I was always brought up to aim for the stars, because if you fall you'll at least hit something half-decent, whereas if you aimed lower and fell, you could end up with sod all That's one of those ridiculous ham philosophies that get parroted even though they are complete and utter b*llocks. Darlington aimed for the Premier League and ended up groundsharing at Bishop Auckland in the Northern League. If you set ridiculous and unachievable goals, you don't automatically get handed a sexy consolation prize when you fail. You just buggar up your chances of actually achieving a sensible target. Have a look at this link for an example of someone who has looked at the resources avalable, set very challenging but achievable goals and delivered the goods. Dave Webb managed your club when Maggie was Prime Minister The first draft of the Official Centenary History, fortunately canned before it hit the printers, portrayed an even bleaker situation. Maggie as Prime Minister, Dave Webb as manager of TUFC and Jim Davidson on the board of directors. Didn't George Orwell predict something like that 36 years earlier? |

Set goals high and you WILL achieve more. There is a difference between setting high but attainable challenges and having ridiculous pipe dreams. The vision set out by Simon Baker is the former. Pipe dreams are for dreamers not for doers. Forums attract more of the former than the latter. |

And that's a potential question to be asked in the context of Wildebeeste viewing us from North Derbyshire for all those years. Would Torquay United leaving the league ever have been a surprise to him? Maybe not. "As others see us" and all that business..... I'm sorry to say that most people, football fans or not, in the North didn't even notice when Torquay United dropped out of the League, nor when they came back again. It wasn't mentioned on Look North after all. In my Chesterfield-supporting years I considered TUFC to be a classic Fourth Division club who might have an occasional holiday in the Third but were more likely to be found in the bottom third of the bottom division. With typical arrogance I also considered it perfectly acceptable for my team to treat clubs like Torquay as nurseries and to pinch their best players whenever we felt like it. Reading Left Foot in the Grave just re-inforced the "little Torquay" image, I'm afraid. The first time I ever saw Torquay United as anything other than a middle class club who were not all that bothered whether they succeeded or not was when live TV showed that win against Yeovil. The Yellow Army were giving it large and I thought "Hang on, this is a different beast altogether". And from that initial spark true love has grown.  |

I was in the pop that day but that match made a very big impression on my 4 year old son watching at home. |

Half time was livened up with the Berlin Gulls making an appearance and after the cross bar challenge winner was unable to hit the bar went head to head with them for two free tickets to the next match. J shall tell you why i trust in Ling, despite having a mid table budget at his disposal we could have gone up automatically on the last day last season let alone the play offs ! I dont think he is letting anyone down unless you seriously think he has more funds at his disposal. Theres nothing wrong with our back five inc cover from Leadbitter and Mcdonald. Im not quite sure how anyone cannot be impressed by Rene Howe another Ling signing. We obviously miss Eunan and there seems to be . 3 or 4 others who certainly devide opinion at the moment.
