Jon
I agree he didn't look particularly comfortable there, mind you none of our remaining 10 players looked comfortable at that stage and Pokey had to be on form. Considering how well Rochdale cut through us at times in the first half hour when we had a full complement, perhaps it had to be expected to see the same when we were a man short, but it was certainly panic stations for the last quarter of an hour.
I felt a bit sorry for Cruise as he came on to play left sided midfield on Tuesday night, and on Saturday I was asking myself 'isn't it that same bloke, but now he's a right back ?'. I suppose that Rochdale's little blonde sub Putterill also looked fairly useful, making Cruise's life all the more difficult.
I didn't have the best vantage point to view the tackle, but considering we were 4-1 up I couldn't see other than Downes would attempt a clean challenge for the ball, though he probably did catch the Cheltenham player and a penalty was rightfully awarded. If he deliberately brought his opponent down it was a bit of a daft decision and the red card was justified.
A fantastic performance as Jon says, as was Tuesday night's as well. All the more pleasing as I thought both Rochdale, and particularly Cheltenham, were decent opponents.

just to reiterate jon and alpines views on Saturday's game. first off what amazing entertainment. superb football from both sides. very little hoof ball, only when no other options. rene is already in his second season becoming a cult figure. he shows superb skills for a big lad. don't know why he sometimes gets into squabling unnecessary with the opposition. couldn't help but shout out "just walk away Rene" when he was confronting their defender. bit pathetic of me i know, but been waiting the opportunity. just slightly on the negative side, young t. cruise looks decidedly shaky. after Joe o was moved into the middle i thought the obvious switch was our reserve right back, leadbitter slotting into that position. if downes is out for only 1 game, that is a relief, but i do fear for the centre of our defence at port vale. could be the time for an experienced central defender on loan.

I see Lingy has a mention about Morris and Jarvis being not the lost popular amongst certain sections of the crowd. Personally I think Ian Morris had a pretty good game and certainly looks far more comfortable in the middle than he did out wide he also always puts in in a good shift. Ryan Jarvis came on nothing seemed to go right for him but he did at least work his socks off.
Fact is we are now spoilt by the quality of the likes of Billy Bodin and Rene Howe who are both destined to play at a higher level if they can maintain the sort of performance we all witnessed on Saturday. Defensively at the death it was a patch up job at best and Tom Cruise will be the next target if he isn't careful as he just wasn't up to speed, and didnt get tight enough to his winger when introduced. It wasn't in the least surprising that we came under so much pressure after subbing or losing our 4 best and most threatening players in Howe, Bodin, Thompson and Downes who were all quite outstanding on the day. Would love to believe that MacKenzie could do what Thompson did but It really is a different kettle of fish introducing a youngster in to central defence and believe we sitll need more experienced cover their though whether Lingy dips into the loan market for just the one match remains to be seen but for me a viable long term option is a must..

Funny enough, it wouldn't be the first time that Ling has played a youngster in central defence. It is well known that Ling gave Saah his debut at the age of 16 although I believe that was in midfield. However, during the 2005-06 season, Saah was first choice back up for the central defensive partnership and not only did well there, but helped Orient get promoted as well. He would have been 18 going onto 19. At the end of the day, Ling sees his players in training and will know if they are good enough (yet) as that is the only relevant criteria. Whether we get a loanee in or not, will speak volumes about where he thinks he is right now. Someone mentioned recently that they thought Ling rated McKenzie above Thompson (in the long term?) but after a PSF good performance from Kirtys, the manager did make a throwaway comment that maybe he thinks he should be third as opposed to fourth choice now...... EDIT: The Kirtys comment was made in the last paragraph after the Leeds game when he scored! www.torquayunited.com/news/article/just-a-few-bad-marks-276796.aspx?pageView=full#anchored

To be fair to the lad, they were already 5 down yesterday when he came on Ah, fair enough, I hadn't noticed. Obviously there are more fundamental problems there... I see another ex-loanee Tom Aldred is now on loan at Barrow
