an excellent result against 14 man chesterfield,i have never seen such a one sided ref and officials as bad and incompetent as these clueless bunch.Amazed we had nobody sent off having booked half our team and just lectured the chesterfield divers. We thoroughly deserved this result and should of been way out of sight by half time. The sitting back habit returned for the second half, which makes us unattractive to watch and a slightly dangerous tactic, but in the two new recruits we have a bit of quality, pokey made a couple of outstanding saves, jarvis worked his socks off and howe looked more his old self and amazingly wasnt one of them booked. But no complacency,we arent safe and have a lot of hard work to do,york saturday is a massive game

I almost missed kick off with quite a large queue into the family stand one entrance while the other three Bristow Bench turnstiles were empty. Still, just about sat down when the ball was kicked off and just as well really. After gaining possession in the centre the ball was fed to Cruise on the left who stepped nicely inside to beat his man and run down the wing. He then fed it wide to Chappell and carried on running down and was able to run nicely onto his pass near the corner. His cross to the edge of the six yard box was inch perfect for Labadie to head into the far corner for an amazing start. Too often, I have seen the keeper pull off brilliant saves in recent weeks so also a bit of a relief as Labadie knocked in his third goal in three games!
We continued to press and won a corner. It was actually very poorly taken and was headed out but Chapelle running in was able to take a shot from outside the area which took a deflection off Howe - not sure how much he knew about it but hey that happened to us recently so you always take them! We actually had a chance for a third shortly after when Chapelle? was put through but his shot went to the right of the post. After this good start it was imperative that we held the cushion into the second half and we restricted them to two decent chances. The first was from a free kick just outside the area slightly to their right. It actually followed a free kick from the half way line and Saah was adjudged to have thrown their player to the ground while both going for the ball but the fall felt theatrical to me and the lino watching on did not flag anything. The free kick was well taken but like Bodin's free kick a few weeks ago, was in the centre of the goal allowing Poke to tip over but still a good save nevertheless.
Saah didn't seem to get a good deal with the referee and when very harshly judged to have committed a foul, a bit of handbags followed over the ball and IMO he over-reacted by awarding a couple of yellow cards early on. We didn't seem to get the rub of the green over 50/50 challenges and Benyon and Labadie also got yellows for not particularly bad challenges or indeed persistent offences when Chesterfield seemed to be getting away with similar and maybe the difference was a few simulations before getting up and playing on as normal!!!- it certainly was getting on the crowd's wick and they let the ref know what they thought at the half time interval.
The second good chance they had was when they got the ball away on their left wing and the cross caused all sort of trouble and how they didn't score from an open goal I don't know, with the ball ricocheting off their own player??? and away to safety.
Although we were slightly more defensive in the second half, we had some very good chances and had the ball in the back of the net twice but were thwarted by a number of seemingly bizarre flaggings by the popside lino and would be interested to hear from those members standing more in line. In one instant, a through ball to Rene just over the half way line was flagged right in front of the Torquay dug out to the disgust of the management team with Veysey holding his arms out wide to indicate how much he was on-side by. Anyway, the first off side goal might actually have been off side but was well worked by Rene for Manse to run onto and slide past their keeper. However, this had followed a couple of more good moves where I was really scratching my head how they were off and you just felt some poor judgement was going on - bring back Sian Massey - much better than most I've seen!
The second off side goal was much later in the match from a lovely strike into the top left hand corner by Rene but please, please can anyone tell me why that was off! This was after Chesterfield had scored when MacDonald had given away a free kick when chesting a ball down which had a hint of partially hitting his arm which was by his side but a hopeful appeal by the Chesterfield fans was heard by the other lino who flagged. A good free kick was delivered into the box and seemed to be tamely allowed to be headed in but wrong end for me I'm afraid!
So suddenly, after being relatively comfortable, it became a rather nervy finish and despite an awful lot of injury time, we managed to hold out and may even have scored with Saah just not connecting on a clever dinked Manse free kick (why could not Rene have been there) and substitute Craig smashed a ball just wide but a certain goal if on the goal side of the post!
Our recovery seems to be gathering pace which is just as well because all the other teams down there seem to be winning but the extra quality of Chapelle and Labadie coupled with Cruise coming in and doing a good job has revitalised the side and giving us the confidence to continue to battle our way to safety!

A good battling performance which shows what can be achieved when you attack and put the opposition under pressure from the start. Hard to fault anyone in the team for the effort put in tonight. I was a bit skeptical about Cruise's ability to compete in L2 matches but he was excellent tonight and fully deserves his starting slot. Laddo and Manse were massive in midfield which resulted in Chesterfield going long ball most of the time. We could have had several more goals but for being slightly wide with a few shots and several really poor offside calls from the popside lino (not to be confused with the few he called rightly and still got abuse from most of the ground). As for the ref, some shocking free kick decisions and yellow cards. edit Was it THIS chump tonight?? It’s the second time Mr Atwell has refereed at Plainmoor this season and yet another display of poor management, showmanship, and over involvement in a game that was not that tricky to take charge of at all. His general decision making was not in my opinion very good but he was just far too apparent. The old adage ‘you never notice a good referee’ sits comfortably with me but it was no coincidence that he positioned himself as close as possible to frustrated supporters on several occasions in the second half; once running parallel with the pop-side within touching distance of his assistant, but why? 5 minutes injury time - where did that come from, so let’s play 6. After the Final whistle is finally blown, stay on the pitch as long as possible to milk criticism from fans of the winning team when walking off. I can accept marginal calls sometimes being made incorrectly, but not mannerisms. To rub salt into the wound I’ve just had a look at the appointments for the weekend and unfortunately it’s the turn of another former top flight referee to try and be the star of the show. Roger East!!
Another 2 - 1 victory and I wouldn't give a to$$ who the ref was. More pleasing is that if we can show the same commitment as we did tonight we have every chance of bagging 3 more vital points.

