History
York City was formed in 1922, the second incarnation of a team with this name. They reached the Football League 7 years later, replacing Ashington. Founder members of the Fourth Division in 1958, they were first promoted in 1957-58. After a yo-yo existence in the bottom 2 divisions, they reached the second tier in 1974, remaining there for 2 seasons, during which time they shared the division with Manchester United.
After consecutive relegations, they were back in the bottom division but in 1984 they won the Fourth Division, becoming the first team to score over 100 points in a Football League season. The following year, they defeated Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup, one of the club's many cup giant-killings. A further one came in the second round of the League Cup in 1995, when they beat Manchester United over two legs, including a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. This came during a further 6 season stint in the third tier, which came to an end in 1999.
Relegation from the Football League came in 2004 after they failed to win any of their final 20 league fixtures. The club's 8 year stay in the Conference saw them as a consistent top-half team but had seemingly become stuck in the division until Gary Mills led them to a surprise play-off final win over Paul Buckle's Luton Town last year. This had followed a victory over Newport County in the FA Trophy Final, the club's first knockout trophy win. The club sacked Mills a few weeks ago, to be replaced by former Norwich and Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington, as they plunged down the table, risking becoming the first team to be relegated straight back into the Conference.

Head-to-head
You couldn't get any more even than the head-to-head record between Torquay and York. The club share 14 league and 1 FA Trophy match win each, with 19 draws. The FA Trophy wins came in the semi-final in 2008, where Torquay won the first leg at home 2-0 and York won 1-0 at Bootham Crescent, handing Torquay a trip to Wembley.
The teams last met in November. Torquay won 2-0 with goals from Danny Stevens and Joe Oastler. This had been Torquay's first Football League win over York since January 2003, when Martin Gritton scored twice along with Tony Bedeau in a 3-1 win at Plainmoor. Between these was a win for the Gulls at Bootham Crescent in 2007, with the only goal from Chris Todd.
The last match between these teams at Plainmoor was in August 2008. Stevens was again a scorer for Torquay, but a late equaliser from Onome Sodje salvaged a point for the Minstermen.
