agree with your point bout mansell, should of had that desire on the pitch, but come on guys, are we having a bad season NO...do we have more points in the league than this time last season YES...and what happened we made the playoffs,so we had an off day today...cant wait to read your posts when we get promoted.....so lighten up guys thats why we love our beloved gulls so much...simon I think the point is more that 1) this isn't the first dreadful performance this season and 2) it's not like Ling can drop many players to kick some of these guys up the arse for this because he doesn't have the options to do so - why should the players bother when they know that even if they play badly they're not going to lose their spot in the team, especially when if they win, they may not be guaranteed their places? Either way, it's rather pathetic. Bar the small number of "get a sense of perspective" comments (valid but missing the point that it's been a consistent thing), the vast majority of posts here and elsewhere have basically said that this was atrocious. Considering Ling said earlier this week about needing a cup run, and then seemingly defending the players when they didn't do what he expected of them, this is an absolute mess - a first team that can only lift itself against strong opposition, several players consistently under-performing, no money to improve it thanks to the cup exits, and a manager who doesn't seem to have a grip on what's going on. If we didn't have the league position for people to use to defend the club with (and I think we're fortunate to be in the position we're in, judging by what I've read here lately), Ling would be under serious pressure right now Credit to Harrogate and all that but it sounds as if it was more using losing rather than them winning. I know that's what happens with most giant-killings to an extent, but the fact that this isn't the first time I'm seeing comments like "this is the worst performance for years" (and whether or not that's true is besides the point) suggests this isn't just because it was the FA Cup - we're genuinely not playing well and I'm getting concerned

To be honest Ling is saying the same week in week out now. We didnt play well,. supporters have a right to moan etc. Today will hit us so hard money wise. I doubt their will be a lot of cash to play with even loan wise. It could do with a couple of loans to freshen it up. I think we will have a season of mixed results and finish around mid table. If Howe leaves then it will be lower. We do well on the money and resources we have at Torquay. I want Torquay to be top 3 and go up but to be honest its not going to happen at the moment. We have good players at this club but we lack width, Stevens, Macklin and Bodin are far short of been the answer. I do like the look of Thompson, a dam sight better more exciting to watch than the three mentioned. I like Craig in the middle and not out wide. Barnet away Tues, it will either be a scrappy win for us I think or a complete bore draw.

yes credit to harrogate, but as for GET SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE COMMENTS,yes have read the posts fully,so we are not playing well and we are 7th in the league not bad for a team not playing well, and as for your concerns james about us,if we were bottom of the league then we would have concerns.

Nope, we are not in a false position, had a tough start together with a number of injuries and actually have slowly improved to our highest placing of the season yet. The consistency issue now seems to be mainly confined to home versus away and obviously there is improvement to be had there. I think today was just one of those things that happen regularly in the cup with the underdogs having nothing to lose leaving all the pressure on one team. If we had taken a couple of those clear cut chances then it would have been job done against a plucky little team and the outlook would have been totally different on here. As it is, it is hard to take but we move on and the only focus now is the league starting with two tough away fixtures.

I get paid the last Wednesday in every month and I knew on my last pay day, that I had to make my wages last five weeks in October until my next pay day. I did ever so well, so well I knew for the first time for such a long time I could afford to get along to Plainmoor and show my support.
That was until Friday night when shock horror the shopping bill came £15 over budget. Lyn said I should still go and she knows I have missed so much about being at Plainmoor. I decided that as the money earmarked for the game had been used for the shopping, I would not go in the end and see how the money works out during November.
So here I sit at my PC knowing I have £15 worth more food etc in the house and I also watched a cracking game of football. Not a bad feeling at all and it’s a far better feeling than if I had of gone to watch Torquay United play today.
Today’s result is an embarrassment and a disgrace and the club, the manager, the players have no worthwhile excuse they could offer to those who did make the effort to go today. We are meant to be a professional football team and we can’t even beat a bunch of part-timers who had to play in a long and draining game on Wednesday and were still good enough to beat us.
Why was the gate so low today? Is it because it’s getting near to Christmas? Or due to the gas and electric going up and the fact we have had to put the heating on early, people do not have the money to spend on football?
Or is there another reason? I have read report after report where it was clear many thought the game they had watched was very poor. Even worse lacked any entertainment factor, sure there has been the odd good performance and surprise result, but have they just covered up the fact we have a much weaker team than we did last season.
Its back to that product thing, you know the one you are being asked to pay a minimum of £17 for and getting so little back for your money. You made the effort to get to Plainmoor didn’t you? What team out on the pitch made that extra bit of effort that was enough to win the match? The part timers or the ones your £17 went towards paying their wages.
Our league position may very well turn out to be a false one; it will only take a run of poor results to see us struggling at the wrong end of the table. Would we be good enough then to avoid the drop? Not on the evidence I’m seeing.
We sold our best players and did not invest the money back into the playing squad, we are spreading what money is coming in far too thinly and not enough is being spent on the first team. Its crazy being in a situation where the team picks itself due to the size of the squad and the fact we only have so many good players.
Days like today can become nails in the coffins of football clubs and don’t you believe otherwise. The chance has gone to get a big payday and a good number of fans were send home pissed off with what they saw. Don’t kid yourself; some of those won’t be coming back for the next home game or the one after that.
What went wrong today? Did our players just turn up thinking they had won the game already as they were only playing part-timers? Did they turn up not caring about the shirt they were wearing on their back and what that shirt means to all the fans of the club?
I’m not looking forward to going to work on Monday, I know the jokes will come and I will be told I support a joke club that could not even beat a bunch of part-timers. Do not expect me Torquay United to feel proud about my club right now, you do not deserve that you sure are not going to get it.
We need some fresh blood; we need to be able to give the manager more options, we need a manager who can get far more out the players he has at his disposal. We need far more paying customers, but to get them and keep them you need to give them so much more than is on offer right now.
What we really need is a bloody miracle or Chris Fleet to go and hypnotises the whole bloody lot of them so they can come out for the next game with the right winning mentality.

