic and the balance is as good as I have seen it for a very long time. If we can maintain this level of performance and keep Thomson and Smith who was again outstanding for the season I wouldnt rule us out of challenging for a play off spot - gulp!! did I actually say that??

Well done the lads. A very handsome win indeed. The small rise up the table is little reward for the hard work and effort put in by the team during October and November to try and reverse the 4 straight defeats in September. We're still some distance from the trees but tonights win is very encouraging against a side who battered Barnet 5-1 last weekend. Good stuff.
In a stark reminder to where we've progressed from I went to see Hayes and Yeading V Eastbourne Borough this evening. H&Y were hopeless, Eastbourne weren't too bad but it ended in a 1-1 draw with Hayes getting a very iffy penalty in injury time. A game watched by about 300 hardy souls and about four Peelers bored out of their tiny minds. It makes Shrewsbury look like some sort of futuristic promise land. Although at least you can park in the club car park for a quid.

I remember at the start of the season I and others talked at length about the side we were playing which lacked any pace whatsoever - what a difference a couple of months and some very promising transfers can make.
While I felt at times we were lucky to win against Chesterfield, and unlucky to lose against Bournemouth (the only other two home games I have seen this season) there was nothing lucky about this committed, pacy and technically superb performance.
The addition of Adam Smith, Jake Thomson and Chris Zebroski could well be seen as a triple masterstroke by the end of the season if performances like this one are repeated, and although Cheltenham were a team lacking in any defensive ability, the chances still had to be taken, and in the main were.
You could see inside the first 10 minutes that the Cheltenham back four was lacking in pace, ability and given their injury problems that was no surprise. Wingers playing at full-back and first-choice centre-halves missing was always going to be a problem against a side that really did look committed going forward.
There had already been two chances missed by Zebroski (one saved brilliantly) by the time he scored a beautiful opener, taking a pass from the marauding Thomson and firing past Brown from 22 yards off the inside of the post - his first goal since coming back to the club and first of many we must hope.
Michael Poke made one fine reflex save and Cheltenham missed another decent chance after a Poke fumble, but despite the odd slapdash piece of defending, the second goal always looked likely to go to the Gulls, Zebroski denied his second by a goalline clearance before another Thomson run ended with the ball breaking to Rendell to fire home from 12 yards.
The third came soon after the break, as the rain continued to fall, and what a goal it was as a break down the right from Zebroski ended with the ball passed to Thomson outside the box - he then strolled inside, feinted past a defender and curled a lovely little shot inside the post.
Poke made one more superb save, similar to the one in the first-half, and Ellis made an excellent block (with his goolies by the looks of it) to stop a fierce volley, but still the Gulls looked like adding more goals to their dominance.
One flowing move in particular down the right ended with the Robins keeper just getting to the ball ahead of Zebroski when, if the loanee had made it their first and scored, it could possibly have been our goal of the season. Another Zebroski shot was also cleared off the line and continual moves down both flanks looked dangerous as Cheltenham sought to end their misery by shutting up shop.
Thomson, Smith (hopefully not injured too badly after a nasty looking challenge) and Zebroski all taken off to standing ovations of differing loudness, and all were thoroughly deserved. I suspect anyone coming off would have gotten similar thanks, although a couple of players still had nights that frustrated a little.
Marks Poke 8 excellent when called upon Mansell 7 very solid Smith 7 looks like a real prospect Ellis 7 shame about his booking Robertson 8 brilliant against Hayles and later Alsop Thomson 9 my only criticism trying too much at times Wroe 8 passing masterclass Hargreaves 8 looked 27, not 37. Carlisle 7 learn to cross!!! Rendell 8.99999 just edged for MOTM in my view Zebroski 8.99998 again excellent
All in all a superb performance in tricky conditions. Hard to fault a lot, although Cheltenham did still have a few decent chances, but when you attack as much as we did tonight, there are always going to be the odd few gaps for counter-attacking sides to make the most of. As others mentioned to me during the game, this Rendell-Zebroski partnership up front looks to be the way to go. Rendell is a far better footballer than Sills, and needs someone with pace and power alongside him. You could see tonight that the link up play between them was already good despite only playing together for a couple of games, and add in the danger we have from both flanks and creativity from Wroe and this could be the start of something special...I hope.
A one-sided victory, a clean sheet, goals from three impressive performers and plenty of promise for the future. What's not to like? Nice to meet forevertufc for the first time as well before the match, and I believe I predicted 3-0 Gulls as well.
What a day!

