Another Saturday, another match.....
It was going to be Hyde v Woking but the 1pm pitch inspection dissuaded me. As it happened, it got played and ended 7-0. I briefly considered Sheffield United v Port Vale in the FA Cup: just a tenner to get in. Momentarily too, Rotherham v Notts County.
Then I came up with North Ferriby United v Hednesford. First v second. Checked the home club's twitter: GAME ON after an early inspection. Train to Donny, change for Ferriby. Two or three stops after Goole; a couple before Hull.
I knew a little about North Ferriby United: up and coming; off to a strong start this year; former FA Vase opponents of Taunton Town (Ian Bastow's finest hour apparently). Yet I knew nothing of the place. I was anticipating Hull overspill but couldn't have been more wrong. Neat prosperous suburbia with a number of fine old buildings and a few interesting nooks and crannies. Were it not for the Hull white telephone boxes, North Ferriby could sit neatly up a Hampshire creek or on the Exe estuary between Topsham and Lympstone. Quite a surprise.
The game was a belter: step 3 non-league football at its' best watched by a crowd of around 400. No score in the first half; a goal from each side in the first few minutes of the second. A second for North Ferriby; I fancied them to hang on. Then a second penalty for Hednesford - this one rather more contentious - followed by an 89th minute winner for the visitors. Final score: 2-3.
A contrast between the two clubs: a slightly twee suburban village (unless I missed something beyond the old main road) and a more established club from a former mining community: Villagers v Pitmen indeed. The away supporters were by far the earthier.
Time, of course, for some pictures. The grounds, I fear, are starting to appear similar. North Ferriby's is neat and tidy like the village itself with the Anne Turner memorial allotments behind one goal and the splendid vista of the parish church. And, of course, the looming presence of the Humber Bridge:
