Another disappointing result - 1 point from the last 2 games is probably a fair reflection though when we have such a porous back 5 at the moment.
We only really looked dangerous when we poured players forward in the second half as we chased the game and certainly acheived parity due to perspiration rather than inspiration - that doesn't bother me but the manner in which we exposed ourselves so often makes us easy targets for the likes of Oxford. Today will certainly not be the last result of this kind if we do not change things a bit.
The approach of knocking the ball around in triangles is really rather pretty. Sadly it is invariably suffixed with a high ball launched up to Benyon around chest height. He did his very best and of course scored twice, but it might be worth recognising that he probably isn't the most effective targetman - just an observation.
Musings on our players:
Bevan - Can't recall him doing much wrong but didn't have any save of note to make - was perhaps rather exposed for their third but seemed rooted to the spot in a neither here nor there position. Time to try Potter?
Mansell - Ran around a lot, helped link the defence with the midfield. Not bad.
Nicholson - More of the same from Saturday - poor deliveries and often skinned by his attacker. Did have a cracking effort from range though.
Ellis - Not bad and not brilliant, although part of the collective defence that will fill any opposition at this level with hope at the moment
Robertson - As above.
Lathrope - Anonymous for the most part, although didn't do much with the ball when he did get it.
Wroe - Didn't do much, not as bad as has been for much of the season (the odd game excepted). Improved in the second half.
O'Kane - A lovely touch and great vision demonstrated today, unlucky not to score from distance and demonstrated that he is easily the most creative player in the squad. If only he had more to aim at than a heavily marked solo striker. His departure was boo'd but I thought he was looking tired.
Zebs - It just didn't work for him. Tried hard but perhaps lucky not to be sent-off for kicking-out at an Oxford player just as Macklin did a couple of months ago.
Hemmings - As per Saturday - faded badly, although did have a couple of bright sparks in the first half.
Benyon - As per Saturday - he will be missed hugely if/when he goes in January (not to Southend though!) His goals were about being in the right place at the right time - we've got no-one else who thinks like he does. Did go down far too easily a couple of times.
Subs:
Stevens - Seemed to inject a bit of life into our attacks when he came-on and was involved in Kee's goal.
Kee - Nearly single handedly changed the game - provided the assist for Benyon's second and scored a (deflected goal). He added urgency to the attack instead of there just being Benyon to aim at - certainly more effective in his time on the pitch today than playing tidy little triangles has been for the last two games
Oastler - He's not a stand-out player. A bit of a "steady Eddie" and did OK when he came-on.
We continue to play in with this formation and this fashion at our peril as we slide down the table. 3 wins in the last 17 league matches (I think?) points at poor form. What I find interesting is that we won our opening 4 matches with playing two strikers, but I read (although not a quote from Buckle?) that we changed the approach as the opposition find it predictable to deal with. It's hardly been a change that has brought much benefit.
