Exeter City certainly got good value out of that programme cover because they used it year after year after year. And, at the risk of sounding like a hopeless nostalgic, there were plenty of other clubs which stuck to a tried and trusted - yet distinctive - programme formula for several seasons on the trot. I can, for instance, picture Chesterfield's cover design from the 1960s. And is it my imagination that Chester briefly used the same design? Maybe the two clubs had a special deal with the printers. Besides wasn't Chester v Chesterfield a local derby anyway?

Exeter also drew heavily on the services of Maurice Golesworthy over many years. He was a chap from Kenn who turned out encyclopaedias for all manner of sports and would have been known by some for his "Westcountry Notes" in Soccer Star.

I don't remember that Austrian cafe on North Street but, when I last looked, McGahey the tobacconist was still going strong and has now diversified in to selling rather nice coffee.

Actually I first read that as the Australian Cafe. I wonder what one of those would have been like in 1960s Exeter? Or, indeed, 1960s Australia?
