Well It's been a while since I visited the Bay. After one and a half years I finally came back for a weekend and a match at mighty Plainmoor. I'd chosen the Easter period to visit Torquay and included two matches, one at Plainmoor and one at Home Park, Plymouth. Home Park's a new ground for me so that's one closer to 'doing the 92'.
On saturdaymorning the 3rd of April we (me and two friends Chris and Frank) flew from Amsterdam to Exeter Airport. A very relaxed flight with FlyBe and another easy trip by rental car brought us in Torquay. We'd booked a B&B at the beginning of Babbacombe Road next to the museum. After dropping our luggage we grabbed a cab to Plainmoor where Dave and other members like Jon Timbo and Rob of the TFF ( I might have forgotten one or two ) were waiting outside the ground for our carvery. After saying hello we went inside and as soon I we entered the restaurant I sensed the smell of excellent food coming our way. After a little chat with Aussie it was time for a beer and some delicious food. Thanks Nina, it was simply brilliant!
After the carvery it was time to go into the Grandstand to watch the Gulls and the Shrews. I won't go into much detail about the game, you've all seen it or read some match reports. We deserved the 3 points and the crowd stayed behind the team despite going down 0-1. The first half I sat in the Grandstand and in the second half I joined Dave in the Enclosure, must have done wonders to the team as they turned the game round from then on!
After the game it was time to meet up with Ajaxgull and after a few drinks we set off to the harbor for a well deserved but small meal (thanks to Nina) and a good night out in some of the pubs and clubs! And Dave, the big steward who we met after the game works in a club called "The Venue". Had a little chat with him and gave him a tip. We finished the night off with a fine kebab before crashing into our beds in the early hours of Sunday.
The sun was shining bright when we woke, unfortunately we turned up too late for breakfast so we had to go into town for a decent plate of Full English, always good!
In the afternoon we decided to drive around the Bay, first stop was Oddicombe Beach. After a short visited we decide to drive around the Bay to Berry Head. What a lovely place to visit and some splendid views looking both north and south!
In the evening we decided to go for Mexican food and some bowling before heading to the pubs and clubs. We didn't make it that late because we had to drive down to Plymouth the following morning.
On mondaymorning we were on time for breakfast at our B&B. After checking out and chatting to a Shrewsbury fan, who was full of praise for the Gulls but not for Paul Simpson, we decided to take the touristic route via Paignton and the A385 through Totnes. We arrived at our B&B around noon. Again fine situated close to Plymouth Hoe and the Citadel.
We decided to walk up to Home Park, across the train station and through Central Park. I've visited the old Home Park before they built three new stands and it looks a bit boring nowadays hence the old Grandstand. What a lovely stand and it definitely adds some character to the whole picture.
Argyle fighting for their Championship status but they gave the game away by missing a penalty, Middlesbrough then went on tho wrap the game up. After the game we decided to go to the Britannia, a Whetherspoons pub, which is situated near the ground. In the evening we went into the town centre but the entertainment level was very low with hardly any folk in the pubs. We decided it was time to head for our B&B to watch the Football League programme where we saw the Gulls grab a point at inform Northampton.
On the Tuesday it was time to fly home. We had a stroll around the Hoe and Citadel before driving up the A38 towards Exeter Airport. Again a smooth flight but because of some heavy traffic around Amsterdam we arrived home a bit later what we'd hoped for.
All in all an excellent weekend, results and leisure wise!
Thanks to all I've met, you've made this weekend even more enjoyable! See you all next season (or at Gigg Lane on the first of May)!
