Incidentally - You're mention of that game being 20 years ago has completely thrown me. :oIt just doesn't seem that long ago. That'll be an age thing, I guess. Yes, December 1989. I'd just moved to Somerset from Lancashire and was still adjusting to watching football regularly at Plainmoor after a fourteen-year break. With each home game a 100-mile round trip, it took me a few seasons to get in the swing of watching home and away games. Consequently I didn't make it to Basingstoke and - from the programme box - I see I was at Bristol City v Fulham that day, a game of which I have absolutely no recall. But I had found the appetite by the time of the infamous trip to Farnborough....

But I had found the appetite by the time of the infamous trip to Farnborough.... I was up North at that time. Mostly getting my fix at Boothferry Park. Please tell. It was the season we were in the third tier and, after comprehensively beating Birmingham in the 1st round, we found ourselves 4-0 down at Farnborough in the 2nd round replay. We pulled it back to 3-4 and I think it was Duane Darby (I stand to be corrected) who missed an absolute sitter which would have forced extra time. Looking at the programme just now, I'd forgotten Farnborough were 3rd in the Conference at the time and I believe I'm right in saying the game was on Sky in the station's very early days. Farnborough took West Ham to a replay in the next round and, the following season, we again found ourselves four down to a non-league club at one stage (who?) Indeed, it was actually the start of a run of losing to non-league clubs four seasons on the trot....the others please?

Cheers Barton. Was the 4-0 down one Yeovil? What a showing on MOTD that one was. Yeovil went on to play Arsenal as well - I think. As an aside, my local village team, Badshot Lea (Combined Counties Premier) currently ground share at Farnborough.

Cheers Barton. Was the 4-0 down one Yeovil? Yes, four down to Yeovil - we eventually lost 2-5 - only to, of course, stuff them when we were a non-league club!!! Not Hillingdon...not St Albans...but the right part of the country(ish).

I cheated and looked it up - Yeovil played Arsenal after beating Hereford in the second round.
It's funny when you look at the teams for some of those games. Our side against Yeovil included Justin Fashanu, three future internationals (Darren Moore, Paul Hall and Paul Trollope), a few favourites (Chris Curran, Chris Myers and Adrian Foster), Matthew Lowe, Matthew Gardiner and.....Stuart Herd (who, you ask?) who got one of our goals.

That's the two. And who made his only first team appearance when he came on as a substitute goalkeeper in the replay against Enfield? In fact he was one of two young 'keepers to make substitute appearances that season. The other?

Bayes was the 'keeper who went off on both occasions...once sent off, once injured (I think).... In both cases it was their only first team appearance.
