Over the course of the day I've gradually written this reappraisal of Leroy's reign: welshgull.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/leroy-rosenior-the-manager/The problem I feel is that while he is well-regarded, there are a couple of niggling criticisms of his management skills, which I think is unfair. Only now is the scale of the job he did actually become apparent - it was quite an incredible feat to first get us promoted and then secondly nearly keep us up, considering the budgetary restrictions he had in place Yes, he made some bad signings, but given that he had so little to work with, and that it slowly became necessary to sign players via trial and error because of that, it's inevitable that that was going to happen. What should instead be said is that he unearthed a few gems - Kuffour, Akinfenwa and Connell have all gone on to become established lower league strikers, Sako went on to play for St Pauli and Arminia Bielefeld in Germany, and some of the loanees we had in have gone on to greater things or are at least still plying their trade in the FL, like Paul Robinson, Mike Williamson (well, we knew him anyway), Craig Woodman, Adam Lockwood and his son Quite why he hasn't had more jobs in recent years I don't know - the punditry must be paying well, and if it keeps Claridge off the Football League Show I'm fully in support of this

the other half and myself keep in touch with leroy every now and then,a manager as you rightly say produced wonders in his reign with us,and was very very unlucky we got relegated first season in league one,he holds absolutely no malice and he has a nice career in the media to boot now.He is excellent as a football pundit, makes claridge look a complete twerp, and remains a legend at plainmoor.

I imagine his disastrous reign at Brentford probably has more to do with why he doesn't get any jobs these days than anything that happened at Torquay. Although as you say the punditry must be paying well as I'm sure some League 2 club would take him on given the chance.

Always had the utmost respect for Leroy.
He did a fantastic job in our automatic promotion and as has already been said we were so unlucky to come back straight away. Should have been an investigation into Tranmere putting out a weakened team for such an important game.
Love him on the Football League show, and to be quite honest he is a great deal better than those on MOTD!

Yes, i shall never forget that afternoon at Southend, especially at around five past five when Leroy took the microphone and came over and spoke to the celebrating Torquay fans in the away end. Brings a lump to my throat............

A nice tribute to Leroy there, James, but Steve Claridge and Emile Heskey are easy targets, don't you think? Claridge is no more annoying than Leroy in my opinion while Heskey, in the mood and especially in his youth at Leicester, was a fine player who is unfairly ridiculed almost as a matter of course.
Emile has become one of those players who everyone is supposed to think was shit but I preferred him to the nasty Suarez, diving Nani, mardy Tevez, racist Terry and mercenary Arshavin any damn day.

I don't have a personal grudge against Heskey and I think a lot of the ridicule goes too far (and I'm not convinced he'd get as much stick if he was white). He's doing quite well out in Australia at the moment. However, on this particular occasion, he was absolutely dreadful. I always grew up regarding him as a good player until I saw him live - it was a perception-changer
Claridge is a useless pundit who blags his way through the FLS providing no actual analysis at all, but he has also said some rather nasty snobbish things about Torquay in the past. I'm not joking when I say there are usually plenty of sighs of relief when Leroy is on, as Twitter on a Saturday night demonstrates

In my old-fart's opinion jumping on bandwagons like "We hate Steve Claridge" is about all Twitter is good for, but moving on.....
It's a funny thing about big bustling centre-forwards; when they are good they are very very good but when they are bad they stink. Obviously Emile Heskey must have been bad at Plainmoor but when I saw him at Saltergate he was great. John Ritchie has god-like status at Stoke but on the one occasion I saw him play for them he could barely stand up. I also saw Cyrille Regis play twice for West Brom; first time he was unstoppable but second time a waste of space.
