For my next Forgotten Westcountry Football Tale - don't worry there aren't too many - we move along the coast from Dartmouth to Brixham. Again I don't have much more than the bare bones. Can anyone add anything? A glance at the Brixham United page of the Football Club History Database - www.fchd.info/BRIXHAMU.HTM - shows the club spent five seasons in the Western League between 1976 and 1981. During this time they also entered the FA Vase. Given this history - and the fact that Wall Park is an enclosed non-league ground in the usual meaning of the term - it makes it even more sad that the town is currently unable to field a team above the South Devon League. I don't remember much of Brixham United's time in the Western League and I wouldn't have been much interested at the time. Perhaps, back then, it appeared a natural progression for the club. Now, thirty years on, it seems like ancient history. What was it all about? How did it go wrong? Who played for the club? How many watched the games? Although the club's record was modest (in the lower of two divisions) - never higher than 10th nor lower than 16th - some of the opponents over those five seasons were interesting: Torquay United Reserves, Yeovil Town Reserves, Bournemouth Reserves, Bath City Reserves and Chippenham Town (now Southern League). Did Brixham United actually play a league game at Dean Court during 1978/79? Was there much interest in the games against Torquay United Reserves? Here's one of the league tables from 1979/80:

I remember visiting Wall Park once or twice in the late 70's. One match was against Torquay Reserves another I think against one of the Bristol or Bath area teams - Perhaps Odd Down. The only player I can recall readily was a 'keeper - Paul McCullough was his name I think. He had as I recall been on Torquay's books as a youth team 'keeper.

If I told you that one player played for both Manchester United and Brixham United , could you guess? I'm pretty sure Dave Kennedy played for them as well.

I had a short and very painful "association" with Brixham United....................around 1969 I was playing at Wall Park in a South Devon Youth League game for my club Newtor United, the pitch was evil - a thin covering of wet mud on a frozen bed. Our team kicked off, knocking the ball to me and I slipped getting caught with a full blooded tackle from the late Wayne Drake; the next thing I knew I was laying on the ground with my knee cap round the outside of my knee and an orthopaedic nightmare and almost nine months of "rehab" ahead of me. When I later left Newton Spurs it was for Brixham United and my first game was against Argyle "A" in the P&D League in Central Park. A 1.15 kick off and a fluctuating "crowd" of some three or more thousand as the punters wended their way into Home Park for a league game with Wrexham that seemed to have a mighty attendance, a good number of whom stopped off to watch the "Stars of Tomorrow" Argyle kicked off at 3.15 in those days,so we were able to take our places in the grandstand for the "big Game" later. Just a week later I was laying in the dirt again, this time at Bude with a broken lower shin bone - I told you it was a "painful" association, and another marathon re-hab programme ahead of me. My left leg's still not straight to this day! I can remember long journies by bus from NA to train in the evenings at Brixham as I fought to comeback again and playing in the Brixham ressies in the Plymouth Combination League at some pretty grim venues. When Brixham United later went into the Western League it was on money generated by our old friend Dick Edwards who was "Player/ Commercial Manager" and they had a wicked strike partnership of the afore mentioned Paul Edwards and Wayne Drake. Dave Kennedy did play for them too as well as Andy Provan and Cliff Myers possibly, but it all came to grief as the money going out never equated to the money coming in and they resigned from the league, disbanded and had to reform in very minor football. Most of the playing side, including Edwards,Provan and Kenno went to Foxhole United where they picked up a few bob.

Great stuff, Merse. I wasn't around Torbay too much in those days so was totally unaware of the likes of Dick Edwards, Dave Kennedy and Andy Provan playing for Brixham United. Nor was I aware of your painful associations with Bude. Your Argyle "A" v Brixham United recollection reminds me of stopping to watch games like that en route to Home Park. This would have been on a pitch to the right, approaching from the city, just before the ground? You beat me to Jon's poser about Dick Edwards. I wonder if he ever played the other Wall Park venue below? Cue Dave.... www.postcardnostalgia.co.uk

Thanks bbc. I'll do my best but I'm running out of ideas so may need to recharge before thinking of fresh themes!

I spent some tie working during the holidays at Pontins in the 70's. Mainly based at Kings Ash Hill but having the odd day at Barton Hall and the Brixham Venues. I have a vague memory that Dick did play at Kings Ash - but not on a regular basis. If that were the case then he might well have played at Wall Park as well. Acts on the circuit in those days included Jimmy Cricket "....and theres more.." and Mike Read, who did a great late night cabaret routine at Kings Ash - there was always a fight amongst the bar staff to be on duty in the cocktail bar when he was on as staff were banned from attending unless working. Sporting wise Chester Barnes (table tennis) and Ray Reardon were regulars.

I started as a porter and then branched out into DJ, arcade attendant, handyman, cafe assistant, snooker room attendant and anything else I could get involved in. Absolutely loved it there and was rather saddened to come back to see houses built on it. i met great people like Ray Reardon, Jimmy Cricket but the Blue coats and other staff were the salt of the earth. i had a great time for 4 years

It was a nice camp Stuart and I went to a few events there, just think there was that one, another just a few roads up a third one by the Maldon roundabout. All gone and all houses, what ever happened to good old camp holidays.
Carol and I went to Butlins a few years ago at Minehead, we enjoyed it, but our bed was the nosiest bed I have been in, only had to just move a little bit and you would have thought by the noise, that we had ten in the bed having a mass orgy.

No never worked in any Pontins mate, mostly hotels for me, only camps I worked in was one in Kirkhampton, Mullion and one near Weymouth. Pontins was just not ready at that time for the one and only, back by popular demand Mr Davybeat.

You'd have gone down a treat Dave.
I saw Jimmy Cricket every Tuesday night for a whole season and my sides ached with laughter. what a funny guy but did not translate to the telly at all.
Ray Reardon, Steve Davis etc were good to see, even if Ray did tell me off for blinding him with flash photography!
Chester Barnes taught me to play table tennis at Brixham Table tennis club but his demos were out of this world at Pontins
So many great acts but most only did the circuit waiting for their big break.
I was on the committee of the local Labour Club for 8 years and we had many good acts. One excellent act appeared on Jonathan ross's talent show, Caroline Cooper. she was very good but was introduced by her niece, Charlotte Church. the rest is history. Charlotte made a mint, got her breasts out for the mobile phone world and married a rigby player who is more interested in his image than playing for his country. Caroline is still bitter that it was supposed to be her big break.

Well I have to agree here Stuart ;D its a shame that the likes of you never got to see my act, not being a bighead here mate, but I can play and really sing well, but as you know, I'm funny as well. I do miss it all, but make up for it everyday, by finding someone to get their knickers wet with laughter.
