Thanks for your thoughts there also Swanny and good to finally meet you today, despite sitting about 10 metres away from you over the last few years! ;D
I really enjoyed the game today and Accy tried to play some good football without troubling Pokey too much as opposed to his counterpart who kept the score down to respectable levels. The number of chances we created was the main positive particularly after carving out a handful of chances in some recent games. Howe was just immense again and if he scores next Saturday, will equal the TUFC record for finding the back of the net in consecutive league games. He had good support from Nathan Craig who had a hand in both goals while he was on the pitch and seems to have picked up both Eunan's position and ability to provide those all important assists.
The first couple of minutes we couldn't get near the ball but from our first attack, the cross on the left was slightly over-hit but as Craig looked to hook it back into the mix it hit their defender on the arm and to the delight of the home crowd the penalty was given. Maybe slightly harsh from that range but it stopped the cross and I have seen Manse give one of those away during his right back days! Rene is a man on form and he sent their keeper the wrong way to give us that early lead.
I thought the rest of the half was fairly even with both sides passing the ball around well but I can only remember Pokey making one save from a shot hit along the ground from well outside the area despite them having a few corners and free kicks in dangerous positions. At times, Danny, Rene and Craig and Nico combined well and I thought we looked the more likely to score. Bodin was also looking much better than of late but only threatened with a low shot from a tight angle.
At the start of the second half they had a free kick not far outside the area which was pushed wide by Poke. Not long after we had three rapid one on ones that their keeper did well to save. First Rene did well to use his strength to shrug off a defender but from within the area went for power and hit it straight at the keeper. Next, Bodin got on the end of a good pass but from a tighter angle and it was again well saved. Finally Danny was able to ghost in on a pass to the edge of the six yard box and his shot deflected off the keeper to trickle out agonizingly wide.
It happens a lot in football and after not taking our chances, they brought on a couple of substitutes that combined to score after some sloppy defending on our right wing created some space for a pin point cross to the far post for Amond to head the ball across Poke to level the game! Thankfully, as at the Aldershot game in the second half, we were able to respond almost immediately! The ball was worked out to Craig just outside the area on the right wing and his neat in-swinging cross to the far post neatly bisected the keeper and the last defender for Bodin to squeeze the ball home just inside the post with a low header to score in consecutive home games!
This goal again changed the dynamic of the match and Accrington seem to lose their shape and we were able to fashion chance after chance. The threatened goal eventually came from a Nico corner on our right that was delivered deep to Manse on the corner of the six yard box who more or less had a free header to direct it inside the post again to seal the points. Not before time, Manse was off the mark for the season, maybe coincidentally coinciding with Lathrope's return as the case may be.... Manse had a great opportunity to then double his tally after their keeper was on the ground after making another save only for him to fire over a virtually open goal from the edge of the area. The new clock minus its hands certainly took a battering in the second half!
Our home form is starting to look pretty good with us being the only unbeaten team on our own tuft in the division. Only Burton have scored more at home and that was courtesy of a 6-2 thrashing of a poor Wimbledon side. Only a point from both outside the play offs and Exeter and two points better than this time last year with us going on to lose the following three games before embarking on that marvelous run. Roll on our Westcountry rivals next week! ;D
