Steve Cooper wholly adopted by Keith Cooper? Would that be the same Keith Cooper who later became FIFA's director of communications? I'm sure he had Torquay connections. Eventually given the chop by Sepp Blatter.

Eventually given the chop by Sepp Blatter. Only just seen this - yes, 'twas I, at that time (1981) covering TQU for now defunct DevonAir and still following the Gulls' fortunes from Switzerland. Later called to higher office at Blatter's court and dismissed by the little dictator eight years later, a badge of honour rather than a disgrace. Also, incidentally, in regular contact with Tommy Sermanni (now better known as Tom) as head coach of the US women's team after having coached the Aussie girls for several years and also coached in Japan and Malaysia.

Being a just a little TUFC-obsessed, I am more impressed by someone sponsoring the great Steve Cooper (before he got knee-capped in John Menzies) than by someone being FIFA director of communications. But to more normal people, a Torquay man rising to the very top of world football is quite an achievement. There is a link to a Guardian story below. It seems Mr Blatter had a purge of everyone who tried to remain neutral in his politicking. How has the man got away with it for so long? If someone doesn't stop him, he'll do something really stupid like awarding the World Cup to Qatar. Oh, hang on a minute .... www.theguardian.com/football/2002/jul/10/newsstory.sport1

Good to see the post from Keith. I guess we now have to reluctantly accept that there's little hope of Steve Cooper being inducted into the FIFA Hall of Fame.