the way all at the foot of the league are picking up wins here and there, the usual 50 points for safety might need hiring a point or two this season,51 may even spell relegation for someone yet

I agree. 52 points may well be needed.

I can say with absolute certainty from my position on the Bench that the flagging for offsides was wrong on at least three occasions. It never even entered my head that Renes disallowed goal would be flagged. I was in line and he was at least a yard ON. That linesman was absolutely awful and we won DESPITE the officials. I even waited for the linesman to come off the pitch at the end to have a good shout at him which made me feel better. A good battling performance, much more like it. Thought Cruise had a good game as well.

Agree with the revised points total for safety. Unleass say Aldershot and York slip away from the pack, its going to be low 50`s. Everybody seems to be in form except us. Hopefully Knill has turned it around, but only the next 3-4 games will tell. Remember when we were relegated from L1 with 51 points on goal difference I think. Might work in our favour this time. Still hard to see where we will get 10 points from. I have always thought that the more stick refs and linos get, the less chance we have of a fair and impartial performance from them. The description of the refs behaviour last night does not surprise me. I have always thought the Torquay crowd have been too vocally critical to get fair judgements. In the premiership the officials could not do this as there is too much pressure on them (replays etc and the fact they probably would`nt make it home!) But who cares if a struggling L2 team gets poor decisions. Ferguson should have a dose of L2 offials before he retires!! Anyway, come Saturday I will make myself as busy as possible in an attempt to not have a complete breakdown. Well done Mr Knill and good luck.

could be 52 points needed, one of the eventually relegated probably wont reach that but the second team could well drop into the bsp on 51,so 3 wins for us might do it,still a tall order, and by no means are we out of the woods yet.Lots of twists and turns to go yet, even up to rochdale arent safe, somebody might decide to join the party and hit crap form. And as lambrettagull rightly says 51 points saw us dip very unfortunately out of league one,so no time for complacency, its results now,not performances that count but getting both in one game really is a bonus. And i can safely say without knilly getting the two quality loanees in we would of definitely had it.On the subject of loanees we are allegedly in talks with liverpool regarding a striker joining us,obviuosly not one of the first teamers but nonetheless a striker, subject to contract agreement, lets wait and see

Had a gut feeling some time a go that 50 points may not be enough to survive. That vital win last night was so very important if we had lost we would have been cut adrift in the bottom two still searching for a win and three points. No time for any complacency just look at Wimbledon who must have thought they were safely easing their way out of it after as run of huge wins are suddenly back in the mire after a big defeat at fellow strugglers Accy.
Saturday will be another nerve wracking experience and another game we must win to keep the ball rolling and push York further into the mire. They will be thinking exactly the same and be as dangerous as any opponent . They to are fighting for their hard fought league status and our form against the weaker sides has been pretty dire. Another massive game and I hope the locals get down there and make some noise. Hope the groundsmen can cover up the dodgy area as there is an awful lot of rain forecast for the end of this week. Just don't want this game turning into a lottery.

wimbledon must of thought we are nearly there, then everyone around them wins,so they are back in the mix.Time for the torquay public to turn up for this one,but pretty sure they wont.2047 of us there last night,a shocking gate we think, til i saw some of the other attendances from last night, surprisingly accy had a bigger gate than us for a change.york is now massive as petef has said, heads kept out of the clouds for now, they wont be easy, even though their form of late is poor, and our record against fellow strugglers has been dire

I had been very disappointed with the look of our pitch this season. HOWEVER (dont get all defensive Aussie!!), having watched the FLS on saturday I was suprised by just how many pitches looked to be worse than ours. Thats including some Championship sides (and I dont just mean Blackpool either, probably the worst in the league). It surely has to be down to the downpours we had during the summer meaning the roots dont get chance to reach down as far as usual??

Actually I think 50 points will be enough this year, or at least it'll be enough to stay off the bottom - not sure I see both York and Aldershot getting there
Ironically after last night's win we're still on 52 points from the last 46, as it replaced the win over Port Vale. Following that result we had to more wins so a defeat in either of the next 2 matches will see us dip below the 50 point mark for the first time

I think York are looking down the abyss when you look at their fixtures, 3 of which are against teams around them. Aldershot possibly have it easier than most with Vale their dodgiest looking fixture. Im still astounded that Accy, Barnet and the Gargs all matched us with wins last night.

of course til game 46 is completed nobody can be sure how many points will be needed, but for proper safety we need 52 i reckon,an absolutely interesting look to the bottom of the table for the nuetral, but terrifying for those fans of clubs involved though
