Result: 4-3 (Lawrence 2,Murphy 2). Attendance: 3924. Great to see Timbo's scanner on form. What a run of games we had against York at Plainmoor - two 3-0s followed by this cracker. I don't remember the goals but I do remember that John Turner very nearly scored - a long punt upfield sailing over the keeper and the ball going just wide of the post at the Babbacombe end right in front of where I was standing - in the days I would stand behind whichever goal we were attacking. What brilliant entertainment Mike Green's team provided in the first half of that season - faithfully chronicled in Budleigh's scrapbook until it all ended up with "BUGGAR" written all over it in red felt tip pen. You youngsters will get used to it.

Never forget Steve Cooper scoring the winner past Kenny Allen that day if my memory is correct. Unfortunately we then inexplicably went on a shocking run of 15 games without a win and finished 9th in a season that had promised so much.

Coops scored up the far end in the first half. The second half winner was right in front of us at the away end. Left back Phil Ferns sliced a clearance which looped up and over their 6'4" keeper and under the bar. We laughed and laughed at such a tall keeper getting "lobbed" by his own player and laughed even more when the Catweazle lookalike went absolutely mental at the goalscorer. Little did I know how many times I would see that keeper go mental at defenders - and what a TUFC legend he would become. I remember the radio playing the Buzzcocks on the way home and it seemed like everyone on the coach joined in singing along. If Carlsberg did away trips .....

Unfortunately we then inexplicably went on a shocking run of 15 games without a win and finished 9th in a season that had promised so much. Part of it was the weather. We had quite a few games postponed and lost momentum - where have I heard that before? Another factor was Tommy Sermanni - who had been absolutely fantastic - picking up a knee injury. He was never the same again and we lost a lot of our drive. In truth most of us knew our squad was thinner than our rivals. We were a centre-back short of being a promotion team - remember how great we were when Jim Hagan was on loan? Injuries would always find us out. Thanks to the internet not having been invented, we didn't have to spend the first half of the season with people constantly moaning "It won't last! We haven't "invested" in the team". And we didn't have to spend the second half of the season with the moaners saying "See - I told you so. There is no point whatsoever in having a club like Torquay United. They just couldn't be bothered so why should we?".

The first day of the 80s with my best mates celebrating on the open terracing. Happy days indeed.

I have to say this was the best game I've ever seen at Plainmoor. End to end stuff, the atmosphere was electric. The great Peter Lorimer playing for York. Mind you he had lost some of his accuracy from his Leeds days but none of the power and the mini stand was not the safest place to be when York were attacking that end. In fact standing next to me was kid about 9 or 10 years old from York with his father. The kid unfortunately took one of Lorimer's misses full in the face and his dad had to literally carry him out due to concussion.
