I dont think it's a question of the transfer fees we spend (lets face it, Bodins seems to be the only one) so much as the wage budget. A transfer fee is a one off but the wage buget is ongoing. Assuming (for example) we've had £350k in from transfer fees and the manager gets an extra 50k added to his wage budget with the rest going on paying loans etc. If he uses that 50k as the pay packet to bring someone in to bolster the squad, where will that 50k come from next season? Surely the only sensible financial option (no matter how much we laud the fact we have a youth system that is starting to produce the odd player of sufficient standard) is to use that money in January to strengthen the starting squad for the end of season push (with players of a similar ilk to Stanley and Tomlin)?

Hmm, wasn't Olejnik's fee spread over three years i.e we have only got about £100k so far? Add Eunan's fee - £175k and that's it as Ellis's fee was spent on Bodin. So £275k less 150k on training ground and another chunk on grandstand doesn't make much of a warchest..... We are still ahead on where we were last year in the league though..... As for a squad of 17, must be a couple up from that used last year! ;D I do suspect there is wriggle room in the budget but maybe best to save it for that all important run which could help us more if we get a similar situation as to last year? Ellis's fee wasn't spent on Bodin!! A very kindly lady gave us #50k towards that Completely forgot about that...

If he uses that 50k as the pay packet to bring someone in to bolster the squad, where will that 50k come from next season? Well you'd sign someone for longer than 6 months. If you'd sign someone good for a fee like that you'd lock them into a 2/2.5 year deal, as with Bodin, so that you've got them for a while or that anyone else would have to pay a fee for them. Providing you sign the right player, you shouldn't need to have to spend the extra money again You'd then free up some of the wage budget by getting rid of some of the deadwood in the summer. The core of the side can stay the same while adding to the depth Equally, while last year was a bumper year for selling players, the likelihood is always there of selling a player onto a bigger club for a decent fee. Howe, Craig, Bodin and perhaps even Downes might make us quite a bit of money in the near future providing we can prevent them from leaving on Bosmans Also building a squad on loanees isn't such a bad idea. Though in the past I've been against building a squad largely around loan players as Buckle used to do, it does help add to a squad if you can get good players on loan for nothing, especially if you get in early While I'm sure Alpine Joe has a point when he talks about players not wanting to come here because of X, Y and Z, I've always felt that that, at least in part, was a bit of an excuse - players will go to a strong club and won't go to a weak club. We've attracted plenty of good loanees before so the idea that we shouldn't bother looking for loanees because none of them will come here is short-sighted and defeatist - the classic Torquay United inferiority complex

Yeah, I knew that, but I think I see what you mean now - an extra £50k on top of what we would normally have for a temporary period?
