TUFC honours

I'd forgotten that Darryl had asked me about this until discussion of Hutch's Devon Bowl medals reminded me.

If anyone can add anything or can spot any errors, please feel free to add comments.

The East Devon Football Association Challenge Cup (first played for in 1903/04) is not the same as the Devon Senior Cup (first played for in 1889/1890). I deliberately left it off our “first team honours list” as it was Town’s reserve team that won the trophy in 1910/11 – the season that the first team won the Devon Senior Cup. Here is a picture of the two teams proudly showing off their two cups.



It was the formation of the East Devon Football Association to look after football in “parts of the County of Devon, North of a line drawn from, but comprising Dartmouth, Totnes, Buckfastleigh, Torrington and Westward Ho!“ that led to the starting up of this Cup. The new EDFA was also the spur to the foundation of The Torquay and District (now South Devon) League in the same year.

Torquay United entered the EDFA Cup every year before merging with Ellacombe in 1910, but managed just one win in seven seasons. Ellacombe dumped Torquay out of the Cup twice at Plainmoor, 4-0 in 1906/07 (when Ellacombe were playing in the same league as Torquay’s reserves) and 5-2 in 1908/09 (when Torquay were playing in the same league as Ellacombe’s reserves). A case of if you can’t beat them, join them.

Babbacombe had great success in the competition, losing the final in 1908 and 1909 before winning the cup in 1910. In 1909, Babbacombe and Ellacombe met in the semi-final in front of a big crowd at Plainmoor on the same day that United were sticking 22 past Torquay Tramways in front of a small crowd in a League match at Barton Road.

This is part of the handbook for the East Devon & Victory Football League from 1932/33 that belonged to, and is signed on the cover by, Honorary Appointment Secretary, County member and Class One referee C.W. Goad.

It’s a fascinating read with all the rules, lists of members, clubs, referees etc and I will put some more of it up when I have time, but for now here is a list of the trophies played for, with the ‘Willey’ Cup (the East Devon Senior Cup Competition) being the one that Torquay Town won in 1910 and seen in the photograph Jon posted above.

CITY'S IMPRESSIVE LAST TRIBUTE
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MR. m. J. McGAHEY

Representatives of civic professional and other activities of the city were among the large attendance at the memorial service in Exeter Cathedral yesterday for Alderman Michael John McGahey, of Thrushelton, Polsloe road, Exeter for many years a leading personality in Exeter affairs and in the west country legal. Mr McGahey 71 was senior partner for Messrs Dunn and Baker solicitors. Exeter member of the city council for 35 years and a one-time Deputy Mayor. For a long period he was Chairman of Exeter Football Club.

I took a stroll up to Holmers Heath today and guess what I ended up doing? "Roy, have you got the key, pen and a piece of paper please." Surely during its infancy, this competition would have been the county's ultimate prize, I just hope that the ruunners up medal I earned, playing for Newton 66 in the 1994-5 final at the rec (2-0 up, lost 3-2, gutted,) does not undermine the achievement of others.
One other thing. Can anybody else remember SAMS F.C. The indefatigable outfit from Plimuff ?

Stefano, according to a list from a now-elderly book, the Devon Premier Cup dates from 1969/70 when the first winners were Dawlish. Upton won it in 1975 and 1977, Newton Abbot Spurs in 1985, then the trail goes cold...
