An early example of football hooliganism in Torquay took place on 29 January 1921. You could very probably have guessed that the offenders came from Plymouth but you may be surprised to learn that they were not Argyle fans but Green Waves fans, not visiting Torquay United or Torquay Town but Babbacombe. Babbacombe won the game 3-2, but some of the Plymouthians who came up on the charabanc decided not to waste good drinking time by going to Plainmoor for the game. I wonder if they understood the symbolic importance of starting their pub crawl at the Torre Abbey Hotel - the very place where, 22 years earlier, the landlord's son and his mates had founded Torquay United Football Club. There is another echo of our club's history in that Mr Harris, who came to the polices's aid, lived across the road from an 8 year old boy called Ralph Birkett. Ralph was a decent footballer who went on to play for Arsenal, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and England. In fact, he was so good that he even played for Torquay United. Another thing to note is the comment about inexperienced constables in the early 20s. Of course, a generation of coppers would have been wiped out in the trenches.

I've enjoyed reading that! Like the the reference to the tram and I see that the spelling of SHirburn road has changed over the years. Do you know if the Torre abbey hotel is still standing?

Do you know if the Torre abbey hotel is still standing? Yes still there - calling it a "hotel" is a bit grandiose. It's also lost an R and an E - another reminder that spellings vary over years.

It's also lost an R and an E - another reminder that spellings vary over years. Mr Luscombe's hostelry seems to have been known as both the Torre Abbey Hotel and the Tor Abbey Inn as far back as March 1899 - just a few weeks before that historic meeting.

In the second report the Chairman is called Mr Bullied. No wonder he had no truck with those Janner hooligans.

I understand that Jon himself witnessed a drunken Argyle supporter misbehaving in a Newton Abbot public house several hours after the Bristol Rovers game in April. The miscreant may have been indigenous to the town of Newton Abbot but his actions were certainly in keeping with those of his forefathers and he was taking every opportunity to adhere to the "Spirit of '21".

It's pleasing to see that Jon isn't being too sanctimonious in condemning that behaviour back in 1921. Not after he led the rendition of "We are staying up!" at the Eastern Eye.

Pictured this week in the ever so Wild Warberries. I don’t think this piece of graffiti has been around since 1921 but, given it’s in a part of town that time has – um - overlooked, it could well be. Or is it the signature of a brand new group of Ultras inspired by the Torquay United programme and the apparent branding of Plainmoor as TQ1? Either way don’t tell Alpine Joe or he’ll be wanting the lapel badge for his collection of “hoolie” memorabilia. I bet that’s one genre where Budleigh can’t compete.
