For the forthcoming Olympic Games, the sailing will take place in Lyme Bay and I wonder how much will be visible from Torquay! Sorry to disappoint you but you are wrong..................... The venue is Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour so you will not be able to see any of it unless you travel to Weymouth ~ you'd have more chance of seeing submarine racing from Torbay that week! Right you are Merse. Maybe should have checked first. Very close though!

Onward we walked and the ground really was very muddy and Aussie would have hated it as there was dogs mess everywhere and yet there are plenty of bins there for dog owners to use. Walking around the outside of Walls Hill you are first treated to really great views looking along the cliffs to Teignmouth, Dawlish, Exmouth and on a clear day I believe you can even see Portland. Further to this discussion of a few months ago, I was on Berry Head today with a pair on binoculars seeking out Portland. A reasonably clear day - albeit not exceptional - but no sign. And, judging by the indicator board close to the lighthouse, Portland lies just a touch north of due east, a fair way around the horizon from Lyme and Bridport. Now - with the risk of blinding you with scientific calculations - this made me search out an horizon calculator on the web tonight. There are plenty which measure the sea horizon from a given height (eg boatsafe.com/tools/horizon.htm ). But this one purports to measure the maximum possible distance you can expect to see from one spot height to another: salares.net/mountains/horizon%20calc.htmUsing the 87m OS spot height on Wall's Hill - and the quoted 151m for the highest point of Portland (near the Verne) - this indicates it's possible to see a distance of 77.2km. This exceeds the 74.2km between Wall's Hill and Portland suggesting it's just possible to see the highest point of Portland from Wall's Hill (although I'd imagine it would be a pretty small image). By contrast you are unlikely to see Portland from Berry Head - the calculation of 71.3km (Berry Head - at 59m - is lower than Wall's Hill) being less than the actual distance of 74.3km. Naturally it all depends on your altitude and a couple of Sundays ago I'm sure I saw a considerable chunk of Portland from Little Haldon (which is around 240m). Indeed put Haytor's altitude into the calculator and it says you can possibly see a 151m height 120km away.... Wake up at the back!!
