Still in second place after thrashing shepton mallet 5-0. An outside chance of winning the league but need to win all their games and Melksham to drop points. Still amazingly haven't drawn a league game yet !! 21 wins, 10 defeats. Well Buckland missed out .... but Truro City are promoted today to the Conference South. Hopefully we won't be starting games against Buckland and Truro in the near future as underdogs. But it's getting uncomfortably closer

Truro City are promoted today to the Conference South. A dour encounter at Truro but they were deserved winners thanks to a second-half penalty. Wet and miserable; a decent crowd of nearly 1500. A strong South Devon influence at Truro. Tully and Carlisle the management team; Les Afful played a few games for us; Ed Palmer and - I think - Rob Farkins, Craig Duff and Aaron Pugh are all South Devonians.

So we are now equidistant from Truro, as we are to Exeter. It wasn't that long ago that Truro were playing at the same level as Bovey Tracey and Stoke Gabriel and they have also suffered a relegation in that time.
Whilst that reflects well on them, it does demonstrate how desperate our situation is when we were concerned with relegation to the league Truro will now be playing in.
The beauty of the pyramid is that though I guess. In 1998 Stockport County finished 8th in the Championship - the same season Manchester City were relegated from it - and above clubs like Wolves, WBA, Norwich, Man City, QPR and Stoke. I suspect Truro were in the old South Western League, playing teams like Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, and now Stockport and Truro are playing at the same level.

I suspect Truro were in the old South Western League, playing teams like Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, and now Stockport and Truro are playing at the same level. Truro were in the South Western League in 1997/98. Champions in fact. The Devon League was operating by then so the South West League was very much a Cornish league. Fourteen clubs from west of the Tamar plus Holsworthy and Tavistock. AFC Fylde (as Kirkham and Wesham), Concord Rangers, Eastbourne Borough (as Langney Sports), Eastleigh, North Ferriby and Whitehawk are other examples of clubs which, in 1997/98, were playing at too modest a level of football to these days qualify them for the FA Trophy. As Hector says, it's the way the pyramid works. The "bigger" club slips a notch or two; the "smaller" (as has happened) rises four or five. They meet. Money is a large part of it. Somebody takes over a small club; a wodge of cash helps win promotion. And again. And again. The pyramid was established as a meritocracy; finance has helped lubricate the way it operates. Boom - and often bust - as it happens. Scan the leagues and the next group of rising clubs becomes evident. Salford City? Burgess Hill Town? Shaw Lane Aquaforce? Needham Market? Glossop North End? St Austell?? Sometimes the money will run out quickly or there'll be a change of heart. There's been a casualty recently with the bizarrely-named Celtic Nation dropping out of the Northern League. Never struck me as a well-chosen name for a Carlisle club.

Truro were in the South Western League in 1997/98. Champions in fact. The Devon League was operating by then so the South West League was very much a Cornish league. Fourteen clubs from west of the Tamar plus Holsworthy and Tavistock. Truro City were South Western League champions in 1991/92 as well, courtesy in the end of Devon and Cornwall Police! Truro started the season as favourites with a number of new signing, and were out in front until Devon and Cornwall Police visited Treyew Road about 6 games on. After Truro took the lead, the police team stormed back to win 2-1 with a brilliant header from Gerry Nardiello. Newquay then took over at the top of the table, until January when Devon and Cornwall Police visited the north coast resort. After establishing an early lead the league leaders collapsed in the wake of a Gerry Nardiello hat trick establishing a 3-1 win. Into the last weeks of the season and Bodmin Town had established a narrow lead at the top ahead of Truro City. Neither could afford to slip up, so Bodmin Town were not at all pleased when Devon and Cornwall Police turned up at Priory Park and left with a 5-3 victory, handing the title to Truro City. Truro were certainly an ambitious club even back then, but I don't think anybody would have entertained the thought that in 25 years time they would be only 2 promotions away from the Football League. However, I am not a betting man, but if I were I would wager that in another 25 years Truro will be back in the South West Peninsula League. It's a topsy turvey old game this soccer!

Clubs do tend to have these periods in history when they operate at a much higher or level than what is consider 'natural' for them.
Obviously, Bournemouth are an example, a sort of Football League version of Fleetwood Town, in that when the money runs out, they will sink back. Could Bournemouth be back in League 2 by 2020?
I remember the old Colne Dynamoes rising rapidly many years ago but then being shut down, at the folly of their owner, because of some ground-grading issues.
I would like to think Torquay are at one of their lower ebbs, rather than their 'natural' but it could be that there is worse to come yet and playing at a lower level may be coming much sooner than anticipated if we fail to convince the Conference we are roadworthy.

Must confess I half-expected Truro City to slip downwards rather than back up. They've done well.
Uncertainty about where Truro will be playing next season. The planning application to redevelop the ground for shopping will not be heard until mid-June. No other ground in Cornwall is apparently suitable for Conference football. Quoted in the West Briton the club's chairman says: "we have to make decisions about next season very soon and we could well be playing across the Tamar."
The West Briton reckons that'll be a Football League ground. That excludes Torquay United. Unless somebody's forgetting.
But we will be providing the opposition for Jake Ash's testimonial at Truro on 25 July. I'm sure I've read something, somewhere about a "developing bond" between the two clubs.
I think I'll stay east of the Tamar today. The time of the year for modest football in rural surroundings. I'll need to venture out from that comforting red dot on the map into blue bandit country. Best becoming used to that I suppose. At least it'll be Red Ruby country today.

the police team stormed back to win 2-1 with a brilliant header from Gerry Nardiello..... a Gerry Nardiello hat trick.... I had a good chat with Gerry Nardiello at a Devon Bowl final at Home Park - his son was playing. Gerry reckoned that the bloke who ran the D&CP team when he played for them - called Steve I think - was a legendary drinker.

It could easily be that we are playing at a lower level than Truro next season.

That is why the most ridiculous comments I post on forums come late at night! I could still out run or out walk (if that is all others are capable of!) everybody else in the world of my age! Now there's confidence for you! PS. Gerry was a lightweight and was only jealous!

It now seems that Buckland will apply for promotion next season if they finish in the appropriate places and have already signed a regular starter from Bridgwater. At least one football team in south devon is being run right......

At least one football team in south devon is being run right...... I thought that must mean Joe Bushin, a goalscorer, who I'm pretty certain is from Newton Abbot. But it's Andy Robertson who has experience around the Bristol and Somerset clubs at a decent level. Sounds promising. It's a shame Melksham didn't get promoted this year. With a new ground pending, they may have the ambition to block Buckland's path next year.

Sorry should have put his name for you!! Apparently based in Taunton but girlfriend from Torquay. Reading again apparently he captained them and certainly has plenty of experience playing in above leagues.