Actually Dave, things have been pretty good at home, plenty of goals and excitement where we are the only team in our division to be unbeaten on their own turf in the league. I think disgrace is a little strong to use as a term although the finishing was diabolical today and ultimately proved our undoing. Ling did say before the game that there would be no excuses and without a doubt, it was a very bad day at the office. I think it is a little premature to talk about a relegation battle for a team that has just taken 12 points from 6 games in October including outplaying and beating the runaway league leaders.
On our day, we can beat anyone in league 2. Crisis? What Crisis?

i didnt like what i saw today, bodin shocking, stevens awful, craig non existent, nicholson inept, lathrope did he play? the list goes on and on,rob it was a disgrace sorry to disagree with you.It just tells me we will have another season of what might be,followed by inept performance when it really matters.I reckon howe will get fed up with it all and move on soon, playing the lone ranger must get to him.Well at least now lingy will have to show what he is made of,its very easy to manage a winning team, lets see if he can cut the mustard in a major blip

Must admit i didnt see that result coming, but its the fa cup and being a Torquay fan, occasionally you just have to accept a bloody horrible day like yesterday ! Harrogate defended well and sensibly and to me we never really looked like scoring in that second half. Walking back to the car in the rain and seeing the club chuck 18 grand down the drain........not happy! A win at Barnet would certainly take the edge off it surely, maybe, hopefully?

The last three or four seasons and more have been successful and the football entertaining with the club riding on the wave of on field success. We now have a great stand and most of the infrastructure for sustainability has been put into place. This has been possible by good management and the fact that we have not been involved in any relegation struggle. If we had been I am pretty sure things would have been put on hold. So for me its the first team, the style of football and promise of some success that feeds and maintains interest in everything Plainmoor. If we start to take that for granted a slide will begin and that is my fear. Supporters pay good money to be entertained and managers need to keep the "pot boiling". When Lingy arrived expectations were low and he managed to bring in two or three players that lifted the squad and supporters he also inherited a quality midfielder that made us tick. Our "unexpected" success last season was due to a number of factors one of the main ones was nobody expected it and the psychological pressure was off the players, they could play freely and we had players in Eunan and Bobby O that more than once kept us in games and kept the managers and the club "pot boiling". Its inevitable that if you lose quality players and replace them with adequate players your going to have problems. Bodin was always going to be a bit of a gamble and maybe the expectation levels were raise to high when most were saying that the squad was stronger this season. The sudden lack of atmosphere in the ground has surprised and shocked me of late. The Pop side is sparse and empty the family stand bare. Thank God we didn't build or develop bigger and can imagine how it must have felt at Darlington a few seasons back. Crowds are of similar size and more or less what we would expect I suppose but there was a better atmosphere for the players last season with just three sides open and that's something I doubt any of us expected. New stands improved youth set up and huge investment in training facilities will take time to bear fruit , we all know that but its fundamentally important that we also do not take our eye off the ball and fail to invest and scrimp on the quality of the first team squad because if we do all the stand building, trainng grounds etc etc it could all be for nothing.

i still think imho that the popsiders be given the opportunity to move into the away end,in the current climate and apart from local derbies its nearly always empty anyhow. It looks awful during the game, not a soul behiond the goal.Bristows bench seems to be a success, but at what cost, the ground now looks barte and starting to become devoid of atmosphere, mix that in with the way we play at present and its a problem. Saying that, the club overall have made big strides on and off the pitch, but quite rightly petef as you say we cannot take our eye off the ball in every sense, particularly on the pitch,or i fear we will go back yonder to the bsp,we cannot keep flogging our best assets and replacing them with an inferior product,we had years and years of that under bateson
