James, to be fair to Ling, he did say that no one could complain if they were dropped after Southend but he can't drop them all and still has to pick a team that he thinks can win taking into consideration tactical aspects of the match up and three changes were made. Fans just want him to pick a team that will win which is what he did today! I'm not sure that your criticism is entirely justified..... There's a difference between "not being able to drop everyone" and "dropping 2 players, 1 of which due to a return from injury", though That's the reality of the situation - we lost 4-1, were utterly appalling generally, and he's effectively dropped 1 player. Not to mention the fact that this 1 player has been one of our best players this season This is why I can't take Ling seriously any more - he criticises the players no end if they lose but never drops them. That's not "honesty". That's anything but - it's spinelessness. I can't support such decision-making, as a matter of principle. So I'm not going to post on football mattersWhat a great weekend....3 fantastic away points and less dross to read from now on!!!.........Unbelievable comments made today and totally ridiculous...what a great weekend

Still say we are a Benyon type striker short of a full squad, but hats off to Lingy after the Southend game (which must have been one of the worst games I've seen in a long while - missed the Cup game) to turn the team 'round - very important game.

Love him or Hate him, James has always attracted a lot of votes and possible was the first member on here to predict the downturn at the end of last season after being very positive prior to that. Hopefully he will be back!

Hopefully he will be back! Yes hope he comes back to post again as a football forum is not something to get wound up about. He writes well and puts forward some good points. Everybody should be free to express their view (within of course the limits of the law) but there is nothing important enough on a football forum to get upset about. Losing both legs at the age of 20 in Afghanistan is important, but whether we played 4-2-3-1 or 5-3-1-1 or even Stewart's 2-3-5 is not something to get distressed about (all means nothing to me mind as as I have pointed out on another forum I am systems dyslexic!). Mind you James is lucky we are living in the 21st Century. In less enlightened times his prediction that Torquay United would fall away at the end of last season resulting in ... Torquay United falling away at the end of the season, would have seen him burned at the stake!

Torquay United falling away at the end of the season, would have seen him burned at the stake! Never a truer word spoken Stefano. It all a matter of having a sense of proportion. Its not a war were fighting, its not a matter of life or death its just a bloody game and outside of this tiny percentage of people, who pay to watch compared to those who couldnt care less in and around the bay nobody and I mean nobody gives a toss what happens to little old TUFC. Sad to say I know many people who know nothing about the tragedies that unfold every day around the world and are just wrapped up in their own little world. Emotional protection perhaps but believe it does you good sometimes to read the world news to get back that sense of proportion. James unfortunately has lost his, for the moment any way and despite being a more controversial poster he is only stating what many of us are thinking, nothing else and his fear is as mine that we may take our eye off the ball and slip into real trouble.

I don't think there is any need to worry, Pete. On Saturday Torquay turned in a very professional performance and were too good for York, who failed to trouble the hardworking Gulls and whose display indicated that there is at least one team in the division considerably inferior to TUFC.
I have seen the team play three times so far this season and on every occasion have been impressed by the Poke/Downes/Saah triumvirate. On Saturday it was pleasing to see Rene Howe have some help up front and the full backs were always ready to run up the flanks. The fact that Nicholson passed the ball to Stevens for the first goal while Oastler scored the second illustrates that defenders are given licence to attack.
More good news: Billy Bodin had a fine game. He seemed to lack confidence at first but once Torquay took control he was always dangerous, took defenders on whenever he could and it was his lovely ball to Howe, and Rene's strength, which created the second goal.
To summarise then: Crisis? What crisis?

I would like to echo what some of the above posters say (in particular Stefano - life's too short and to be honest, as much as we love the club, it is little more than 22 men kicking a ball around a pitch!).
No doubt the supportive / critical stances towards Ling and the club are heard over a pre or post match pint and without any upset. Forums are a fascinating place to explore at times but of course when it comes to sharing opposing views there isn't a function for a raised eyebrow or facial expression and perhaps the spirit of of the debate doesn't work in the same way that it would if it was in a pub or on the terrace.
I have at times witnessed 'fall-outs' on TUFC forums since I strayed using them back in 1977 and usually they are due to the personalities involved. I don't think that there is even a drastic polarity in either the personalities or the actual views expressed in this spat. No doubt as time goes-on these things are forgotten about and I think that it is a shame to lose regular contributors to a site whether I agree with what they are saying or not.

Will miss JamesB`s postings as he writes some good stuff that is outside of the usual non controversial stuff. Was interested in this game as I mentioned previously it might be beneficial for Mansell and Nicho to move on, or certainly not be in the team. Nice to see a winning result without Manse there. This shows we are not over reliant on him, hope others will take note. If results continue without Manse, it may give way to another player moving in and thus altering the way we play. We will never know until it is tried.

What prompted me to post after I read James b's rant and also the reactions that followed was this article on the BBC news site www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20466027 . So to James and anyone else who thinks the end of the world is coming after we lose a few games of football you really should read this. For this family their world really has come to and end . I implore you to read it..

Two away games for me so far - four points and two clean sheets.
My York-supporting friends reckoned they had been well and truly done over by a very well-organised and well-disciplined opponent.
Hats off to every player for a sound performance - but especially to Downes and Saah who were solid as a rock.
Switch off now Stefano, but I love rabbiting on about formations. As much as I find them fascinating, I do think sometimes people lay to much emphasis on how they affect things. We were on our toes, lively and "at it" on Saturday - which we were not against Harrogate and Southend.
Having said that, there is a thin line between success and failure and if all the luck had run against us we could still have lost the game.
I was very pleased to see Stevens in for Mansell as I do think we need two quick attacking options either side of Howe. I was expecting Craig to move in to a middle three, but was surprised to hear Jarvis was in for Lathrope. I thought Ling would play Easton and Lathrope. Even if he didn't, I would have kept Lathrope over Easton and maybe tried Yeoman instead of Jarvis. But Lingy knows a hell of a lot more about it than I do!
To be honest, although the players picked made it look more of a 4-2-4, when we needed to defend Howe was still left on his own up top. To my mind that makes sense. Bodies behind the ball when defending and breaking forward in numbers when attacking.
Although the formation could still end up a 4-5-1 when needed, there was a different emphasis to how we have been setting up. We have been more of a 4-1-4-1 or a 4-1-2-2-1. This was more of a 4-2-3-1. Rather than Lathrope behind two, it was Jarvis in front of two.
This placed more defensive responsibilities on Easton and Craig and both responded well to it. Both have looked a bit lost to my eyes when we had Mansell and Lathrope in with them - not too sure what they were supposed to be doing. They knew what they had to do on Saturday and did it well.
Credit too to the wide men. I have always liked Stevens - even if it means disagreeing with our regular away match summariser. He's got great technique, good vision and he is also very disciplined, intelligent and works like a trojan. What is not to like?
It just will not fall for Bodin in terms of pulling the trigger, but I can tell you it definitely is not for lack of effort. He was involved in both the goals. Well worth his place and you get the feeling that once he finds the net, he might start doing it regularly.
So on the one performance, a team with a great chance of promotion. Do I think we will go up? No. I do not think we have the strength in depth, but rather than berating the manager or the board for that I will reflect that it was forever thus.
Older reader will remember the Biblical parable of the young antique-clock-dealer-to-be, the scrap book and the big red felt tip pen.
