Similarities too. The Labour Government had dragged the country to it's knees by the late 70's and a strong Conservative government took over and were rewarded with riots for trying to get the country going again. Same again. The last Labour government took over a stronger economy than ever before. Gordon Brown (who really ran everything all along with that puppet Blair as a front man) stole all the pension funds, stuffed all our gold into one of those envelopes you get through the door, brought the country to it's knees again .... before handing over to a Conservative government who will inevitably get the blame for the riots. These are nothing compared to the Gordon Riots ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Riots), when the Bank of England and Parliament were almost stormed and London was pretty much set on fire. We had a Tory PM in 1780 too...but no Labour government beforehand

Sounds like you're enjoying the show, Aus...from the comfort of 200+ miles away that is... I`m not actually, I have friends and family in London and Birmingham! What are you on about? This effects all of us, try not to be so precious! Also I hope your no where near this, it`s f**ken horrible! All I`m doing is putting up a topical thread and wondered about your stance on the political side of the issue, if I came across as being pompous and enjoying this then I whole heartedly apologise! Actually, Aussie, I'm slap bang between Brixton, Peckham and Camberwell. Had to take a longer route than normal home tonight. I don't really feel like a ruck about this right now tbh...there's enough of that going on outside

.................how absolutely bloody ironic that at this VERY moment on BBC Parliament, you know the one 'tween BBC and Sky News on Freeview, they are screening something called "The Enoch Powell Lecture" tonight - I think wherever Enoch is now, he would be having a quiet snigger at the total irony of that........................

He certainly divided public opinion and still does! Would have been a hundred next year. A very clever man that led a very interesting life and his outspoken views on racial tension and european integration are still very much topical today!

........aggro now in Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, a hugemongous fire in Enfield in a Sony Distribution Centre, and believe me it IS massive - the police rank and file are hopelessly outnumbered, well certainly from what I have seen in Smoke anyway - on what appeared to be a worrying number of cases, dare I say it, the police have definitely frozen in the headlights as it were, and there appeared to be little leadership being displayed out on the ground - if this carries on much longer, I honestly think the police service will have their powers removed and we will have a full-time martial law situation with the Army deployed - I really think drastic action like this has to be seen to be done.............
......Olympics next year, possible World Cups, they are having a giraffe aren't they?................

Mr-W I think there could well be a Human Rights issue with the use of water cannon. Should you end up with damp clothes as a result of actions by the authorities there would surely be a case to answer. That could lead to a chill..to flu, maybe worse. Should any of our London lefties be out on the street..shoulder to shoulder with the disaffected yoof could I possibly order a pair of Nike trainers size 10, from a security challenged JD Sports ?. Top of the range preferrably if there are some left, slight fire damage acceptable. I'll collect them & hand over a tenner at the Dagenham & Redbridge away game in a few weeks time...assuming you've not burnt down their grandstands by then. ..........this is how the German Old Bill sort out THEIR alleged protestor-miscreants - this geezer got more than a damp pair of kecks Joe! - be warned, its a pretty yukky pic, only for strong-ish stomachs! - seriously, water cannon will break bones and cause permanent maiming, ideal for controlling the mob, although they are difficult to use precisely and are indiscriminate in their results - bit like the Tear Gas really - now Baton Rounds and Tazers are a different kettle of fish - aimed shots and all that........ www.thethirdestate.net/2010/12/the-truth-about-water-cannons/......all a bit academic at present, as I believe that NI has the only water cannons, none on mainland - we'd have to borrow em' I think - maybe we should just turn the firemans' hoses on these feckers in the meantime - having done loads of firefighting courses when in the RN, I can vouch for how bleddy powerful a fully charged fire hose actually is - erm VERY!!!....................... ...............anyway, Kenny Dalglish in charge at Liverpool, civil unrest on the streets of the capital and a shyster Tory-led Government screwing us all good n' proper, all we need is the friggin' Specials at number 1 with "Ghost Town", a miners strike and "Boys From The Black Stuff" back on prime-time telly and we can relive the happy 80s' again..................

Can`t believe Lambeth hasn`t waded in and protested about my extreme views, should we ask the nice people that are rioting to please sit around a table and discuss this in a civilised manner? Like f**k we should! He's probably sorting himself out with a new TV and trainers ;D

Number of football matches have been called off in London this week including the England game. With some disturbances now spreading to Bristol, hopefully our weekend match won't be affected.

The enemy within crawled out from under their stone, have shown their hand and all the lowlife criminal elements are capitalising on events to settle scores and take part in a free for all of crime. Dressed in their hoody covert uniforms they are free to run riot and victimise at will it seems. Is this the real face of Britain today? What type of monster have we created/?

......possible points for grown-up debate?......
1. National Service - bring it back? - pros - gives the kids something to do, puts money in their pockets, does the nation a favour - cons - turns them into (possible) trained thugs etc........
2. The feckin' dregs who are doing this wanton destruction:
a. The rather nasty by-product consisting of the bottom of the food chain in a very successful education system that rewards hard work and study with prestige, uni placements, qualifications and a good lifestyle?...............
or
b. Essentially, what is possibly the core element of an education system that is rotten to the very bone, anyone who can't achieve is just flung onto the slagheap.......
3. Dotcom generation - they know more about fast comms tween each other than the Old Bill do now.............
4. The rolling news concept - its own worst enemy - 30 years ago, to take part in riots it was "names on a postcard" etc - very different now, switch ya widey-screen/blackberry/iphone/tablet etc on and see where its going down..............
5. Punishments from courts not severe enough? - continual passed over generations of disillusioned "Yuff" (innit)...........
6. Inner city housing - no-go areas for police? - why?..........
7. Police cutbacks?.........
8. Armed Forces cutbacks? - no chance of National Service anyway, as not enough to instruct them - all fighting wars elsewhere?................
9. The Rap/Hip-Hop music culture - incitement to violence?? - back in the day, at least the great unwashed hippy generation just sang about peace and love, s**gged each other stupid, smoked so much weed and dropped so much acid they didn't know if they were having a s**t or a haircut for the majority of the time........
10. Royalty/Republic - Prime Minister/President??........
11. Current immigration policy - you may have heard of that saying from a few years ago - Polish work for Polish workers, British work for British shirkers - ie there are people who will do a good days work for a lesser amount per hour than certain Joe Bloggses will, to put it in a nutshell (thus taking their jobs) - doesn't take an Economics/Politics genius to work that one out, thus breeds resentment and encourages the mob to trash their workplaces possibly??..........
12. Wonder if when all this is over, there will be a demographic of cultures/ages/backgrounds/sexes of all the guilty - bet not.............
.......enough to go on with there for now - anyone fancy discussing at will? - I know petef, Aussie, Barton, Jon, Phil Chelst, lambeth, rjd might!!..........
