Excellent postings on this thread, complete with images still and moving.
A rugby stand? That would explain a lot of things. Newton Abbot as a rugby stronghold? Well, the All Whites won at Exmouth on Saturday and that probably places them as the third strongest team in the county after Exeter and Plymouth. What with Buckland doing so well - they got a stuffing tonight, mind you - that puts things on an all-round high at the moment.
Excuse me as I disappear for a few days. Hopefully there'll be more to read when I return

There were no showers in those days just a very large square? bath that I’m sure was sunken into the ground; once again I’m sure merse will correct me if I’m wrong. I never had a problem getting into the bath with the players after the games and how times have changed as it’s something that would never be allowed to happen these days. I'm glad you'd "grown out of that" by the time I played there Dave as you'd have been around fourteen by then! ;D Yes that bath, we had a joker at the club called Stuart Shaw (one of those Geordies who came from Crook Town)who used to "play up a bit" if he got subbed and I can remember coming in at the final whistle once to finding a bite being taken out of every after match pasty, another to a certain person's trouser bottoms being cut off, shoe laces going missing and the piece de resistance; the ruddy plug being stolen from the bath! Friggin' cnut!!!!!!!!!! There WAS a dedicated player's entrance into the dressing rooms, but when I played there if you used it you would have to do battle with the stinging nettles outside and then squeeze past all the empty beer barrels and crates of old beer bottles.

Three more photos of the rec for the " old boys". I think the old grandstand can be seen in the second photo but what about the first one. Bottom left hand side , 4 rows up, and 3 in from the end. Is that Frank Harris ?

Taking a closer look at the racecourse too, one can see the new "cheap ring" stand newly constructed alongside the old (and now replaced) wooden grandstand in the Tattersall's Enclosure. There's a marvellous photograph of that old stand in Tescos accross the road from the racecourse (or at least there was the last time I was in there) taken in Edwardian times when it seems it was compulsory for everyone who attend to wear a hat!

Newton Recreation Ground was the home of rugby in Newton for well over fifty years - the Grandstand was built for rugby fans....The switch to soccer came in 1947 when the council decided to take the highest bidder for the lease and "johnny come lately" Newton Spurs had the temerity to outbid the mighty Newton Abbot RFC. This was a terrible blow to rugby in the town, but the All Whites managed to get hold of a pitch at Rackerhayes and keep going. Go to the museum in Newton Abbot and you will see a panoramic picture taken from Wolborough Hill in 1939. It shows a clear view of the Rec complete with the stand and funny posts.

This is a marvellous thread about the recreation ground in Newton Abbot. It’s just a shame that some of the images have disappeared. Jon and I were discussing this site’s reliance on links to Photobucket and similar sites the other day. We agreed it’s sadly inevitable that we’ll eventually lose images for a variety of reasons. Passage of time, accidental deletions, etc, etc. I better apologise in advance if I ever suffer such a mishap. I think all of the actual images on this thread are still intact. The "image removed" messages throughout Merse's posts would almost certainly be his trademark galloping horse icon (Rocinante?) which was probably removed when the previous owner took his ball back. I also notice references to a "image removed"ing tower. I suspect that the previous owner had a bit of code to change the word "c o o l" into a silly litle icon of a smiley face with shades on which has also now been removed. This might be something that Rob could fix when he finds the time. With Barty back in Exeter, I might take in a Newton Spurs fixture next season on a blank Saturday.

I've been lent a couple of scrapbooks and memorabilia, including programmes, match reports and photographs, by a player who turned out for Newton Spurs in the early sixties, so may scan some of it to go here if there is interest. There is way too much for one go, so it would be done over a few months...

I'm sure one or two of us would be interested in Budleigh's old Newton Abbot Spurs player of the 1960s. Meanwhile from the same period, details of the International Cavaliers v South Devon cricket match at The Rec in 1968: cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/477/477629.htmlBolus, Graveney, Hawke and Snow all turning out for the locals. I'm pretty sure they weren't Newton boys. The International Cavaliers games, many were played on Sundays, were big-time stuff between c1965-1970 and were often televised.

Thank you, Jon, for the map indicating the walk between Ivor Dewdney's Newton Abbot branch and The Rec.
Strangely enough it's a path I took only last Tuesday. There are seats along the way, next to the river, where you can rest and enjoy your pasty.
What Newton Abbot has that Exeter lacks.
The list is endless...

Barty, I came across this Photo earlier today whilst helping get the Cricket Ground ready for next week's opening league fixture and thought it may interest you! The place has certainly played host to a wide and varied selection of sporting events over the last 100 years or so thats for sure.

Fascinating stuff.

Nice one, Keyberry. Motor cycle racing eighty-odd years ago - it's amazing the range of events that have been staged at Newton Rec. Good view of the stand too.
Came across the International Cavaliers fixture by chance. Have been reading a history of Wisden and there were references to the touring professional sides of the mid 19th century prior to the establishment of the county championship. This rang a few bells about the International Cavaliers, the success of which prompted the authorities to launch the Sunday League in the late 1960s.

Interesting looking at that cricket fixture line up and blimey making me feel old as played a few times against Dave Webber, Joey Oliver and Chris Hunt. Despite being a Newton lad I didn't enjoy it at the Rec when I went as a youngster in training and went out to Bovey Tracey instead and played for them for several years. Dave Webber was my form teacher too and didn't like me not playing for them and had to laugh when Bovey took South Devons place in the Devon league. South Devon have had a horrific couple of years and are at the lowest league level they have ever been, playing league matches with sides they wouldn't even have had a sunday friendly with back in that scorecards era.

Me too...have always enjoyed playing against them, nearly signed for them once too. South Devon have certainly produced many of the counties best young players over the last few decades - Chris Hunt's son Matt had a great record as an opener for Torquay, where I played with him for many years and of course, Devon....a real old school opening bat. And...of course the man himself Joey Oliver, his presence, quick hands stood up and his complete bravery were an inspiration to me, when I played against him as a young lad - he was a great keeper.
