Peterborough fans excited to be top of the League would have been much less happy later on because this was the season in which they were relegated to Division IV as punishment for illegal payments. Sadly, this harsh punishment allowed Mansfield Town, who had bribed their way into the Third Division in 1963, (instead of Gillingham, as it happens) to survive in spite of finishing 21st in the table.