What a terrible night at Plainmoor, no I don’t meant the football but the weather, the rain was driving down in a strong swirling wind that forced me and everyone else to stand further back on the popside and not on my normal place behind the front rail.
Bucks got the team selection spot on, the super brilliant Thomson on one wing, they brilliant Carlisle on the other, and Rendell and Zebs up front and when was the last game played when both our strikers scored a goal?
Tonight’s result is no more than the team deserve, game on game that have been improving, playing much better football, but not getting the reward their effort and work rate deserved. Tonight they did and the 2122 fans (104 away fans) who braved the weather also go their reward
Each and every player gave everything and Rendell showed why I have been saying for so long, we need to play him upfront. It’s his ability to play clever passes that bring others into the game. OK a few went astray, but he has not had that much football lately and Bucks needs to stick with Rendell and Zebs upfront together on Saturday.
No player form Cheltenham could live with Tomson, he ran past them like they were not there, yes he maybe have been a bit greedy a few times, but no one could deny him the great goal he scored and he was rightly the sponsors player of the match, but in such conditions, all our players deserved to win it really.
We started the game of brightly with some neat passing and Carlisle was the first to have a pop at goal, but just after that we won the ball in the middle of the park, played the ball out to Tomson who got his head down and ran toward the box, cut inside and hit a shot just wide of the post.
We looked well in control but then Hargreaves made a poor clearance that hit a Cheltenham player and the ball went back toward our box out wide, the winger drilled the ball to the near post and the forward poked the ball just past the post.
Tomson was soon on anther great run and he once again cut inside toward the edge of the middle of the box, made it look like he was going to shoot, but played in Zebs inside the left hand side of the box, Zebs shot across the keeper and a defender toed the ball around the far post.
It was clever play from Rendell that started the move for our first goal, he cleverly played a ball around the corner to Hargreaves, who played it to Zebs feet, just inside the right hand side of the box, Zebs hit a thunderous drive, that clipped the left hand post as it went, in, the shot gave the keeper no chance at all.
Cheltenham won three or four free kicks just outside our box all game, but they were blocked each time by our wall, the first one they got there was a clear foul on Hargreaves on the halfway line, nothing was given and as the ball went toward the edge of our box, Ellis fouled his man.
Poke made a bit of a mess up when he came for one ball and also badly miss kicked a clearance, but he showed why he is highly rated with a great reaction save from a shot by Hayles.
Zebs nearly got a second goal and once again it was the running on Tomson that created the chance, he ran down the wing and cut into the box and played the ball to Zebs whose shot was blocked on the line by a defender, some think it may have gone over the line.
Rendell was also not afraid to have a shot if the chance fell his way, a free kick out wide on the right was played to the edge of the box; Zebs headed it down to Rendell who was outside the box. Rendell hit a good volley but it was always going over, but you knew a second goal was coming soon.
Goal number two came about after dare I say another great run by Tomson, who was again cut inside and was looking to get a shot away, only he got tackled on the edge of the box and ball came back of Tomson and fell at the feet of Rendell just inside the right hand side of the box, who put the ball away nicely.
It was just after the second goal that Poke made a real mess of clearing the ball with his foot, Smith had done so well to win the ball on the edge of our box and if he had not won the ball, the forward would have been on a one to one with Poke, as it was Poke got away with it and I’m sure it was the conditions that had played a large part in the mistake.
Robertson could have made it three nil before the break from a Carlisle cross, but he headed wide of the post and so that was the end of a great first half, but I do wonder if playing the other way in the second half and more into the driving rain, if it would be a game of two half’s.
As it turned out the rain eased as did the wind and only got worse near the end of the second half, but by them all three points were safety in the bag. The third goal made sure of that and what a great goal it was, Zebs played the ball to Tomson who just ran into the box leaving the defenders around him for dead and coolly slotted the ball past the Cheltenham keeper, not more than this young man deserved and surely he will one day play at the very highest level.
Poke had to tip a free kick that was heading into the top corner over his bar, but did not have that much to do in the second half and seemed to make another mistake when a ball came into his near post, but once again he got away with it,
The Torquay players started to enjoy themselves and were playing the ball around in neat triangles and looked very dangerous ever time they played the ball forward. Carlisle did make one poor clearance and the end result was a thumping shot at Pokes gaol, but Ellis threw himself of the ball and he sure felt the force of the shot, but it was a brave block and just what you expect from Ellis.
That’s about it all really, a great night, a great game of football dispite the conditions and three points that were so well deserved, its games like these, on nights like tonight that reminds you just why you are a football fan.

BTW Sorry I didn't get chance to catch up with the rest of the TFF crowd (I bumped in to Jon in No 10s after the game) but since my old man didn't go to the game, I took his season ticket and sat in the main stand.

And finally, a result worthy of our performance!!! The general consensus from the pre match posts was to play Thomson on the wing and put Zebroski up front and boy did this work like a dream. Thomson was superb and at times went past their defenders like they weren't there! He had a hand in all three goals, the third was pure magic and deservedly was MoM. Zebroski added that punch up front that has been lacking for much of the season. I suppose the word of caution, is that although we put out a very good and balanced side last night, this was achieved with five loanees linked from the goal keeper, along the left flank and up front. The sliced clearance from Poke was in part due to a poor short pass played by the defender under pressure to his left side. Any less on the ball and it could have been a spectacularly embarrassing own goal! Great to see us start to climb the table with our goal difference probably indicating that we don't deserve to be down there! December could be a good month and mid table obscurity would be a great Christmas present!

As a regular at Plainmoor on the popside I stand with a group of current an ex local football referees so we were pleased to note that for once in what seems like a long while we had a reasonable referee last night for what was an excellent game for the Gulls. There were a couple of odd decisions but the game flowed well with no major controversial decisions either way. It was nice to meet and chat to Dave R on the evening.

What a great performance last night and must have been one of the best games Torquay have played in a long while - on a par with that sunny day at Cheltenham a 'few years back'.
Thomson ran at them like a man possessed and Cheltenham's make shift defence couldn't cope. They even cheered when their left back finally made a tackle.
Zebroski and Rendell up front seem to be the pairing we have been crying out for months.
Smith put in another top shift.
Poke made several top draw saves (a couple of mistakes but hey what a night).
How Cheltenham beat Barnet 5 - 1 is beyond me.
Anyway when was the last match abandoned because of Fog...........?

One thing I forgot to put in my match report, was the wonderful reception Nico got when he came on. I think Smith took a few knocks during the game and one was a crunching tackle on him, so I was not surprised to see him go off near the end of the game.
The fans cheered Nico onto the pitch and it must have meant a lot to him, he has been a good player for us and while he may lack pace has other good things he brings into the team.
Its strange really that while Smith did well in his first two games, people were saying we miss Nico's free kicks and throw -ins. But then its from them we have looked most likely to get a goal.
Against Cheltenham we did not miss them as we played the game in a different way and our three goals all came from open play and not set pieces.
